Categories > Server Barebones > SuperMicro > SUPERMICRO SYS-5037A-i Mid-Tower Server Barebone LGA 2011 Intel C602 DDR3 1600/1333/1066

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Great system for the money
Pros: Very stable system, allowing for pretty dense computing resources for a workstation. The system comes with absolutely nothing in it that is not explicitly requested in order, a con to some, but a huge pro to me. It also operates very quietly, and its heat production is also reasonable given my configuration (Xeon E5-2620, 32Gb RAM and 2 2050 GPUs) and usage.
Cons: I lost one of the pads at the bottom of the enclosure. Would be nicer if they were fastened with screws rather than glued.
Other Thoughts: I recommend this machine to anyone interested in doing computational work on a desktop (simulations involving simulations of large sets of ordinary and partial differential equations in my case).

Categories > Server Barebones > Intel > Intel P4304BTLSHCNR 4U Pedestal Server Barebone LGA 1155 Intel C204 DDR3

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Great Solid Server Solution.
Pros: Hot Swap design for Sata/Sas drives. Plenty of room for storage/cd/dvd. Solid design Motherboard. Excellent documentation. Excellent software setup CD. Virtually quiet Fans (See Cons).

Excellent Server setup for Centos 6.x / Linux. Home or small office

Using the Intel Remote Management Module AXXRMM4 (purchase separate) you can monitor and receive system problems before they reach critical problems.

3 Year warranty on motherboard
Cons: The P4304BTLSHCNR is slated to be discontinued end of 2014.

System Fan Issue: At default power up, the system fan goes full rpm and very loud noise level . There are a lot of references on the web, but many are confusing. The simple solution is to download this file off the intel support site:
S1200BTL_SUP_EFI_BIOS37_BMC1.14_FRUSDR1.14
Extract the contents onto a USB stick, plug the stick into the front USB slot, boot up the system and the Bios update will take place. Follow the instructions.

Once done the Bios will be updated and the Fan issue will be eliminated.

Only VGA port. Newer Monitors need the DVI type. Purchase Simple DVI card to solve this.

Check compatibility of onboard Sata with OS manufacturer. Purchased separate Raid card (Below) because Centos 6.6 did not have a driver for the Motherboard Sata.

I Give this system 5 eggs even though there is a fan issue.

I have to remove 1 egg due to Newegg not following their IronEgg Price Guarantee. After purchasing the system, I found it on one of the approved competitors site for about $180 less. I submitted a form and was not given the full price difference because the customer support said they would be losing money. That is not my concern. I followed new egg's rules. As a compromise I was offered a $50 coupon, which I agreed upon with no further argument. I have been a good customer of new eggs and this is the first time I used their IronEgg Guarantee. Be careful, you may have to negotiate even though they say "price difference" not "Profit level". Sorry NewEgg.. But people need to understand this.
Other Thoughts: This is my second system build using this platform. Solid system. Upgraded from old Compaq Proliant 1600.

Build:

(1) Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 69W Server Processor BX80637E31230V2
(1) Intel Remote Management Module AXXRMM4
(1) Intel RS25AB080 PCI-Express 2.0 x8 SATA / SAS RAID Controller Card
(4) SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
(2) Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600 Server Memory w/TS Model KVR16E11/8
(1) ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM

The above gives you a solid system with room to expand.

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Moves the data fast..
Pros: Combined with Xeon E3-1270V3 - 16G ram - Samsung SSD(s) this is a small business workhorse. Used Win 8.1 for the server network and it seems to be able to maximize a daily SQL heavy load.
Very easy to configure
Cons: For non rack mount - seemed big

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 I am very pleased
Pros: Very well built
Good Documentation
Good Phone Support ( a simple question answered in minutes)
Cons: Little sketchy on how to use the 2 SATA/SAS controllers, ended up using just one. A lot of this is OS based recognition and I did not spend a lot of time trying to get both to work.
Other Thoughts: Using it with 5 1TB SATA 4 in RAID 10, 32 GB RAM

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Know what you are getting before you purchase
Pros: -Small Chassis means it fits nicely on the shelf.
-Quiet, even with the optional front fan.
-This is a great value for the price.
-The Chassis is well built and sturdy. Heavy and solid!
-I have had this server running for about a year and only restarts for Windows updates. This this is very reliable if you upgrade a few parts.
Cons: -RAID does not work with Server 2012 OR Windows 7 Pro. Like another reviewer, I was directed by SuperMicro to the FTP site for the drivers and it still didn't work. I ended up buying a PCIe RAID controller.
-Power Supply is INADEQUATE for more than 2 HDDs
Other Thoughts: As long as you buy a better power supply and get an external RAID controller you should be fine. i just want to point out that other newer Super Micro Barebones servers have worked with RAID just fine.

Categories > Server Barebones > SuperMicro > SUPERMICRO SYS-5018A-FTN4 1U Rackmount Server Barebone FCBGA 1283 DDR3 1600/1333

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Beastly little machine
Pros: * 1U Form factor installs perfectly in all racks
* Sturdy construction
* Reliable, super micro makes great devices
* Front mounted IO makes it perfect for installation into a rack without extensive accessories like KVMs
* The multiple network ports make it easy to run zones on a UTM if that's what it's used for
* Plenty of space inside to install extra disks
* Management interface
Cons: * Requires DDR3 SODIMM ECC memory which is much rarer than you'd think. Ended up buying 2x Kingston KVR16LSE11 and they worked perfectly. UTM now has more ram than most desktops in the office
* As other reviewers have mentioned it CAN be a little flakey to boot
* Only 1xSATA connection, 1x SATA Power, and 1x MOLEX Power. Require splitters to run more drives and additional short cables
* The drive mounting holes didn't line up with the holes on the bottom of my SSD, not a huge con as as long as it's held in place with a single screw it's fine.
* Raid, even software layer, would have been a nice touch
* Still don't know how the management interface works..
Other Thoughts: *MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT RAM!*

I found that the machine doesn't like to boot when cold or if it doesn't have good ram in it. Letting it sit for a minute and then hitting the RESTART button seems to have a very reliable chance of getting the machine to boot past initialization.

Drive cages are "required" in order to have multiple drives / 3.5s (I think), the cages are not listed in the description unfortunately.

I've used these SuperMicro ATOM machines for sometime as firewalls / UTMS. This one is currently handling a fiber 100mbit symmetrical line at full speed while running snort, squid, and antivirus without breaking too much of a sweat, an SSD is a must in this case.

Would recommend these devices to anyone who's looking for a good device to use as a UTM, has some technical know how (to install and optimize a pfSense like product), and is not interested in spending over 2x as much for a comparable UTM device.

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Nice High End Box
Pros: 2 Slots
Both Slots work with just 1 CPU Installed
Good Overall Value
Good Hot-Swap Drive Bays
Cons: Heavy - It's a big Box
Uses More Power than Single CPU MB
Other Thoughts: Someone complained about the noise; two things. One, you don't have to install both supplies. You can pull one and use the 2nd module as a spare. Second, it's loud because there are 8 fans to cool dual cpus. If you're not using the 2nd CPU, you can disconnect some fans. If you're using lower power cpus or its in a temperature controlled room, you can disconnect a couple of fans to reduce power usage and noise

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Great Small-footprint ESXXi
Pros: Excellent barebones system for an E3-12xx based ESXi server. Relatively quiet with sufficient cooling capacity for small businesses that have no server room – even with 2 3TB WD Reds. IPMI is a wonderful addition with this SuperMicro board.
Cons: Some cable rearrangement is required to fit two drives – nothing that a pair of clippers and extra zip-strips can’t take care of.
