Categories > PS3 Systems > PlayStation > Sony Playstation 3 (CECHE01) 80 GB Game Console Backward Compatible with 1 Dual Shock Controller

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Working yes...refurbished, no.
Pros: The system booted up and is in fact backwards compatible.
Cons: The system I received wasnt refurbished, it is merely a used unit that works. I received a chipped up, deeply scratched all over unit that has large amounts of dirt and greasy substance in every port and hole on the thing. If newegg wants to sell these, they should be upfront about the terrible shape many of the systems are in. Refurbished systems should be in great shape unless otherwise noted.

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 What you've always wanted at a fraction of the cost
Pros: I'm one of those people who griped when Sony took away the backwards compatibility in its PS3. The system was too expensive for me to justify at launch, and by the time it came down to an acceptable level, it was too late. These PS2 backwards compatible systems were selling for $1,000 or so. Ridiculous, but not unexpected given the relative scarcity of the units and the dominant PS2 library.

I'm finally happy to have one thanks to this Newegg sale. My refurbished unit looked great. There were some fine scratches on the memory card covering, but beyond that, the system looked like new. The unit is heavy, solid and easy to set up. The controller came charged, and I was soon enough enjoying Bombastic, the PS2 sequel of Devil Dice on my PS3.

It's not just that this thing plays PS2 games but rather that it offers that along with upscaling and widescreen enhanced modes. This isn't going to alter the existing textures of a PS2 games so that it looks "HD," but the result is significantly better than it would be otherwise.

I have a potato quality unboxing and testing photo album you can check out here: http://imgur.com/a/pqmth. Note the last couple of shots in particular, as you can see the PS3's smoothing filter "erase" the PS2's jaggies away. Everything looks noticeably cleaner, sharper; it's great. Not an upgrade worth $1,000, but definitely at the price you can get it here.

I was also impressed that my system didn't sound like a jet engine as I've read these do. I suspect that's because these people aren't keeping their units in a well ventilated area. I have an open entertainment stand, keeping the system laid out horizontally, and I haven't noticed any overheating or excessive fan noise. That's including having the thing on for nearly two days straight, too, as I upgraded the system to a 320GB HDD and had to endure an excessively long format and typically sluggish PSN speeds when downloading all my games. I'd urge anyone getting this to upgrade the HDD immediately. It's relatively effortless, and you DO NOT want to have to go through the chore of backing everything up and then formatting and setting up the new drive. It's worth it.

I understand that these old PS3 systems had thermal paste issues which caused a lot of the overheating and system deaths. I can only assume this was "fixed" as part of the refurbishing process. I really have no complaints about the unit. It's pretty great.
Cons: The controller unexpectedly arrived fully charged, it's L2 button was stuck. I didn't notice until I finished the first level of Katamari Damacy and couldn't save because the game kept rotating through the planets at will. I opened up the controller and saw that the spring was not set correctly. Not broken, just not in line so that the L2 button could come to a rest. It thankfully took all of three minutes to open up and fix.

The system is still prone to the issues you'd have receiving a new system, like how heavy the system is and how the thing doesn't include an HDMI cable. I had to put my PS3 on the bottom of my suspended glass TV stand because I don't trust how heavy the thing is. Likewise, composite? I know the unit originally came with that cable, but still. The system comes with no paperwork whatsoever, too, and I'm just a bit disappointed by the lack of a manual.

Anyone looking to use this as a Linux box needs to remember that Sony retroactively removed that feature from these systems. My unit came with 4.66 firmware, meaning it was already gone. I'm sure you can jailbreak it, but given how hard these PS2-backwards compatible systems have been to come by, I'd rather not risk it.

Finally, while the PS3 remains region free, unfortunately the PS2 inside the machine is not. No upscaled Otostaz for me. :/ It really stinks that Sony put this needless handcuff on the system, but it's there.

Likewise, this is Sony, so prepare for the potential to have features excised from the device if you update the system on-line. Recently, Sony just made it so that PSX installs don't automatically remove the install file. It's a stupid, needless change, and it's far from the first. Digital games require you do download an install file, then install the game from that; so a 12 GB game requires 24 GB of space to get it on your system before it can clear out that install file. As I said, upgrade that HDD.
Other Thoughts: This is a great time to buy a PS3 (and Xbox 360). Low priced subscription services on both platforms all you to play dozens of games for a fraction of the cost. Games can be had cheaply and enjoyed while you wait for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 libraries to fill out. Beyond that, this particular unit gives you access to the huge PS2 library. While Sony has made efforts to update and re-release a handful of popular PS2 games, what about Gungrave? Klonoa 2? There are oodles of ignored PS2 gems out there, and if you're looking to play them on a HDTV, this is the way to do it.

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 PS2 mode not working
Pros: None.
Cons: *PS2 backward compatability not working
*Very loud if not ventilated (could be because unit is defective).
Other Thoughts: I currently have a PS2 Slim 320GB I bought from Gamestop. Very happy with that unit and saw these 60GB CECHA01 units starting to pop up on Groupon and online auction sites that shall not be named. When I saw them on Newegg, I figured this is a reputable vendor so I took the chance.

I received my unit on a Monday, hooked it up and the unit powers up for the most part works. It plays blu rays and DVDs, and of course PS3 games. Even PS1 games too.

However, after feeding it about half a dozen PS2 game disks, the screen would go black, the console would hang and the controller would shut off. I had to hard power it off with the switch in the back to shut down so I could turn it back on to reboot the unit and eject my PS2 disks.

I actually went out to Youtube and found a three and a half minute video of some guy showing a PS3 CECHA01 playing a PS2 copy of GoW to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid. It is as simple as putting in the disk into the PS3 and the console should show the Playstation 2 logo and play the game.

I bought this unit to replace my Slim model. My boy is already looking for a place to put the Slim next to his other consoles. I wanted this unit for the PS2 hardware backward compatibility specifically.

At this point, my unit is headed back to Newegg for RMA. I asked that they send me a replacement unit.

For what it's worth, I also advised my brother in Boston that these were on sale and he also bought one. I called him to let him know my PS2 mode does not work and just gives a black screen. He called me a day later when he got his unit from Newegg and said that his CECHA01 is doing the same thing. So he also received a dud unit that needs to be RMA'ed.

I am willing to give another unit a chance but if that unit does the same thing, I am done and will just ask for a refund.

I hope Newegg didn't get a bad batch of these and I hope they go back to the outfit that refurbished these and look into their QA procedures. I also hope that Newegg does more than just power it up to verify the unit doesn't work. Because it'll fire up and play movies and PS3/PS1 games no problem. But not PS2. I suspect the Emotion Engine chip inside is dead.

I will post a subsequent review when I have something more to report.

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Terrible Experience
Pros: Arrived promptly
Cons: I've owned the refurbished unit for about a week. I have played a total of less than 20 hours, at most 3 hours at a sitting, and the unit went YLOD.

Worst off, my newly purchased game is stuck inside the unit and I cannot remove it without breaking the warranty (I tried the power off/on eject button trick without any luck).

I now have to return the console and hope that the RMA dept at Newegg will send me back my game.

I wanted this unit in particular to play both ps2 and ps3 games. Due to this experience my best bet is to buy a new ps3 slim and a replacement ps2 laser off an auction site and just repair my old ps2.

Terrible experience. Don't waste time on this junk and buy a brand new ps3 slim for a few bucks more.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Original PS3 (PS3 Fat)
Pros: The original PS3 fat is what people are calling it now is hands down the best gaming unit ever! I stood in line years ago and purchased a 60gig one that came with Talladega Nights bluray. That movie, the original cords and controller is still new in the box in my closet. This one I purchased from new egg serves as a backup. My original is still running with no issues. From a gaming standpoint this is an amazing unit. Sony made a hit as the original units played PlayStation one thru PlayStation 3 games! Wow what a concept. This is the only reason to buy the PS3 so your old library didn't go to the wayside. Playing final fantasy X and chrono trigger one one system is awesome. No need to pull out multi systems, find a memory card and another controller to enjoy. These units, although expensive when new was state of the art. They could play bluray movies, and fully backwards programmable. Probably a headache for Sony so they quickly removed this capability once the PS3 units evolved into the slim versions. Imagine if they kept this capability. They would have sold even more units! I have collected video games and video game systems since Nintendo. I don't have any Xbox systems. Bought my daughter one. Tried it out and they are impressive too. Okay i've went on long enough. If you enjoy playstation one thru PlayStation three games buy this unit! The game selection is massive!
Cons: No cons for the PlayStation 3 fat/chrome trim not silver trim, 60 gig as you can play playstation one thru PlayStation three games.
Other Thoughts: If Sony would have kept the backwards compatibilities for the PlayStation slim version the units would have been bigger hits! That's just my 2 cents. Way to go sony!

Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3 Sony PS3 60GB backward compatible
Pros: Bought for my son so he could play all the old PS2 games I own and now we can race on separate tv's for GT6.
Cons: Keep this in a well ventilated area, because when I had it in my entertainment cabinet the fan was so loud you could barely hear the game (about twice as loud as more recent PS3 models. Also, if you want to transfer your saved games from the PS2, you have to get an adapter that is pretty expensive.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Legit Fat PS3 60GB
Pros: This is a legit old school 60GB "Fat" PS3. I received a model CECHA01, and have confirmed it plays all my old favorite PS2 games.

Console and controller in full working order, all cables included. Well packaged. Worked right out of the box, just like it should. Fast shipping as always, high five for Newegg!
Cons: Some minor scratches on the case, which is no big deal to me really. I wasn't expecting it to look new. But for its age, it looks surprisingly good.

Came with OFW 4.6 unfortunately.
Other Thoughts: I could have bought this somewhere else for a bit cheaper, but with Newegg I can always RMA it if there's an issue.
