Computer Case Basics

There are generally four PC case form factors to choose from: full tower, mid-tower, mini-ATX and desktop computer cases. The last type is typically the kind of PC case that lays horizontally on a desktop rather than standing vertically. Beyond that, there are also server chassis and barebone PCs, but those are a little more exotic than the average PC builder needs.

Each computer case has different compartments inside to hold various components. Most ATX computer cases have spaces for a power supply, drive bays, a motherboard, and expansion cards. Depending on the type of computer case you get, the internal compartments will vary in shape and size. For instance, gaming computer cases will have deeper spaces for expansion slots because most gamers will install long video cards. Computer cases not designed for gaming may shorten that space to accommodate more storage drives.

Finally, all computer cases from full towers to micro ATX cases will have a way to vent heat. Ventilation is very important in your PC, since heat will degrade performance. Larger cases, like gaming computer towers, are designed to deal with heat quickly via several fans. Make sure your ATX tower has enough computer case fans to cool the components inside.
