Pros: Black ink is sharp and clean.
Cons: As with any ink cartridge, price is excessive, but compared to other retailers, competitive.

Categories > Ink Cartridges (Genuine Brands) > Hewlett-Packard > HP 88XL Black Officejet Ink Cartridge(C9396AN#140)

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 High Quality Ink Cartridges at a Premium Price
Pros: I've been using HP 88XL cartridges on my HP Officeject Pro L7780 ever since I used up the included ink cartridges that came with the printer several years ago. The ink quality seems good. I don't see any noticeable ink bleeding into the fibers of the paper, and the ink dries pretty quickly. I haven't really had any issues with wet ink on paper. It does take a little bit longer for a graphic or image to dry, so if you do press on the image with finger once it has printed a tiny amount will get on to your hand. If you were to print a picture, I would wait about a minute before touching the image.

I have printed on several types of paper. I've used premium 98 bright/24 lb paper, economy 20 bright/96 bright paper, 100% cotton watermarked résumé paper, photo paper, and various letter & résumé envelopes. The ink has looked good on all of them.

I print fairly regularly, so I have gone through a few of these cartridges. I have never had any issues with any of the HP 88XL cartridges that I have used. I probably average about 1-1.5 years of usage out of an XL cartridge. I prefer the XL cartridges, because they are a better value.

I have had a cartridges in use past their expiration date. I have not run into any issues because of expired ink. I think the longest past the expiration I have gone is somewhere between 6-12 months, and documents still printed fine. I probably wouldn't use a cartridge that was years past its expiration date, but based on my experience, so far up to a year expired has not caused me any issues.
Cons: There really is only one con, and that is the price. These cartridges are not cheap, as the price is higher than it really should be.
Other Thoughts: Although you do pay a premium price to have the OEM ink cartridges, I never really wanted to try the various alternatives that are out there. I did a bit of research on the alternatives, and they either seem to be messy or sometimes have created issues. For many, non-OEM seem to work perfectly okay, but I'm perfectly okay with spending a few dollars more to get the OEM to avoid dealing with a potentially messy refill or the chance at getting a shoddy non-OEM.
