The ATX (Advanced Technology Extended) form factor was created by Intel in 1995. It was the first big change in computer case and motherboard design in a long time. ATX took over AT completely as a standard form factor for new systems. Version 2.2 of the ATX form factor was issued in 2004.

The computer case or chassis encases and protects all computer components installed within it and provides a unified external appearance. It therefore plays a very significant role in the total computer system. Not only does the computer case affect the type and number of components that can be installed, its layout and design also determines the cooling performance and reliability of the entire system.
