5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Video Work and not a Bad Still Camera

Pros: Price, swivel LCD and the sensor, image quality and relative ease of use. For 750 even the included kit lense is not bad. I have a D2X and D200 and a lot of good Nikkor glass. I am 6-7 years behind the curve in DLSR bodies, so I am very excited what the Nikon sensors (not Sony sensors in the D2s and 200s) can do. I also have large format printer and print quite often. Not shooting for money anymore, so I saved 750 over the D7000. I usually go for the motto get it right the first time but that would mean getting the D3 and I do not have $6000 lying around or even 3K for the D300. The image capturing is good enough and I have 24" prints to prove it. Video is better than any handycam I've used.

Cons: Not good for older lenses, that's my only beef. And the manual operation is not that great. But my D2 and d200 still works. But really, I bought this camera so I can shoot video. My wife is happy too. Also the color is not as neutral as the other high end models. I have my own glass and they look ridiculous in this camera. A 55-200 was part of the deal and to be honest that works better for video work any way than the big 2.8 lenses. I am sure one can argue about the autofoucs and the exposure database but it is 750 dollars. I have not dropped it hard yet but the plastic body may be suspect. Battery also does not last as long.

Overall Review: I miss the control I have with the D2 and D200 but my wife does not. also because it is small it does not look like you are a press photographer. If it gets stolen 750 is an easier pill to swallow. The swivel LCD is really a good thing for video work and Nikon did this right. For parents who need to take photos/videos of their kids in badly lit gyms, this with a couple of VR lenses really makes it very useful and fulfilling.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent quality images

Pros: I added a grip with second battery, making the camera easier for me to told and use. I have the kit lens, the 55-300 VR lens and the Rokinon 85mm 1.4. I have been very impressed with the image quality especially in low light. I can only assume the reviewer before me had a defective camera or had expectations that were much higher than mine. I moved from a M43 camera to this one and I am more than happy.

Cons: I wish that it was easier to use manual exposure. When focusing with a manual focus lens, the LED indicating proper focus is poorly designed ... there should be a three LED system as used in the Nikon FM exposure meter.

Overall Review: I shot a bunch of pictures at a wedding last weekend using the 55-300 lens mainly. Wow .... outdoor pictures were absolutely fantastic. indoors at the reception even at 6400 iso the pictures were very nice. I am very impressed.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid body, good quality pics, proprietary battery

Pros: Solid construction
Lots of control over shots
Great low-light performance
Excellent LCD display

Cons: Proprietary battery with no 3rd party alternatives
Chews batteries
Zoom ring is a bit rough

Overall Review: I've been snapping a lot of pics over the past few days, and I'm impressed with the amount of control the d5100 allows. If you want a fully automatic mode, fully manual, or anywhere in between, the camera has a setting. Some of the settings take a little digging to find, but in general the options are well laid out.

I've purchased a lot of aftermarket batteries for Canon before, so I thought I'd do the same with the Nikon. No luck. The Chinese haven't figured out how to crack the code in the chip yet, which of course Nikon puts in the camera for our benefit. You can get a two-battery grip and put the genuine Nikon in the right socket and an aftermarket in the left, but I'd prefer to have 3 or 4 cheap batteries in the bag.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat camera, wonderful starter kit

Pros: Lens is perfect for "all around" use and nearly full sky astro-photography. Massive amount of features, but very easy to navigate menus and use them all. Vibration reduction works flawlessly and doesn't degrade the image like digital VR on cheaper cameras. Huge range of compatible lenses available.

Cons: Doesn't come with the simple IR remote for required for bulb mode and some other features.

Overall Review: The remotes are cheap and readily available, but; When you're charging this much for a camera, why lock your customer out from a bunch of features over such a cheap remote? It's such a good camera that it's not enough to deduct any stars :-)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for the buck

Pros: Light weight and durable

Cons: Lousy strap. Typical.

Overall Review: If you couple this camera with good glass you will most likely be very happy with your purchase. The kit lens is okay to start with but save your pennies. I picked up a 70-300 and a 35mm 1.4 to accompany my 5100 and am happy as a clam.

5 out of 5 eggsNikon D5100

Pros: This is a Great new Camera from Nikon. If you are looking to upgrade from a point and shoot or any older Nikons, this is the camera to get. It is also worth the $200 more from the D3100. Every easy to use. Alot of older Nikon camera users complained about the new location of the buttons. Well this camera is layed out nicely. I am an oldtimer Miranda 35mm SLR user plus I own a Nikon P80. This new D5100 we be with me evrywhere I go.

Cons: Non yet. Everything is perfect.

Overall Review: Buy it from Newegg. It doesn't pay to shop around. Newegg is cheaper of very close to everyone else. Even if it is a few dollars more, I rather buy were the customer service is there for me.. Thats at NEWEGG.. No I don't work for them or any family memember does. I am just a very satisfied Newegg Customer...

5 out of 5 eggsD5100

Pros: Great camera, takes amazing video and pictures. I bought a 55-300 vr lens to go with it. Well worth the money! Anyone interested in buying a Dslr look no further.

Cons: none that I can find yet. Some people complain about the video not having a manual mode, however you can zoom just fine, just can't adjust video settings other than audio and quality. It works fine for what I use it for

Overall Review: I would recommend this for anyone wanting there first decent Dslr camera. I upgraded from a point and shoot camera so it's amazing for me. Also might want to look at a 55-300 lens for pictures of objects further out, and a tripod. I got a Vista Explorer 60" tripod and it works well with these.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing for the Price

Pros: Amazing camera, I purchased this camera to start learning how to take great pictures and get into the camera scene. I am learning daily at the amazing things this camera can do and have no regrets.

Cons: Not that this is on the camera, but the seller marked up the price to 799.99$ then had it on sale for 459.99$. After the sale ended the price went to 499.99$ with no type of sale. Great marketing to bring in poor people looking to get a great deal.

5 out of 5 eggsUnbelievable

Pros: I was going to buy the D3100 and was ready to put down the credit card for it when I saw the D5100 had just come out. I looked at the additional features and decided to spend a few more dollars and get the D5100. This camera has repeatedly blown me away at how fast it is, what a great display it has. with how many features it has that I didn't know about until l played around with it. I have been taking pictures with Nikon camera's for almost 30 years and this one is so far advanced and intelligently designed. It has made me a far superior photographer just by using it. The size and weight are good the HD video with sound is full 1920 X1200 HD. It can do HDR right out of the box. The colors are amazing with the standard settings and if you play around with it you can make pictures come alive. I am so completely impressed with this camera I cant even tell you. I am taking a trip to the Grand Canyon in a few weeks and I cant wait to see what I get. AAA++I

Cons: I can't think of any cons other than Nikon is late on providing additional accessories like the larger battery packs and the Nikon Hot shoe microphone for video is close to 200 bucks. Its the first one they have come out with so it will be some time before we can expect to see the price drop at the photography stores. But saying that Im sure the microphone is well above anything else out there and worth every penny. Nikon does provide fantastic value for the dollar. You just have to be willing to spend more to get that value. The pay off has always been great. Nikon has really outdone themselves with this model. I am Very Impressed.

Overall Review: I am so glad I waited to get the D3100 and saw that this one was out and available. I had to pay full pop 899.00 but in all honesty its worth far more than 900 dollars. Its like shooting with a 3 or 4 thousand dollar camera. the quality is top notch Nikon. I have never owned anything better built than a Nikon camera. The Colors and auto focus are amazing, the display is 5 times better then the D3100 or the D40 I was shooting with. The feature set is so powerful, you can make this camera ado just about anything. and shooting in auto makes you look like you are a genius. I am completely happy with my new D5100 words cant even explain. If you are looking for a stellar piece of equipment to take you to the next level and beyond I wouldn't pass up the new Nikon. It's Fantastic....

5 out of 5 eggsA Great Product Through A Great Seller

Pros: The first thing you have to realize when deciding between the D3100, the D5100 and the D7000 is that with the D5100 you get the the ergonomics and ease of use of the D3100, with the sensor from the D7000. But it's not just a middle ground choice, as it brings its own extras like the articulated LCD screen and various effects. I spent a long time deciding between brands and models for my DSLR, and I have to say that I have no regrets in my decision. I received my camera on time (over 4th of July weekend no less!) and in perfect condition. For the image quality and speed of this camera, you get everything you pay for and more. I could go on and on about every feature in detail, but this review would be pages long. Bottom line, ITS A GREAT CAMERA. BUY IT!

Cons: A few months with this camera and you will eventually scream at the kit lens. It is by no means bad, but with enough experience you will want to move beyond what it can do, upgrading to your various other options. It's hardly a "con" but it is the sad truth of owning a DSLR for the first time. The only real negative I have experienced is that at times the articulating LCD screen can get in the way when attaching a hand-grip to the camera. It still fits safely, but the screen will have some slight problems opening/closing. This is an improvement on previous models that often got in the way of tripod mounting. You barely notice it after a while. I imagine for more experienced shooters, the battery life will seem to low, but that's why they sell extra batteries and camera grips with extended batteries. The HDR-effects this model offers will not hold up to those of you with more photography and image editing experience. For those of you that love cute features, you'll go crazy for it.

Overall Review: I would like to take the time here to thank NewEgg for proving once again that they provide the best customer. When it came time for my camera purchase, I went to an alternate vendor, as they offered the lowest price at the time. I was so excited to get my new camera, that I didn't research as much as usual. While searching for any last minute promo codes, I found horrible reviews and talk of repeated delays with getting the package ready for shipping. I cancelled my order and immediately called NewEgg. I explained my long customer history with the company and how helpful they were in other situations. I told them I would much rather give NewEgg my business, as I have trusted them with all my electronics purchases. The representative was kind enough to ask if it was possible to match the competitor's price for me and it was approved! They took the time to walk me through the process and took care of everything in a quick manner. NewEgg appreciates our business!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Camera

Pros: Very light

The rotating screen is great for shots at odd angles, this fits the abstract photography style perfectly

Same image sensor as the d7000

Great image quality

Cons: No lcd on the top, so if you dont want to look through the lens to read your settings you have to turn the viewfinder around. This wastes battery.

Fewer buttons on the outside than the d90 and the d7000, you have to navigate through the menu to get so some features that have dedicated buttons on other cameras.

Adjusting the aperture and the shutter speed is done on the same wheele

No built in focus motor.

Pretty much every electronic feature accept for the image sensor is inferior to the d7000 but i guess thats why its so much less.

Stock lens isnt all that great.

Overall Review: Overall I am really happy with this camera

This is a camera specifically targeted at someone who already knows that photography is a hobby they will stick with, nikon's entry level dslr is the d3000.

The built in HDR function isn't really that great, it is saved as a JPG file so you cant tone mapping, if your new to HDR thats what gives HDR images that "real" look. It does have bracketing so if you want to soot some HDRs use that instead.

Raw files form this camera dont work in CS4 but RAW files from the d3000 and d7000 do. Just download the adobe DNG converter and you can open your RAW files in photoshop (after manually converting).

If your an amateur photographer or you need a light but capable camera this is a great choice!

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing upgrade from D3000

Pros: - Swivel Screen
- Takes Video
- easy to clean
- Adaptable Lense.
- Live View Finder
- Easy to use

Cons: - slow shutter, My D3000 had a faster shutter..
- Video isnt THAT great, lag's a bit when alot is going on.
- Shoots in NEF not DNG native (need a converter)

Overall Review: I noticed my Girlfriends (SAME EXACT CAMERA) has a slower View Screen, and it render's the pictures ALOT slower.

3 out of 5 eggsNikon's old tricks...

Pros: Latest consumer grade chip. Same as the D7000. Some nifty new tricks incorporated but nothing special.

Cons: Where to start. Nikon's model numbering does nothing anymore but confuse the consumer. THE BODY SIZE IS UNACCEPTABLE in a consumer grade DSLR. The ergonomics are waaay off and made for a child hand. The plastic kit lens will drive you nuts, but the body itself is not made to handle decent grade zoom or prime lenses. Numerous reports of lens mounts breaking. No lens motor for AF- must be in newer DX lenses only that include their own motor. Most functions are only viewable/usable through the back LED panel, not thru the viewfinder. Quality vs older D series like the D70, D80, etc not that much better, in a smaller, toy like package...

Overall Review: Why only 3 stars? The D5100 had been reviewed to death. None if any address real user issues as usual, only features. MSRP is way overpriced and model numbering by Nikon are a means of marketing, not value. D5100 is extreme picky on lenses of worth, valued at 3 to 7 times the MSRP, and mount breakage is common. Warranty work by Nikon rates about 2 of 10 stars these days. and overall quality is waaaay down (plastic city). To get what most consumers want in a consumer grade DSLR with this chip is a model number and more ergonomic full sized body costing 3 times that of the D5100. It's almost like this model is a overpriced toy that could easily be had in a point-and-shoot market.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Wonderful camera. For anyone looking to get into a DSLR who knows a little bit about photography or who is just learning, this is the perfect camera for you. A step up from the D3200 with more features and amazing images, its just a great camera to learn on.

Cons: It doesn't make me dinner.

Overall Review: I took this camera with me on vacation and shot everything in site. I used full manual and shot in raw and the pictures came out amazing. You cannot go wrong with this camera.

5 out of 5 eggsPlease get this Nikon D5100, you wont be regret.

Pros: Good quality image, easy to use, light, good for travel and for someone who just switch from a digital camera to a first dslr.

Cons: The view finder is little small but it is worth the price.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible service, Good Camera

Pros: The camera is good, takes amazing pictures with good battery life, easy to understand functions. I love the camera when it actually works.

Cons: Camera had a "error, press shutter release button again" which prevented taking any pictures, a simple bump on the side would fix the problem temporarily for the first week or so. After a week, the error would not go away and I had to send it in to Nikon for repair/replacement. That was 3 weeks ago, the camera has now been sitting in Nikon's shop for 17 business days without any attention. Upon calling Nikon, I was told that my camera would be returned someday LAST week.

Overall Review: In conclusion, the camera is very nice when its working and I'm sure most will NOT have any problems at all. If you get unlucky and get a malfunctioning camera, you will have spent almost $1000 on a camera that you wont be able to use for 2-3 months. Currently i have missed photographing a vacation, a few trips to the lake, my son going to college, and my entire summer.

2 out of 5 eggsD40x Takes Much Better Pics

Pros: Swivel Screen, HD Video, Mic Port, AutoFocus when shooting Video.

Cons: Build Quality, Very High Noise (even with lowest iso levels), Bad in low light, Not what you think it will be when shooting video.

Overall Review: I bumped up from D40x and man I wish I never did. D40x is built much better and takes MUCH better pictures. The noise on the D5100 is HORRIBLE...even on the lowest iso levels. Takes horrible pictures with built-in flash. When I use the word Horrible...it is compared to what you pay...The Auto settings with flash for low light is all washed out and misses on clarity, vividness, and sharpness that my D40x had. I'm sending it back to try the D90. Hopefully being this long newegg will honor this trade.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Camera, old tech

Pros: Cheap

Cons: old tech

Overall Review: They are trying to sell these now since the 3200 is coming out in a matter of weeks, once it does, you can get the 3200 at almost the same price as this. I would wait and get the 3200 and get a camera that's 2x better, or, wait until the 3200 is out, and the price on the 5100 plummets.
