3 out of 5 eggsEhhh...it's OK...if you can get past setting it up

Pros: - Night vision was much better than I expected...although I only tested it in a typical size bedroom (home office) and the garage, but it was more than sufficient for that environment. Even in total darkness, everything was clearly visible.
- P, T, and not really, but almost Z...pan and tilt functions worked, albeit somewhat clunky with the various mobile apps - zoom was just a 1x, 2x, etc. image size and not really true zoom of the lens (this also appeared to only be available from the web management GUI access to the camera and not in the mobile apps)
- Slim-line AC adapter (saves room on the power strip)
- Ability to invert/mirror image if mounting upside down (from ceiling) (this feature is only available from the direct web management GUI)

Cons: - Cheap construction, everything seems loose
- P/T function is not 360*
- 802.11n capability is only in 2.4GHz spectrum, come on D-Link...it's 2013, give us a 5GHz 802.11n client radio
- Camera and mount are rather large
- Serious PITA to set up emailing of "events", still image or video clip
- Image quality is only 640x480
- The auto day/night feature is problematic at best, it seemed to randomly jump back and forth between the two modes...ended up just setting it to night mode so it would always be able to "see"
- Lighting changes within a selected motion detection area is enough to cause a triggered event
- Documentation wasn't very intuitive for walking through the initial setup, unless you have a D-Link Cloud Router (I do not)

Overall Review: After initial configuration, I updated the firmware. It never came back up during the upgrade process, I eventually got tired of waiting and unplugged it and it came back up with the new firmware (luckily it didn't brick it). I should've known at that point that this was going to be an adventure.

I'm not sure I'd recommend this camera to someone who wasn't pretty technically savvy. Original intention was to put in the garage to keep an eye on my car while travelling and have it email me stills/clips when any motion is detected within the defined area. Good idea in theory, but more difficult to set up to do that then it should be. I was finally able to get an email account configured to work with the event notification feature (took a bit of research and trial/error to find the right ports) but got notification to a gmail account working. Hotmail/MSN, work email, etc. just wouldn't work for the relays (even though I had the required info). Honestly, this is probably my biggest complaint (along with the clunky P/T feature)...as a cloud device, I should be able to just enter an email account and password for where I want to send the images/clips on notification into the cloud account and have it proxy everything for me. With the issues encountered getting the email notifications set up, I didn't even attempt the FTP capability.

5 out of 5 eggsFull Featured PTZ webcam

Pros: PTZ (zoom is digital). Can also monitor audio (or the sound can be muted). There is a surprisingly good view from the VGA camera, you won’t be reading the print in the magazine on the coffee table across the room, but you can certainly make things (and people) out. Night vision illuminates my small dining and front room with the camera’s IR LEDs (a distance of ~ 25 ft/7.5 m). Webcam is accessible easily through mydlink.com website (if you choose to use mydlink.com). Full controls are available with both mydlink.com and camera’s local software. FTP uploading is available via the local software/advanced settings. It comes with hardware and a bracket for mounting the camera on the wall, if you so choose. Local/Advanced settings view offers both a H.264 and MJPEG stream. This camera comes with short flat white ethernet cable. Power brick is small enough and its cord is, compared to my other webcams, very long.

Cons: Tablet version’ of mydlink app is paid (but the mydlink lite app is free and works just as well on tablets). Zero Configuration Setup requires D-Link cloud router. You’ll have to open a port on your router for the camera if you want to access the camera from outside your local network if not using mydlink.com. Mydlink.com requires you to accept a rather lengthy TOS. Stream require java be installed on your computer, but not your phone.

Overall Review: Wired configuration is easy and necessary for the initial setup. Wireless is straightforward during initial arrangement. Good Wi-Fi reception from the device’s external antenna. Viewing angle from the camera seems to be greater than other webcams I have owned. There are a plethora of controls in the local camera settings. Camera’s local controls are still available while using mydlink.com (go to settings >advanced settings). Setup files for both windows and mac must be downloaded via D-Link’s support site. Mounting the camera is a pain; I found it much easier to just put it on my china cabinet. Connection seemed to be lost occasionally, indicated by the status light being red, but this never happened while I was trying to view the camera; the connection issue was always automatically and quickly resolved. Cat eyes look really creepy in night mode.

4 out of 5 eggsMeet Darth Vader

Pros: 1. Does NOT include a software CD.
I view this as a positive. I review (and use) many computer products. My PC would get overloaded by various vendor's software.

2. Easy setup via the devices web page. My set-up steps were as follows:
[a] Log into the device with default ID: admin and no password.
[b] Set your password on the MAINTENANCE -> Admin web page.
[c] Go to the SETUP web page. You can choose Wizard or Manual. I choose Manual, and stepped through the following sub-pages.
-Wizard
-Network Setup
-Wireless Setup
-Dynamic DNS
-Image Setup
-Video
-Audio
-Motion Detection
-Mail
-FTP
-Time and Date
-Day/Night Mode
-Camera Control
-Logout
[d] On the Network Setup sub-page, I turned off UPnP, and set a unique HTTP port (the HTTP default Port 80 was in use by another device on my system).
- I then set my Router to forward the unique HTTP port to the device. This allows me to view this (and many other) cloud cameras via the Internet (see Other Thoughts).
[e] On Wireless Setup, click the Site Survey button. Select your Router's SSID, and enter your Wireless password. I don't use WEP.
- The device does NOT show your Wireless password "in the clear" which is good for security (unlike some other cloud cameras).
[f] I didn't change anything on the: Dynamic DNS, Image Setup, Video or Audio sub-pages.
[g] Next, I set up the Motion Detection. It was relatively easy to fine-tune to not detect "False Positives".
- CrabbyCarol, find the area of the screen with the unwanted motion, and deselect that portion of the screen in the grid.
[h] On Mail, you set up the standard stuff (SMTP Server, send/receive eMail address, etc.).
- I selected the "E-mail attached with 6 frames". I prefer six frames (over just one) another feature not available on some other cloud cameras.
[i] On FTP, you set up the standard stuff (Host Name, Port, UserID, etc.).
- My Router supports FTP Server for a Flash Thumb Drive, so I used it to FTP. You can also FTP to an Internet server.
[j] On Time and Date, I entered my Time Zone, and favorite Internet Time Server's IP address.
[k] I left Day/Night Mode alone for the time being.
[l] On Camera Control, you can point the camera various stops and Save the Locations for later use.

From here on, you'll spend most of your time on the LIVE VIDEO web page. It uses Java to show a video of what the camera is pointing at.

3. Audio quality is good (not great due to intermittent popping noise) and defaults On. However MUCH better audio then some other cloud cameras I've used.

4. Motion Detection was easy to "fine tune". I have had issues fine tuning the motion detection on other cameras.

5. You can configure Motion Detection on a Schedule (i.e. only active a certain hours). A feature unavailable on some other cloud cameras.

6. Single STATUS web page that shows everything (e.g. Camera Name, Time & Date, Firmware Version, MAC Address, ..., DDNS, FTP Server Test, E-mail Test, and WIREL

Cons: 1. I was unable to get H.264 nor MJPEG Videos to FTP nor eMail.
- I reluctantly deducted one Egg for this. However, this is a feature some other cloud cameras don't even offer.
- Viewing LIVE VIDEO in a web browser was not an issue. The H.264 compression is about 4X more efficient than MJPEG.

2. The Dynamic DNS sub-page only supports: dlinkddns.com and DynDNS (no longer free). I normally use noip (which is still free).
- D-Link provides a free DDNS service to its customers, which is a nice touch.

3. Pan and Tilt speed is slower than some other cloud cameras.
- Can be viewed as a Pro or a Con, but the device's lense is "wide angle" (i.e. the corners look a little "bug eyed").

4. I have a "Basic Feature" Cell Phone which does not support Java. Thus I can not view the camera LIVE VIDEO on my Cell Phone.
- I'm hoping D-Link can make a firmware update to add a web page to show just a static .JPG of what the camera is aimed at.

Overall Review: Its Hard to believe I'm reviewing the same product as the Majestic One -lol.

Also see my 5/12/2013 review of the TRENDnet TV-IP851WIC, newegg item N82E16881102083.

A few words about DDNS.
Most residential Internet customers don't have a Fixed (a.k.a. Static) IP Address. Their IP address can change from time to time at the whim of their ISP (a.k.a. Dynamic).
DDNS is an Internet service where your Router, Camera, etc. can "check in" periodically with the DDNS Server and provide your current IP Address.
You set up a symbolic Host Name, and the DDNS Server Redirects your Internet Browser to your Home IP Address.
This essentially gives you the benefit of a Static IP Address, without having to pay your ISP a fee every month.

I have muliple devices which can be accessed over the Internet (via my single Dynamic IP Address).
To do this, I assign each device a unique HTTP Port Number via the "Port Forwarding" menu on my Router. I also turn off UPnP.
Then I update each device with its unique HTTP Port Number (e.g. under Network Setup -> PORT SETTINGS on this device).
To access an individual device you must append its Port Number to the IP Address (e.g. 1.2.3.4:88, where 1.2.3.4 is the IP and :88 is the Port)

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Entry Level Camera

Pros: Not expensive (on sale), works OK as an Internet camera. Picture is decent even in low light and audio is OK. Basic setup is easy and included a free MyDlink.com account that is necessary to utilize the camera via the Internet.

In spite of the negatives I've detailed in the "Other Thoughts" I gave the camera 4 eggs because this is an entry level product. If you want a professional grade system expect to pay many hundreds of dollars.

Cons: Software is buggy, so the camera was very limited for security since recording function never worked automatically on my home network.

It never generated email or snapshot with motion. You have to be online & manually take a picture to record anything.

Poorly designed AC power plug.

Java installation required.

I worked hard to make the motion detection work, but found it to be worthless. It takes several seconds to kick in, and it quits in a few seconds. Some compromise to save drive space would be understandable, but I was never able to get either feature to really work (motion detection or saving video to a hard drive) and gave up after 2 resets and 3 of hours of work.

Although Setup said I had correctly configured my email function, and it initially tested OK, it didn’t work as advertised. When the motion sensor is activated, it’s supposed to email you a snapshot of what the camera sees, but that was another feature that failed to work.

Overall Review: I have set up dozens of wireless networks, abut this was my first exposure to an Internet camera. My first impression out of the box was “Wow, this is a big computer camera”. Even before adding the 2 ½” tall stand the camera stands over 5” tall and 4” wide. Anyone seeing it would definitely know they were “on camera”, but that might be part of the desired effect in many applications. Unfortunately most of the camera’s size can be attributed to its panning function, and not its picture quality. The camera quality seemed solid.

The camera is designed to be a part of a home network and includes a WPS button to automatically connect with a wireless router with that feature. It took me less than a half hour to configure the camera with my wireless router, connecting it to my router through the supplied Ethernet cord.

The two prong AC plug (wall wart) is unfortunately oriented so it sits parallel to many power strips, and takes up at least 2 power plug spaces, even if you plug it into the end receptacle. AC power is required as expected for a camera with this much functionality operating 24/7.

The downloaded setup program immediately recognized the camera as a device on my network and I created an admin account password. Strangely the setup software was never able to detect my wireless network although WPS worked fine. I accessed setup features of the camera using an interface similar to a wireless router, addressing it at the static IP address 192.168.0.20.

A “mydlink” account is required if you want to see what the camera is seeing from any location in the world connected to the Internet. The software walked me through setting up the account and adding my camera.

I signed into my newly created and was informed I would have to install Java, which has proven to introduce vectors of malware into computers; I was even less excited when I had to uncheck the boxes that would have installed a couple of unwanted programs and settings on my computer. I will probably have to uncheck these default options with every Java update, which will be frequent if Java’s history of security vulnerabilities is any gauge.

Java was thoughtful enough to install a “Suggested Sites” icon on my Favorites bar, without my permission.

I guess you are supposed to buy the DNR-322L 2-bay mydlink NVR if you want to make lengthy recordings, but I did not, so I could only take manual snapshots. I never got the video clips feature to work, but I did not bother with configuring or renting an FTP server.

The picture quality is good but not great, even in very low light. In low light it switches the picture from color to B&W. It’s cool that you can pan left to right, up to down by accessing your mydlink account from anywhere you can access the Internet. The zoom feature was worthless because the picture quickly degraded; it was a digital zoom rather than an optical zoom. The picture was better on my iPad2 (free app) than on my Win8 13.3” Sony Vaio

5 out of 5 eggsVery good night vision, motion detection security cam.

Pros: Included in the packaging is a mounting bracket or you have the option of mounting the camera directly to the wall, using the included alignment template for a professional looking installation.
As I don’t have a D-Link Cloud Router, I bypassed the Zero Configuration setup but tried using WPS just to see if it was as easy as it sounded. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the camera installed using WPS, whether it was the fault of the camera or my Trendnet router, I’m not sure as this is the only product I’ve tried using WPS with. Not a problem though, I plugged the Ethernet cable into the router and ran the Setup Wizard as per the instructions in the included Quick Install Guide. I signed up and registered the camera with a mydlink account. Now I have the option of accessing the camera via my home network and/or the mydlink website.
I was impressed with the number of options available for a relatively inexpensive security camera.
You can choose from two video encodings, H.264 or MJPEG, both with 3 resolution options, H.264 at various bitrates, (64 kbps up to 3 Mbps) and MJPEG quality from very low to very high, along with various framerate options. All depending on the quality you demand and the space you have available for saving video and/or images if you choose to do so.
You can setup a schedule and areas for motion detection and even have those video clips and/or images sent to an e-mail account, limiting size and time if so desired. There is also an option to send those files to an FTP server.
Night vision can be set to auto, manual, always day, always night, or whatever schedule you choose. The night vision was very good, I had no trouble discerning objects and people when within the 25 ft range, if not even a bit farther.
Audio can be disabled altogether or set in increments of 10 from 0 to 100.
You can also configure preset positions (up to 25) that you can immediately point the camera to from a simple menu while viewing the live video. The downloadable D-Link D-ViewCam software allows you to use these presets you’ve chosen in a ‘patrol’ pattern, although I did not try doing so myself, so I can’t comment on how well that program works.

Cons: Well, it has to be plugged in, but then if it didn’t it would eat through batteries , but still…it needs an outlet. The plastic housing seems a little flimsy, but I think it will actually hold up pretty well.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent starter camera

Pros: Easy setup:
The camera's pretty much just plug and play, There's a template to use in order to mount directly to a surface, or you can use the included bracket to offset the mounting location.

Motion detection:
You can use motion detection to send you alerts or to begin recording video. The alerts can include an image of what triggered the event.

Remote viewing:
You can log on to the dlink cloud service to view your camera from anywhere you have an internet access.

Recording:
You are able to record the camera's stream onto a local network drive.

Day/Night mode:
The camera can see in total darkness. It can auto select day and night mode or you can manually select it.

App:
DLink has an app for Android and iPhone. The android app works well and can be used anywhere that you can connect to the internet.

Cons: Internet:
You must have an internet connection to use the install software or to get the manual. Only a quick start guide is included in the packaging.

Pan/Tilt:
The included software makes panning and tilting a hit or miss affair. The camera only responds occasionally. The camera can easily be heard when moving and sometimes ticks at random intervals.

LEDs:
The IR LEDs are readily visible anytime they are on. That makes the camera easily seen, which is gets it identified in a surveillance situation, there is also an activity LED that is always on or flashing, I haven't been able to find a way to turn it off, which other cameras allow.

Apps:
There is a free app, but there is also a paid app. The free app is constantly searching on a tablet, making a phone the only viable option for a mobile application.

Overall Review: You can access the camera directly by going into your web browser and entering it's IP address, which your router will supply.

I have installed surveillance systems in residential and business environments. This camera is good for this price range.

4 out of 5 eggsmy choice for a cheap surveilance camera

Pros: The setup app is drop dead simple, and definitely one of the biggest perks of the whole series of dlink cameras.
The pan/tilt feature of the camera works well, and you can adjust the increments from small, to medium, and large. Large is probably 1/20th of a turn, and small is probably 1/60th.
The mobile and web apps both work fantastically.
Some basic setup can be done remotely, but when you go the IP of the camera locally, you are given a much larger subset of options (none of which I had to use).
The range of the camera is pretty great, and the mounting hardware it comes with would let me easily mount and use this anywhere in/on my house.

Cons: No dual band wifi.
The firmware was out of date, and there is no built in updater, you’ve got to find and download the correct firmware file, and upload it to the webpage. Works fine, but I’m starting to get used to devices that can download and update their own firmware straight from the webpage.
There is a pretty long delay in controlling the pan/tilt (even on the same network), and it’s loud enough to drown out everything else if you are listening to the sound of a live feed. Covertly adjusting the camera is not going to happen in anything but a loud environment.

Overall Review: To start the camera setup, unpack the device, power it on, connect the camera to your router via ethernet cable, then go to mydlink.com/support to download the wizard that will setup the camera. It walks you through the whole process, including getting a mydlink.com account. I tied the camera to my already existing account, and I could immediatly see the camera next to my other one at mydlink.com

I had previously reviewed the DCS-931L (white, no pan/tilt or night vision). The daytime video quality compares with that model, but the night vision and the pan/tilt make this model the easy choice considering the cost difference. Both are 640x480, but in a dim environment, the night vision of this model makes it much more usable than the other model. The Pan/tilt is handy to have, but I doubt I’d use it a ton. The external wireless antenna is good, and this model has better range than the DCS-931L I already had.

The sound/motion detection of this device work just like any of the dlinks, which is to say, they work well, but require some tuning the first couple of days after you’ve deployed them.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Simplistic, Easy to Use, Good App (Android)

Pros: -Easy installation through WPS linking

-The wireless range is excellent. I was able to use the camera two rooms away from my router. It supports either 10/100 Ethernet connections, as well as 802.11g and 802.11n wireless. I am currently connected via an 802.11g connection.

-Suite of options customizable through the MyDLink website.
You can change whether the camera will be in night mode, day, or left on AUTO to where when lighting dims it will automatically switch to infrared/night mode.
You can rotate the camera up, down, left and right throught mydlink.
There's a built-in microphone that allows streaming live audio. It's not the best quality, but it does pick up a lot of noise, even hard to hear things. I had it actually just sitting on my entertainment center and it picked up footsteps coming from two rooms over.
The online options also allow you set up motion detection alerts: what time to begin and end the monitoring.* The way it works is you select a boxed area in the viewing field where you want the software to monitor movement, and during the times you set it to monitor, it will automatically send you an email alert.

-Nice Android app (available through iOS as well, but I didn't get chance to try it out). The app lets you do almost everything you can on a computer minus setting up the motion detection perimeters but it does allow you to turn the motion detection settings on and off. It also allows you to take a snapshot of the current view and it will save in your phone's memory.

-Included in box was a nice sticker you place on your wall, ceiling, or anywhere you wished to mount the camera with the mounting structure. Also included are the necessary screws and drywall mount, as well as an Ethernet cable if you wish to hard wire the camera. Note: the Ethernet cable is about only 4ft.

-This camera allows for video recording using a dedicated network video recorder, or dedicated computer for camera monitoring which is provided by D-Link on their website (it supports H.264 and MJPEG video codecs).

Cons: -The resolution isn't that great; 640x480, but if you're looking for greater resolution, make sure you're willing to pay the extra premium. You may not be able to tell a person's eye color, but you'll get a general image and somewhat of a good picture of who or what you're viewing.

-The mounting system that's shipped with this unit is an eyesore when you install it. It's like a little shelf you put the camera on that sticks out on the wall with an arm holding the actual camera. Could have made a better solution, but it still works well.

3 out of 5 eggsIt does the job

Pros: Setup is fairly painless and does not require specific routers. The pan and tilt is quick and quiet. This digital eye also has ears, you can hear sound remotely even on mobile. There's a fairly long 8 foot power cable and mounting equipment.

With the mobile software or mydlink webpage you can toggle the microphone, the IR (nightvision), take a photo, and pan/tilt.

The IP camera has it's own web interface so you can skip the mydlink cloud service if you don't want mobile access.

Cons: The setup software can be frustrating. Registering for a mydlink account via the software does not work initially since you must verify the email address. It will time-out after three minutes and if you hit Escape, it will close the software forcing you to start over.

After activating, you realize the software is for setup only. There is no installable software to view or manage your cameras, it's all done via the mydlink web interface.

Additionally, if you choose not to add the camera to mydlink initially, you must run setup all over again just to add it.

The web interface would normally be ok, but there are no hot-keys to move the camera, so you must click tiny arrows. It also requires Java runtime, which is not desirable for many.

The video quality is 480P, but it's a blurry and distorted in a fish-eye manner. The small, 480P video size makes the digital zoom practically worthless, so it's more of a PT than a PTZ camera.

The network cable required to set up the camera is only 3 feet long. The power cable is 8 feet, so that is odd.

Enabling the IR (nightvision) makes a strong "click" sound.

There is no Windows Phone app, only iOS and Android.

My major gripe with the web-based interface via mydlink is the settings can't be modified because it wants you to select a network, but no networks show up. Plus it's already connected to a network, so why even bother selecting one? It's an easy fix surely, but a big gripe at this point.

Overall Review: It seems like dlink did a decent job with the camera hardware itself, but the software solution needs some work and I'm sure they'll work out the issues over time.

They definitely need some software to view a grid of cameras instead of a web interface where you see one at a time.

This camera really shines when paired with the mobile software. Hopefully they'll get a Windows Phone version.

4 out of 5 eggsMissing a few key features

Pros: 1.) Wireless

2.) Looks neat (more of an intimidating look than anything else)

3.) Fairly simple setup though the internet

4.) Good day and night images

5.) 4x zoom

6.) Pans and Tilts easily

7.) Built in microphone picks up a lot of sound

8.) Comes with decent mounting kit and Ethernet cable

Cons: 1.) No CD included (not a huge issue, but its just nice to have)

2.) Not enough features with the online MyDlink options (see below for explanation)

3.) Its a little bulky (not horribly big, but compared to other units its on the large side)

4.) Has to be plugged in, (the power cord is pretty long, but if you set it up outside you will need to route the cord to an outlet)

5.) Plastic feels a little cheap

Overall Review: I own other D-Link wireless cameras, specifically the D-Link DCS-933L. I am comparing this unit (DCS5010L) to the 933L since they are almost the same price. I am basing my review off of my needs and the other cameras in this price range.

When I received this unit I was surprised to see how big it was compared to the 933L. Its much larger and that is mostly due to its ability to tilt and pan unlike the 933L. Besides that, they are both similar in function and ability since the other options software based. The easiest way to setup is just to go to the D-link website and download the installer and create an account. Ya, you have to have an internet connection, but honestly who doesn't? It does live stream video, will take a snapshot and also record video. These are all done with a pretty easy step by step instructions that come with the unit. I use the internet option with mydlink service, so I can't comment on the ease of setup without the service or from behind the router. But you need to setup an account to use the mydlink service and its fairly simple to get going.

I actually had trouble recording with this device though. Not exactly sure why, but its not as simple as viewing a live stream because they don't have option to record with the MyDlink online service. You need to download another service called "D-ViewCam" and install that to be able to record. So my question is, why can't they just have an option under the cloud service that is already installed? But, it works pretty well either way and does have a lot of recording options once you get it going. I had it setup with my Synology NAS and it worked fine. Also, It does have a good motion detect system that will automatically open and record/stream when a motion is detected. Night vision is surprisingly good also. We were able to see our neighbors come to our door with the front porch light off.

You can also control the camera with an iOS or Android app. Its super easy to setup, all you do is download the app from an app store and put in your account name and password. Then select your camera and boom your able to use the camera from your phone. (personally I won't be using this option often, but maybe for a small business or someone that wants to always have an eye on their house it might be useful)

My opinion on this unit is that its a pretty good network camera if you want basic and simple. Its a little bulky and feels a little flimsy, but for the price what can you expect. Its not a professional camera so don't expect it to work like one. In my opinion if your getting this unit for basic Network Camera options, its perfect for the price. It has most of the options that most home users and small businesses will need. If your in the market for that kind of Camera, this won't disappoint.

3 out of 5 eggsEggXpert Review - DCS-5010L

Pros: Decent network camera, I must admit this is the first time I've handled something quite like this, so I didn't really know what to expect. For starters, I was amazed at how easy it was to configure and setup, I had it running in about 15 minutes and found it very easy to access from my computers and portable devices *Phone - Galaxy S 4 and tablet - Nexus 7 2013*

Overall though, I was very underwhelmed when I saw the image on my computer, as it's a low res 640x480 resolution, image quality isn't the best. Though on smaller screens, it looks decent.

Night vision worked very well, though on my particular unit the motion detection was very spotty and slow to respond.

Cons: Slow motion tracking, and cheap build quality. Though for the price of admission I really can't fault the product too much for this. Though I'd have a really hard time justifying spending more than $79.99 on this cam.

I'd say the 94.99 is a bit steep.

Android app wasn't as responsive as the iOS counterpart that my brother tested this camera with on his iPad 4

Overall Review: Cool concept ip wireless camera that works well, but isn't anything out of this world.

Overall the poor image quality and price ruin the experience and make this product just another "meh" tech device.

In a pinch this camera would be good for remote monitoring of a small space such as a shipping container or a small warehouse, but imo there are better products out there...

3 out of 5 eggsreliable ip camera: UPDATE

Pros: This camera has been running very reliably on my wireless network for a couple weeks. I have not had to touch it at all since installation was completed. The Mount is very easy to install and seems sturdy enough. All the mounting screws are included with anchors and a template. I'm getting a good range with it and I'm able to pick up my network through two interior walls and one exterior wall with the camera mounted on my detached garage. The optional app for android works decent with my Samsung galaxy note 2 smart phone. Remote controls using my phone is very convenient and works well. The built in microphone works great. Has a WPS button that worked perfectly.

Cons: I had no luck installing this camera while following the included manual and after 5 failed attempts I just used the WPS button and it worked on the first try. No built in recording function aside from short videos or pictures triggered from motion detection events. The low resolution does effect is usefulness in my long driveway, and the manual focus is hard to set. I had no luck setting up email alerts through my Gmail or my Hotmail accounts. Zoom is not very useful at all with the low quality image.

Overall Review: Even though I had some issues getting it connecting to the network I was able to use WPS easily and I probably should have just done that in the first place. I'm pleased with the ease of use while using my android and being able to move the camera remotely. The low resolution doesn't work well where I've got it mounted because of the long range it needs to view and the zoom just doesn't cut it, so I plan on relocating it somewhere more confined and getting an upgraded HD version for the driveway.

I would love to see some internal storage for easy recording or a backup if the network fails for some reason. I also think that the camera should be higher resolution since most phones nowadays even have at least 720p capabilities.

4 out of 5 eggsnice beginner camera

Pros: Easy access to the camera from anywhere using the MyDLink website. Good overall picture and video quality. Setup was a breeze. solid connection to wireless. FTP and email settings are nice for recording events. Movement detection sensitivity is very good on high. Captures even the slightest movements on 90%. Example don't use 90% if you have a ceiling fan running above the area being recorded.

Cons: Movement via the Web UI or smart phone is clunky at best. Smart phone/tablet functions are very limited.

Overall Review: Overall a great camera for starting out if you don't need a full DVR setup. I would use this at a vacation home or something of that nature with uploading movement events to an FTP.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, easy to basic-setup camera

Pros: > The built quality seems to be good. The camera is light but does not feel cheap. Comes with Ethernet cable and long power cable.
> Wireless N is supported - but not AC.
> There is no software CD included, which some might see as a con. But it is always recommended to download newest software from manufacturer website. D-link forces you to do so by not including a cd in the box.
> Manual is straight forward and can be downloaded from d-link website as a PDF.

> Multiple ways of setting up the camera. D-Link cloud service is totally optional, very limited, yet the easiest way to start enjoying the camera.

> Direct http access to the camera itself reveals advanced configuration options - for advanced users only - see cons.

> Basic setup for use with mydlink.com cloud service is very easy. Just run the installation wizard found on the website and in few minuted youare good to go.
> mydlink - Software support for windows and macOS.
> H.254 codec support.
> Wide angle lens in addition to pan & tilt results in a huge field of view.
> VGA resolution 640x480 is adequate for basic monitoring.
> Night mode using IR LEDs gave surprisingly good and clear picture.
> D-Link mobile access apps work great and are really easy to use on iPhone, iPad and android device. Full Pan/Tilt functionality. The video stream uses dlink servers so there is no advanced setup required for remote access.
> Viewing remotely you are able to hear audio stream, pan/tilt the camera and take snapshots (see cons)

Cons: > First off, 3rd party java run-time environment plugin required to even install the device by dlink setup wizard. Support for Internet Explorer only. - That should be enough for some to pass on that device.
> As far as mydlink cloud setup was easy, it only gives access to basic functionality - you can view the live stream easily, but that's about it. Attempts to setup motion detection and alerts failed.
> D-Link D-viewCam software is designed for CCTV monitoring setups. Is very clunky when used in home environment and is difficult to setup.
> Direct http access to the camera itself reveals advanced setup options, where you can configure everything manually. Connection type, DynDNS is supported, motion detection, video recording and email alerts (the only way i got this to work). However, the video recordings triggered by motion detection can be only saved on a user configured FTP server. That requires the user to have an access to a FTP server online, or setting one up on the network attached PC - again Advanced Users only!

Overall Review: This wi-fi camera is a good choice for both not-advanced user that look for basic functionality and advanced user that is looking for fully functional home/office surveillance wi-fi camera. However, not advanced user that would like to setup this camera for home/office surveillance using all options available is difficult. I strongly recommend downloading user manual and reading it before starting the setup.

The live feed monitoring is of good video/audio quality. Mydlink cloud interface is easy to configure and intuitive to use.

When configured correctly, the surveillance capabilities are unlimited.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: >Solid Hardware
>Pan/Tilt/Zoom controllable through internet
>Wi-Fi capable

Cons: >Java required; I consider this HUGE
>Mobile App is split between paid and free version
>Has to be manually focused
>Pan/Tilt controls are clunky

Overall Review: I had high hopes because of the packaging. In the past, I've found that plain packing generally means a solid product, that the marketing team doesn't feel like they need to compensate. That is not entirely the case this time.

The camera essentially is run by code that exists somewhere between "simple website" and "router firmware". This means it is easy to deploy Java, but in this day and age of HTML5 and Java vulnerabilities, I really dislike this.

To be clear, I cannot tell if this camera uses Java internally; I couldn't care about this for the most part. But the website you access requires you to have Java installed in order to view the video stream. I avoid Java installations on my personal computers at all costs these days; I recently got a malicious BitCoin miner by just visiting a compromised site (because of a 1x1 Java frame), most recent Java was installed (older versions removed).

I am going to see what I can find for alternative firmwares. If that fails, I will see what I can do about mkaing my own firmware, using HTML5 video objects instead of Java objects.

Really, it is only the software I take issue with. The only gripe I have about the hardware is the manual zoom. You can set the focus once, and that should be good for the most part, but not everything you may want to see will be at the same focal distance.

3 out of 5 eggsSome Pointers

Pros: see below

Cons: see below

Overall Review: I've been reading some of the other reviews, and others are having some trouble, so here's some additional data. On a Windows Vista or newer machine, if you set this up on your network, you can use Network Discovery to find the device. Once there, click on it and your web browser will take you to the no-dlink-required administration page for purely offline thrills.

Another point worth mentioning is that this device, if you're setting it up with gmail like I did, doesn't have the correct smtp settings, and it also likely requires an "application specific password" as many legacy items do with gmail. Just mentioning so that my fellow users can get all the work out of their cameras; I'm sure they work, it just takes time, and some networking knowhow.

3 out of 5 eggsFlawed

Pros: - Nice Features: Pan/Tilt, Audio, Day/Night, WPS
- Comes with Mounting Hardware and even a Template
- Better Built than I thought it would be

Cons: - Software
- Slow
- No Installation CD

Overall Review: This camera has the potential to be great, but it is ruined by poor D-Link software. I have had nothing but trouble attempting to get my computers to be able to control the camera through the D-Link D-ViewCam software, the software that is needed to record and monitor the camera with a computer. With pretty much every configuration I have tried, I have been able to access the camera online, but the software cannot manage to find it. The only time I have gotten it to work is when I had the camera wired.

The camera is a little slow overall. There is a noticeable increase in speed and a decrease in lag when using the desktop software over the mobile app, but it is still a little bit slow for me.

When I first got this camera, the first thing I did was read the instructions. I didn't think anything of it when I read that I needed to unzip a folder and click on autorun. I then proceeded to unpack the rest of the box and search around for 15 minutes thinking that I had misplaced the disk. It wasn't until my third read of the Install Guide (no big feat since it's 9 pages long) that I noticed a grayed out little box that said you have to download everything from their website. Would have been a little nicer to have that fact a little more obvious.

Overall, I think this is not too terrible a product, but I also think that there are better products on the market for a comparable price. I would recommend this camera for someone who only wants to use it for viewing from a distance, not someone who would use this for recording or surveillance.

1 out of 5 eggsLousy Hunk-O-Junk

Pros: -Looks kind of menacing. Almost scary LOL.

-Came with all the cables needed (if you consider a 10 foot electrical plugin and a 3 foot Ethernet plugin to be sufficient. Even if I use my Poweline adapters this thing wouldn’t work next to a window pointing outside to see the front door (mounting it near the top inconspicuously).

-Which brings me to the next pro; it comes with a wall mount bracet and mounting screws.

-And THIS is where all the good news ends.
.
.

Cons: -No installation CD. You must go to the website to get the required software, and THEN (little will you know until you have set the thing up you can’t use it without a program called “D-View Cam” which is the “console” management program.
Hmmm… no picture. So off to Google I go. The second link in results for “dcs-5010l no picture in d-viewcam” (D-Link forums) shows this person has the same issues as me. The question is: “The manual informs that D-ViewCam is available with DCS-5010L. However, D-ViewCam cannot detect this camera and this camera is not listed under camera list from D-ViewCam. Has anyone successfully added this camera to D-ViewCam?” – there were NO responses from D-Link since June 25, 2013 with 311 views to that thread posting.
You see I am going through the “back door” so to speak by using Google to get the links I need. So I thought I might as well go through the “front door” as if I were an unknowledgeable person trying to set this thing up and running. Guess what? Datasheets, manual, and quick install guide are THE only thing listed under the downloads tab. What a pain in the … There is another guy on YouTube that feels the same way as me. Look up “DLink Camera Smash”.
-After a couple more HOURS of deliberation I discovered, “The D-Link Camera Wizard only supports Internet Explorer 6 or higher” (quoted right from D-Link’s website). So I am done dealing with this camera. I don’t use InterJunk Exploder, so this camera is absolutely 100% useless to me. Besides, 640x480 isn’t enough resolution to even make me use IE.
.
.

Overall Review: -I was ONLY trying to set this cam up from “behind” a router (not connecting through the internet) and I gave up on this piece of junk after 3 hours of trying to get it to work from behind my router and finally gave up. Knowing this is going to be one short review, I decided to give it a try as if I actually WANTED this thing and bought it for the intended use; to be my new security camera for my home instead of a Newegg EggXpert review item.

-I absolutely REFUSE to connect this camera to a live internet connection just to get it to work (IF that’s what has to be done. There are plenty enough privacy issues with the internet without letting my camera ALSO give visual access to my private dwelling. If I can’t set it up to simply pick up motion and capture video data to my hard drive without connecting to the internet (setting it up behind the router), then this unit is 100% useless.

-If you use any browser other than Internet Explorer, forget this camera, it’s useless.

-I will be offering this a free giveaway on Craigslist for anyone that wan’t to come pick it up. If no one comes, I may just make my own YouTube video.

-I hope NOT, but I FULLY expect the manufacturer to leave their notes as to how I MUST have done something wrong (I have seen it before) and to contact them without leaving me an option to respond (because this is NOT a forum) thus making me look unknowledgeable or something. D-Link if you REALLY want to fix this problem, put an installation CD with all required software (THAT WORKS) included in the package.

Thank you again Newegg for allowing me another great opportunity to review.

3 out of 5 eggsA good starter cam but there are better out there

Pros: * D-Link allows you do download a version of their network software called “mydlink Lite App” for viewing your live cloud camera feed on your smart phone from anywhere using Wi-Fi or a 3G/4G connection. It will also let you control your D-Link router if you have one. This is what I use my cameras for mostly; spying on my family while I’m at work on my Samsung Galaxy S2 smart phone. I like to occasionally check in, when I’m feeling lonely, curious or just want to see what people are doing in my house. The bright green LED on front of the camera starts flashing when the camera is being accessed so my wife and children know when I’m looking in on them. I have a camera in the family room and one in the bonus room. You can control the pan and tilt with the app as well, which in my case allows me to gaze from the bonus room, ninety degrees to the right and look down the hallway, or look from the family room, and into the kitchen with the other camera. I can also hear what is going on through the camera.

* One neat thing that can be done is to use this camera as a security camera while you are away on vacation or even just at work while nobody else is in the house. I set up my cam using the supplied web interface to activate on detected motion, to record 15 seconds of video and immediately upload it to my personal FTP space given to me by my ISP (Comcast). It will repeat this procedure as long as it sees motion. It will also take a three digital photos, a snapshot when motion is detected, one three seconds prior to motion detected, and on three seconds after motion is detected, which it then immediately sends via email to my smart phone. Ironically, a nearby family on vacation caught a burglar in their home using this very technology just this week which ended up in the local news.

* There are a lot of software features that came with this camera. Things such as being able to turn on automatic motion detection during specified times on specific days and even turn on or off motion detection at specific areas of the visual frame for example, and then having the ability to send video to a network video recorder. You can set night vision (IR LED activation) to automatic or set up activation times manually for each day of the week. You can control the sensitivity of the built in microphone and also the sensitivity of the motion detector. I’m glad D-Link included the many preference settings that they did as I like to micro manage my devices with full control over what they do.

* Setup was pretty easy and my network detected the camera instantly. I have this camera connected via Ethernet cable to a Netgear R6200 Router that I have configured as a bridge, which talks to my Trendnet TEW-812DRU wireless router that is connected to my Windows 7 PC. Setup can be a little lengthy but only due to the many customizable configuration options you get to sort through.

* The camera also comes with wall mount hardware.

Cons: * This camera uses the same hardware as the DCS-5020L which I also reviewed for Newegg and you can read on that page, so a lot of what I have to say about this camera is similar to that one. Picture quality is about what you would expect from a web cam, stinky. The camera’s highest resolution is a lowly 640x480, filled with pixelated, artifact filled, and color washed pictures. This is of course just my opinion as my eyes are accustomed to the clarity of SLR lenses and 1080p video. My wife tells me the picture “looks fine” and I suppose that considering you are probably not going to use this cam as a family vacation photo shooting device, others may consider the picture “fine” as well. But not me. Why does D-Link even make a dedicated 640x480 camera when even budget point and shoot cameras that cost no more than this one support high resolutions? D-link does make a 720P HD version of this camera (the DCS-5222L) for about $100 more, which is the likely reason they offer a low resolution cheaper version… $100. The thing is though, I don’t believe that is what it actually costs D-Link to add 720p to a camera, not even close, I think it’s all marketing leverage and they are simply milking the consumer cow.

* This camera does not support the 802.11ac Wi-Fi format. I know not many devices do yet, but that would be a great bonus as video transmission requires a high bandwidth. I have an 802.11ac router and this would be a perfect application for using with 802.11ac. It would also validate using multiple high resolution cameras.

* The digital zoom is horrible. You know the old adage “garbage in, garbage out”? Digitally zooming in on a grainy low resolution shot makes my eyes sad. I will never use this. There is also a manual rotating lens focusing ring on the camera that you have to adjust whenever you need to fix the focus. Hey D-Link, 1980 called and he wants his camera lens focusing technology back.

* There is no slot to plug in a micro SD card to record video to like the HD version DCS-5222L making this camera unable to be a stand-alone device. You need to be connected to your computer or router at all times.

* The web interface software is kind of buggy. It sometimes crashes, and you have to click through multiple danger alerts from Java (required) telling me how the application could pose a security concern. Both Chrome and Internet Explorer did work for me though but Chrome locks up occasionally.

* The mobile application software works OK. I just wish you could access all the camera’s settings from it. You are basically stuck with pan/tilt, night vision, and sound on/off. I am assuming that because the video goes through D-Link servers, the stream is slowed down to 1-7 frames per second, regardless of what I set the video quality to, how strong a 4gLTE signal I am getting or whether or not my camera was attached wirelessly or hardwired to my PC.

* Only a 1 year limited warranty so don’t mount this outdoors, it is for indoor

Overall Review: There was no software installation CD, which can be a pro or a con depending on how you look at it. I downloaded and installed the software which was easy enough to find on D-Link’s site. I then input network settings so the camera could find my router and I was done. You must use an Ethernet cable during initial installation and firmware updates. I did update my firmware from version 1.0 to version 1.1 first thing, and I did it through my wireless bridge, which I was a little concerned about, but it all worked flawlessly. Also, you only get the quick install guide pamphlet in the box. If you want the full blown user manual, you must download it from D-Link’s website.

There is no range extender or audio detection, or a few other features that the DCS-5020L offers, but I’m not going to mention those as pros or cons, as they are something you are technically not paying for anyway.

The camera can do both MJPEG and H.264 video. The only difference I can see between the two is that H.264 is smoother with better colors, contrast and detail while MJPEG has less real time lag. I did discover that the camera only sends MJPEG to my mobile phone, regardless of what I have it set to record when using the D-Link viewer app.

If you are on a limited mobile data plan and use the mobile camera app very much, be prepared to see some huge data usage. I’m on a 2 gigabyte per month plan, which I’ve never exceeded before getting this camera. I ended up paying for 4 gigabytes by the month’s end ($10 a gig for each gig over the plan) so this camera just cost me $20 more than I was expecting. Just something to think about before your purchase.

The camera is not huge but it’s not small either. It’s big enough that it is yelling out “Hey! I’m obviously a camera here looking at you!” and you also won’t be able to use it in stealthy operations very easily. The CIA probably won’t be purchasing these anytime soon. It has an adjustable antenna that I discovered makes a notable difference in received signal strength when you move it to different positions (a signal strength detector being another great software feature offered with this camera).

Overall, I do like this camera but I would definitely opt for more resolution, more mobile app function, a two way microphone and perhaps a stealthier footprint. Would I recommend this to a friend? No, but I would recommend it’s more advanced brother, the DCS-5222L based on the fact that it can do 720p video and two way audio. I give this 3 of 5 stars because it basically works like it should and has some great features that other brand cameras lack, but this also lacks certain features that would greatly improve this product overall. This review is just my honest opinion on this product as an EggXpert reviewer and everyday consumer, and I get no incentive from anyone according to what I write.

2 out of 5 eggsSoftware needs some TLC

Pros: 1) Basic setup was quick, past experience has taught me that I need to turn off my Wireless ACL settings if I am connecting a new device.
2) Firmware update was quick and easy (requires manual download)
3) Fairly small and light
4) Long power cord, so it should reach your desired location
5) Comes with a mount, if you need it
6) Night vision is cool
7) Pan, zoom, and tilt via software (sometimes, see below)
8) MyDlink.com was easy to use, but basic in the options available
9) DLink app was easy to use on my wifes iPhone 4S

Cons: 1) D-ViewCam Software forces the disabling of UAC when installed on Windows 8. This meant that the Windows Store couldn’t be opened and for some reason, Office 2013 would not launch until UAC was enabled again.
2) D-ViewCam Software barely supports the DCS-5010L. It won’t auto detect it, so it has to be added manually. I was only able to pan/zoom/tilt from the intranet and MyDlink pages, never from the software
3) D-ViewCam Software acts like a Windows 8 application in that it takes up the entire screen with a black background (no windowed option), but it is really a desktop app.
4) MyDlink.com does not support Windows Phone with an app OR through the website, so that means you get NOTHING if you have a Windows Phone. I can understand the lack of a WP8 application at this time, but it is very disappointing that there is no option for a mobile website.
5) It has to talk to the outside world. There is no option for you be an island with your camera and the videos or stills. I get the idea behind the internet options, I might not have been able to finish this review if it weren’t for MyDlink.com (see the D-ViewCam debacle above). But… for those who don’t need to use the cloud offerings, the option to turn off internet access and stay within my network would have been a welcomed site.

Overall Review: Not sure if these are cons or not, but here are a few more items.
1) Intranet page requires Java be installed. Without it, you will not be able to view live video unless you go to the MyCloud site. I installed 1.7.0_25 so I could test this thing out.
2) Aiming the camera out the window at night gives you a really bad glare from the night vision lights. I can’t say this is a con since it is an indoor camera being aimed out the window.
3) Software is only available via download. I normally do this anyway to get the latest release. This could be problematic for some depending on their access and setup options.

This was my first foray with a surveillance camera like this. I like the idea, but there were some serious shortcomings for me. The camera felt fine and the picture was good despite the low resolution. My issues are with the software specifically, both the downloadable software and the limited MyDlink site (lack of Windows Phone support). Hopefully some updates to both will bring new features/functions and open the door for more users.

I settled on 2 eggs because the software was a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing cameras

Pros: My experience: I have worked with several camera systems involving several dozen cameras. This is one of the easiest IP cameras I've worked with and definitely the best value available right now (December, 2013). I own four of these cameras, all purchased from Newegg, and each one is performing perfectly.

1. Setup is fairly easy for a tech savvy person. If you are not comfortable downloading a wizard based setup file from the Dlink website, you are not experienced enough to set up this camera. Since you're reading this on Newegg, I assume you can download a program, plug in a power cord, press a button on the camera, then press a button on your router. That's it. Not too difficult! Dlink's setup wizard automatically finds the camera(s) on your network and ties them to your free Dlink account. View from anywhere in the world via web or mobile app.

2. The web based GUI (graphical user interface) is really excellent and easy to use. If you're familiar with Dlink routers, this will look identical just with different options. I really like how Dlink has kept their products similar in their management tools. You can view the camera, set presets for pan and tilt, and change motion detection settings and much more.

3. Great picture quality in low and bright light. The camera adjusts automatically. There are several infrared led's surrounding the camera providing more night vision light than you'll get with many similar cameras.

4. Pan and tilts works flawlessly. For a camera in this price range, I am amazed at the smoothness and reliability of the pan and tilt.

5. The MyDlink website and mobile apps provide very easy access to the cameras and live sound as well as pan and tilt control. You can also add the cameras to the Dlink Main Console software to get a full featured and automated DVR system to go with your cameras. It works with up to 32 cameras at a time! With the free console software, you can even set up preplanned motion paths for the pan and tilt to patrol.

6. IP access is really flexible. In addition to the Dlink software, web viewer, and mobile app, I have these connected to a free Android app called IP Cam Viewer. You can really connect these cameras to just about any software or app that supports IP cameras. The couple of reviews from people who couldn't figure out how to view the feeds clearly didn't do enough research. A simple Google search for "dlink ip cam setup" will get you a long ways.

7. The price is right! No other camera with this functionality and the reliability of Dlink is available for this price. You can get a cheapo knockoff but the Dlink hardware and software is top notch and remarkably affordable! You could literally have a complete camera network with 32 pan and tilt motion sensing color and night vision cameras with DVR and automated patrolling for under 2 grand. That is absurdly affordable. My four cameras cost me a little over $200 and I couldn't be happier. Much better than my last cameras which

Cons: My only complaints are that the Dlink mobile app doesn't use presets for pan and tilt and the pan and tilt buttons on the app are a bit too small. Other than that, the mobile app is fantastic.

I typically use IP Cam Viewer anyway which does work with pan and tilt presets and also gives me larger buttons to control the pan and tilt directly.

I can think of no negatives for the camera itself. If you just want a basic setup, you can do that with the MyDlink system and be up and running in about 10-15 minutes from unboxing. I was down to 4 minutes setup time for each of my last two cameras. The couple of reviewers who had a hard time setting these up must have weird things setup on their home router or just didn't follow the simple instructions. If you want a more advanced setup, you probably know what you are doing and will be able to get exactly what you want in an hour or so.

Overall Review: I've used several security cameras and these are by far my favorite. IP cameras give the most reliability, expand-ability, and flexibility. This is the best value IP camera I've seen so far.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent camera

Pros: Do yourself a favor and download the app setup from Dlink. If you are using Apple product, the setup is pretty straightforward. No messing around with port forwarding or secondary no-ip, or dyndns nonsense. Dlink takes care of this through their portal. And through the portal you will be able to access your camera's native portal (looks just like their router portal - for those who are familiar with their routers).

Cons: Only complaint I have is that panning the camera is not a smooth operation via the dlink portal. It requires you to keep pressing the arrow after release. The camera pans in increments.

secondly it is an 80 bucks camera. I don't understand why some of my fellow reviewers are expecting 1000 dollar performance in their security setup. Excellent performance calls for expensive equipment - just saying….
This is simply for fooling around…and learning.

Overall Review: Great IR. In a pitch black room, I get a decent resolution. Buy this camera on sale. Paying full price is foolish.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy

Pros: Easy to set up
MyD-link Lite App works fine
Wireless option works fine
Video Quality is good and the audio picks up all noises in the house.
Includes all connection cables and mounting hardware.

Cons: D-link software uses Java which limits which internet browser you can use.
Picture quality really decreases when zooming in.
I wish the software was better. I will probably switch to third party software.

Overall Review: I am very happy with the two cameras I purchased. I use them to check on my children.
Be sure to read the setup guide prior to using. You must hook them up directly to your router with the first use, so the firmware can update (about 15 min). Night vision works well inside my house. Wifi worked one floor below my router. The app worked well on my Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab 2. Didn't work as well on my wife's LG Lucid 2 phone. I have ordered another D-Link camera, since I liked these so much.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Upgrade the Firmware!!!!

Pros: Pan and Tilt features. Can connect by myDlink website or mobile app. Seemed to function as promised, untill.....(see Cons)

Cons: Do not upgrade to the latest firmware (1.05_b8)!! Once upgraded all the features that made this product great are LOST! How can D-Link put out a firmware and then state that they are working to correct the issue? Don't they test before putting it out there? My other camera with older firmware (1.03_b8) still functions correctly.

Overall Review: Product worked great in keeping an eye out on my family and home while away. These things are JUNK if the firmware/website isn't maintained well. PLEASE FIX!!!

5 out of 5 eggsYou can't ask for better at this price

Pros: This camera is full of features and I love it. It has everything you could ask for in a security camera and the best part is the price!! I bought four.

Cons: One of my cameras loses configuration once a month or so...don't know why. It is like auto-factory reset. I have to unmount the camera and reconfigure. It is very difficult to talk to Dlink support since wait time is usually exceptionally long....hours and hours. There was no answer on Dlink community forum either.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback and we are sorry to hear that you are encountering difficulties with one of your cameras. 2 out of 5 eggs0.3 megapixels, really?

Pros: PTZ works well, android app works well, communication is also good. Works, just dont have high expectations.

Cons: resolution is poor, at 10 feet it is hard to make out a smile or frown, at 15 feet forget it. sure at 4 feet you get a pretty picture but really what do you need a PTZ for then? The Apple app is very bad, the "Main Console" program that gives you lots of features is very buggy, some features work, and some don't and this changes on each PC. Tech support ?? Nice people but a speaking and comprehension test should be required. Sorry, but i shouldnt have to repeat myself 3 times ever so slowly for these folks to understand.

Overall Review: with a market full of high megapixel image sensors you wonder why do they use a low resolution image sensor in this PTZ. with a better sensor this could be a nice camera

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we truly value the input and we are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with your purchase. D-Link advises you to download and install the latest firmware from www.support.dlink.com. In addition make sure you have selected the highest resolution in the cameras settings. To do that, log into the cameras web interface and click on "Video" located under that "Setup" tab and select the highest resolution and FPS. Just be aware that the higher the quality, the more resources it will take up in your network. You can also call us at 1-877-453-5465 for further assistance. We thank you for choosing D-Link.

1 out of 5 eggsRemote Viewing App does not work over 3G/4G LTE.

Pros: Camera itself is well built. Image is clear. Easy to setup.

Cons: The mobile apps for the camera no longer works over mobile data since the last two updates. They basically broke what used to work. The app MyDlink Lite does not work when try to connect over 3G/4G network. When I contacted Dlink tech support, the support person could provide no help to my problem at all and even said "Remote viewing of camera does not guarantee to work over 3G/4G". Then what do i buy this camera for?

5 out of 5 eggsD-Link DCS-5010L Cloud Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Easy setup, Day/ Night , Pan & Tilt, Remote or Local network, Wireless, One way Audio. Motion Detection & photo function.

Cons: Camera control app can hesitate (delay in camera movement), NOT 2 way audio (But stated clearly in description that its one way), Not full 1080P but I bought it knowing that.

Overall Review: I bought one DCS-501L about two months ago and love it. It's not the best out there but if you get them when Newegg has them on sale you can't go wrong. Since the first purchase I have bought 2 more, all working as advertised.

Pros: Has served perfectly for watching over our puppy when we're not at home. The software/apps have been continually updated for improved performance.

Cons: Resolution is a tad lacking, but was expected.

4 out of 5 eggsD-Link DCS-5010L- nice for small application

Pros: for the cost.... great pic, great controls, wireless works real well, remote access is a big selling point for me. i can see my location from my phone or work. ftp and email setup was not difficult. great feature to save offsite. sound quality is very good.

Cons: my only real knock on these cameras is the motion detection feature. its not really motion based. i believe its light sensitivity. so you will get many false alarms. Once you figure out the pattern of sensitivity you get used to the email notifications that are just false alarms. customize it is all i can say. it takes some tweaking.

Overall Review: taking the price into consideration its a great camera and monitoring system. good for beginners to intermediates. if you want something with superb quality go else where. if you need a real pro system go else where. if you need a simple system to monitor a home or even small business without spending alot of money or getting to complicated in terminology and networking then this might be for you. if running wires is a problem in a home then consider this system. ( keep in mind you need a good wireless router/device to broadcast your wireless signal). i run 3 and am very happy with it.

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic Camera

Pros: Pan/Tilt/Zoom, remote and local access and the ability to toggle night vision

Cons: Night vision/IR mode lets visible light show from ring, would prefer it was invisible

Overall Review: Great camera for the price when I picked it up for $69 on sale. I have 2 of these and 2 930L models for my home security.

5 out of 5 eggsPleasantly Surprised

Pros: Great choice for inexpensive camera ( under a hundred on sale)

Cons: Not for the impatient or beginner

Overall Review: Although I have a dropcam, this was such a great sale price, I thought I’d take a chance.
Very happy with results. Although the picture isn’t HD like dropcam, it’s perfectly acceptable.
I’d rate it between good and very good.

Great that you can use wireless router after initial hardwire set up.
Got ‘motion detected’ email alerts to work using G-mail. Never had any luck with Hotmail.
It sends a 5 second video clip to your email (when configured in D-Link settings.)
* a little tip, when configured click ‘save settings’ before you click ‘test’

Although it was up and running in minutes, I did spend a few hours getting the alerts configured .

My wife put the app on her Verizon Droid cell phone , worked perfect.
No regrets here . I’d recommend it.

4 out of 5 eggsReasonably good performance.

Pros: relatively easy to use once set up.
great night vision.
wide view angle

Cons: wireless set up by WPS is not a fool-proof
optics not reliable. focus adjustment ring is like from a toycam.
low fps(10,15,20) options makes images very laggy and it drops frames.

Overall Review: great once you know what you are doing.

Pros: Does exactly what it says it will do. No more no less.

Cons: It looks like darth vader's head. Also, if they could cut the size in half. Its a little big to have on your living room wall.

Overall Review: Need to make it smaller so if someone breaks in they dont see it. Or if they cops unlawfully enter your home they dont see it either.

3 out of 5 eggswhat a surprise!

Pros: works inside the house, night vision works well

Cons: took hours to get working, must download software to work with only internet explorer. will not send signal through a wall, even with router on the other side.

Overall Review: needs Java and ActiveX, cannot read the big E on an eye chart with any level of zoom even after fine focus which is manual. So, don't expect to identify a burglar. The software crashes internet explorer

Cons: Very easy to install thru the router or WiFi and work perfect in my computers, my cellular (android) with iCloud and I have full control of the camera from my cellular or computer.
If you are not craze with quality of the video, I recommend this one. I just bought the DCS-5029L R, that have a HD 720p, and is a lot of better.

Pros: Review

- Night vision is very good for this price point
- Configuring the settings for using software other than the D-Link cloud is very flexible.
- This camera has a lot of capability.
- Price!

Cons: Review

- 640x480, there are better camera's out there but for the price of this unit you can't really complain.
- They are obviously security type cameras, they don't "blend" at all and if you notice it you will know right away what it is.

Overall Review: Review

- I use these in my home and they are obviously there, some people notice them and others don't.
- They are good camera's for the price, but do have short comings.

2 out of 5 eggsSetup Difficult

Pros: Construction quality seems to be good. Motors which move camera head are smooth and quiet. Image quality is okay . . . just.

Cons: I've spend more nine hours trying to get the bloody thing to connect to my wireless network and to the cloud through the browser. So far, cannot get the camera to connect and stream video. Be aware that it requires JAVA, despite recommendations of many security pros that JAVA be disabled because of security risks. Also received error msgs that the application cannot be installed on AMD systems. Overall, not pleased at all with this purchase and would definitely recommend against it. I bought two of them; will try further to get them up and running and will return if cannot. I'm not optimistic.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy

Pros: Viewing from your mobile phone is a nice feature.

Creates for peace of mind when I am away from home working late.

Cons: It will occasionally disconnect, which freaks me out sometimes.

Motion detection is alittle too sensitive. It seems that it will send me a warning message with just even a flicker of light.

Overall Review: I recommend to purchase two cameras. I have two dlink ip cameras, each a different model and in different rooms. In case one disconnects, then I switch to the other.

Eats up mobile phone data so remember to turn on your wifi.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback and are glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. To fix your motion detection problem, we advise you to change the level of sensitivity. To do this, log into the camera's settings and click on "Motion Detection" tab located in "Setup". Here you can adjust the motion detection sensitivity to fit your optimal use. If you have any more issues feel free to contact us for assistance by calling 1-977-453-5465. Thank you for being a D-Link customer.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Simple to set up and use. Surprisingly good GUI! Works fairly well and consistently. Never had a problem with connecting or app crashing, and it has never failed to do what I told it to do. Pretty remarkable for something in this price range.

Cons: Resolution is adequate, but not the best. Sound is very noisy - always has background static (kinda loud), even when there is no ambient sound. Makes real sounds difficult (though still possible) to understand.

Overall Review: It's difficult to find any functional camera with these features, in this price range. I'm quite pleased with it, overall. Not the best, but it has pan/tilt/night vision, a great user interface, and most important - always works. I can monitor my shop/office on my Galaxy phone from anywhere I go. To be honest, I haven't gone out of state, or country, so I don't know about that. 100 miles is no problem.

Pros: I have used D-Link cams for years and have always been completely satisfied. Easy set up, incredibly easy use. Email notification are simple to set up and "hot spots" are simple to configure. Unbelievable for the price.

3 out of 5 eggsBuggy firmware

Pros: Wifi, FTP, email, sound, motion detection, scheduling

Cons: Positioning motor is noisy for mic.

Sometimes switches to 15fps when set to 30fps.

Requires Java for live video.

Java applet is poorly written. If you access the camera via a web proxy, everything works except the live video!

Firmware is also poorly written. Daylight savings doesn't work for southern hemisphere time zones. (Some DLInk routers have the same problem!)

Firmware has strange inconsistencies. If you schedule images to upload via FTP, you can choose whether to create subdirectories on the server and what to name them, yet if you schedule video, there are less options and it will send them all into multiple subdirectories whether you want that or not.

Overall Review: Good quality for the price, but the pile of little bugs in their software are annoying, especially when they could be so easily fixed.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the comments and input and want to thank you for the feedback. We are sorry to hear that you encountered issues with the DCS-5010L and will pass on the information your provided to our Product Management team. Please make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware. 4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for what I paid

Pros: PTZ works just fine. Small lag to be expected. Mounts anywhere with supplied mounting bracket. Installed easy and setup wasn't difficult. Works with WPA TKIP. Very similar setup to Cisco SMB low res wifi cameras if anyone else has them. Got it on Black Friday for $49. Pretty good for a $50 camera w/ PTZ.

Cons: Runs same processes as Cisco WVC2300 so you cannot run both Main Consoles simultaneously. Made of all plastic which makes it seem less sturdy. Not great res even for a 640x480, not as good as the WVC2300 of same res.

Overall Review: I would buy another. Like I said, they aren't the best cameras in the 640 res range, but they hold their own and have PTZ which most don't.

Pros: Good quality both day and night. Night time viewing requires very little light. No buyers remorse here !

Cons: Wish the IR LEDs didn't glow as much as they do in the dark, but I can live with that..

5 out of 5 eggsQuick, Easy Setup

Pros: Quick, Easy Setup. Image Quality is good, but not great. Night Vision work well. Lit up a big living room. Color, or Black/White both are of equal quality. Free App works very good, with little lag. Not the smoothest movement with the pan/tilt but it does move, and move well for the price. I can't really see asking for much out of this product at this price range. The reviews that say it is really hard to setup, and the Apps are horrible, must not know anything at all about electronics, and probably don't have a decent smart phone. I am tech savy, but this requires little experience to setup. It is literally connecting power to camera, and downloading software from website. The Installation Wizard does the rest.

Cons: Including a CD with the installation wizard on it would be nice.

Overall Review: Webroot SecureAnywhere will register some of the DLL files that are needed to run the Java application on the actual website, as trojans. I had to make exceptions for those files, but other than that no other thoughts.

Pros: This camera works just as described, I really like it! Purchased 4 of these for home monitoring while away at work, and no regrets. I'm getting ready to order 2 more! A buddy picked two up after seeing how well they work.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat camera, easy setup

Pros: easy setup, great quality, remote access

Cons: dlink cloud service

Overall Review: I had these cameras set up in minutes with remote access through dlink cloud. I set up recording to my hard drive with free software from dlink. I wasn't impressed with viewing the camera from the mydlink website, the quality was not that good and moving the camera took forever. It also timed out after about a minute. I ended up just setting up some port forwards and logging into the camera directly.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Pretty Well

Pros: Decent image. PTZ works well. Audio works well. Automatic e-mails triggered by motion detection works. I have it set up in an apartment with blackout shades and it sees in a completely dark room.

Cons: Sensitivity of motion detect has to be adjusted. Not sure what the final setting will be, but 80% or higher results in false triggers.
Zoom is worthless. Image complety blocky at >2x zoom.
Setting up preset PTZ positions is harder than it should be.

Overall Review: Got it on sale. Worth the 70 dollar price.

Pros: nice tilt and pan feature and the night vision was clear to see everything for about 50 feet which was fine for me. the motion detection is nice too

Cons: the setup for this was frustrating for a secure connection. Dlink does not give you alot of info on how to do this. it would i wanted to install it upside down on the ceiling but it does not have a flip feature on the Dlink cloud website for the screen. the picture quality is ok but it was a little blocky. for what i was using it for was just fine for me but i would spend more money and buy the HD version if you want better picture quality for recording

3 out of 5 eggsNice Camera

Pros: Easy to set up and fun and nice to be able to check up on things at home. I have any elderly mother living with me, so this is more of a granny cam than a nanny cam.

Cons: This is more of a question than a review. I want to know if anyone can tell me how to adjust the motion control. I have set it as low as it goes I think and I am still getting too many false alarms and emails.

It says to set it from 0-100 sensitivity. I have it at 1 and it still picks up movement. Not sure of what except maybe a few leaves moving in the breeze?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Camera, DLink was an Allstar About it

Pros: This has been a great and faithful camera. Many of the reviewers have spelled out all the details so I don't need to as well, but its been great at detecting all the motion and uploading it to my email and FTP server.
---------------------------------------------------
I mostly came on here to commend DLINK for some excellent customer service. I was having some trouble with the camera, and their service rep that helped me was incredibly awesome. Also the wait time on the phones was basically 1 second.
Support Number: C6478822
Service Agent Code: AR004228

DLink is really doing well supporting their products, and that alone is worth buying the camera over another compay.

Cons: Might need to reset it week or so or else the video might start bugging out, there have been some firmware updates since I had those problem though so I think they took care of it.

Overall Review: Great Camera, great service, thank you!

1 out of 5 eggsHad a potential to be a great product but sucked

Pros: If you disregard the instructions, it's easy to install

Cons: Instructions are not clear with regards to how it's supposed to be added to the network. Especially if it's a WIFI related. You have to figure it up yourself.

After a few minutes that it worked, it got disconnected and I was not able to connect it again to the network.
The blue LED light for the WPS didn't lit anymore and seemed to not respond anymore.

Overall Review: I have the 5020 model that works fine. this one didn't work good at all. However, it's possible that the one I got was defected . However, I wish someone wrote the installation instructions better since it's really easy to install but the instructions won't get you there.

2 out of 5 eggssmart phone app issue

Pros: IP cam, u can view it anywhere when u have internet access.

Cons: My D-Link Lite app doesn't work on both my iPhone 5s and Samsung galaxy NOTE3. It CAN'T view the IP cam after 2 weeks (it works for the first 2 weeks). I submitted the ticket online at https://www.mydlink.com/contact, case # CSP14010499, I received the email confirmation, but no reply from Dlink tech support regarding this ticket. I can't reply to the email because it's generated by automatic system from "notification@mydlink.com", and the bottom of the email says "This e-mail message was sent from a notification-only address that cannot accept incoming e-mail."

I called Dlink support at (877) 453-5465, they can't find that online case #. So they created a new case for me, case # C6404540 , still no one give me a call back, and the mobile app still not working!!!!!

I can view the IP cam from any computer at home or at work to monitor my newborn, but CAN'T view it when I am away from a computer due to the mobile app issue. The error message keep saying "Video stream lost. The video stream from your device was lost. Please try again".

Please let me know if the IP cam is defective, so I can exchange for a good one.

Pros: Works like a charm. Easy set up. 640x480 resolution is clear as possible.

Cons: A little difficulty in initial set-up in making it so camera could be viewed remotely (following directions for use with non-D-Link router did not work for this). After 3 set up s though it's working great (using Dynamic IP instead of static thus far). Also remote control through "mylink" website allows for slow and challenging movement of webcam.

No techsupport or customer service at all, Dlink is not backing up their products!!!!!

My gmail keep receiving this email from my Dlink account in the subject of: mydlink alert:Dlink-DCS-5010L - Device Disconnected.

Dlink advertised as "access anywhere with iOS, Android and Windows phone mobile apps, you can access your device on-the-go". This is a false advertisement statement!!!!!! Put the phrase on google "The video stream from your device was lost. please try again" then you will how many complaints!!!!
