Categories > Firewalls/Security Appliances > Cisco Systems, Inc. > CISCO ASA5505-BUN-K9 Cisco ASA 5505 10-User Bundle 10000 Simultaneous Sessions Firewall throughput: Up to 150 Mbps 3DES/AES VPN throughput: Up to 100 Mbps

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 ASA 5505
Pros: Best bang for the buck. Yes, Sonicwall may be easier but come back in a year and tell me how great it is when the subscription runs out and you lose half the functionality. It's small and unobtrusive and is pretty much set and forget. I've been able to walk a non-technical person through setup without much difficulty. Price is very fair for what it is.
Cons: Yes it runs hot. It's an enterprise device and if you don't know what you're doing or don't care to find out you'll be in trouble fast. Hint: Use the wizards they are your friends. Service life can be iffy. I've had units that lasted 5 years and the same exact device that died in 1 year. Suggest not locating in a hot room. A fan is not a bad idea. I hate Cisco's Smartnet agreements. It's stupid that you can't get support or firmware updates without paying upwards of $150 a year or more per device.
Other Thoughts: It's a good device and so common in small offices these days that it's almost a given. Somebody's always selling them and if they were as bad as some make them out to be they wouldn't still be selling this exact model for the past 7 years! It's an enterprise device not some $50 Best Buy throwaway toy. It's just a firewall, however, so if you get virus infections and malware don't blame the device blame your computing habits and lack of security updates. No device will protect a user from themselves if they're determined enough. If you want web filtering buy a sonicwall and pay their subscription fees. I'd wager you'd still get infected if you had bad Internet habits. By the way if you want to set up a websense filter this thing will allow you to use it, all ASA's support it but you have to run the filtering software on another pc that's on all the time. Suggest you buy the smartnet agreement through a cisco VAR (there are VARS that will write one for a brand new one even if not bought through them) At least you'll get a 1 year warranty and a year of firmware (IOS) updates.

Categories > Firewalls/Security Appliances > SONICWALL > SonicWALL TZ 105 Network Security Appliance

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 IT'S AN UPGRADE DEVICE
Pros: This is a great choice to buy if you have an existing SonicWALL in your business that has either failed, or just needs to be replaced. It's a very low cost solution to upgrading the older equipment, while keeping all of the licenses (anti-virus and vpn licenses) that you purchased for the old router.
Cons: Cannot be registered on its own as a new product with mysonicwall.com. It'll be a real bummer if you buy it and you don't have an old sonicwall to replace with this one.
Other Thoughts: For my clients this is a great solution, some have older units that desperately need to be replaced. Saving about $50-$100 per unit adds up real fast. One client has over 30 older units, so that adds up to a few thousand $$$ in savings.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Good solid firewall with advanced features
Pros: This is a good solid firewall with excellent throughput and features. I have them installed in 40-60 employee offices, and they are providing excellent throughput.

I needed to configure them to provide WAN access to internal servers (remote desktop, ssh, ftp, and other services), and these firewalls provide a nice easy way to setup that access.

One thing I really like is that you first setup your public and private (NAT'd) addresses using "Address Management", then you go to Port Forwarding to forward inbound traffic to the appropriate internal server address and port. When doing so, it will create the Access Control List (ACL) rule for you! Very sweet.

You can also limit access to a set of inbound IP addresses or ranges. Again, very straightforward.

This is a well thought out product, and I recommend it for small business use.
Cons: The logging features are fairly complicated, if you want to log sessions and forward reports to an email address.

Pros: Good sturdy device
Cons: Cisco wont provide updates for the device unless you have a Service contact. They say to contact newegg if you need firmware..... which makes no sense. newegg has no idea what your talking about if you call in.
Other Thoughts: Ill never buy cisco again after the poor customer service i received.

Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3 Product good but!
Pros: Product is easy to setup and works well.
Cons: The advertising on this product is very misleading. 50 VPN connections and 25 SSL VPN connections. I wanted to use the SSL VPN but soon found out the device is only licensed for 2 SSL VPN users. You must purchase severalty a 5 or 25 user license for more remote connections. Not really happy about this.

Categories > Firewalls/Security Appliances > Netgear Inc. > NETGEAR FVS318N-100NAS ProSafe Wireless-N 8-port Gigabit VPN Firewall 6000 Simultaneous Sessions 95 Mbps

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Great Wireless-N VPN Firewall
Pros: The price/performance on this firewall is excellent. Extremely well built with metal case and included wall mount slots on the bottom. Unit does not run hot at all.

Throughput of over 95Mbps with SPI. 1000BaseT (GigE) everywhere! Multiple options for VPN clients (i.e., IPsec, L2TP, SSL, etc.). Support for multiple VLAN's (up to 64) for segregating LAN traffic. Standard Netgear ProSafe lifetime warranty. This is a more than worthy replacement for the old FVS318G product.
Cons: SSL-VPN looks better on paper than it ends up being in real life. Nowadays with Shrew Soft, IPsec is just as fast and easy.

Not a "con" per se, but since the 4.3.0-19 firmware update the WAN port takes forever to go active after a reboot. From power up to passing traffic easily takes 7 - 10 minutes, so be advised.
Other Thoughts: Do I need to say update the firmware right out of the box? Apparently I do, as many reviewers below have given bad marks for old, outdated 2.x.x & 3.x.x firmware.

Be advised, Netgear Tech Support STRONGLY recommends doing a factory reset both before AND after upgrading to new firmware. Further, NEVER upgrade over a wireless link. IMHO, some of the complainers either didn't reset before and after or didn't correctly upgrade their firmware.

Since the 4.x.x platform has been released most of the previous complaints and issues have been addressed and fixed. This unit is rock solid on 4.3.0-19 firmware. If a slightly slower boot time is all it takes to make this unit stable I'm happy to wait.

I have several of these deployed at various client sites with no complaints, no problems, no issues!

You do need to have a firm grasp of IP routing and networking to get all the VLAN options and features enabled successfully. I like the ability to have a separate VLAN for Guest WiFi access that technically never leaves the box (per se). True, isolated guest WiFi access.

I've used LOTS of wireless firewalls from various manufacturers such as Linksys/Cisco & SonicWALL for over 15 years. This is rapidly becoming my favorite wireless VPN firewall. Fast & flexible!

Categories > Firewalls/Security Appliances > ZyXEL > ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 Internet Security Firewall with Dual-WAN, 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 5 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, and 3G WAN Support

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Freaking awesome!
Pros: EXTREME CUSTOMIZATION!! I have configured certain protocols or websites to route through one WAN connection or the other, block XBOX Live or Playstation Network during specific times, etc. etc. etc. If you have a need for protocol or IP routing requirements this is the device to have. For the price, the features cannot be beaten. Logging and capture features are epic, I've identified bots hitting my networks every 2-3 hours along with malicious attacks with ease. I've also used the frame/packet capture feature to identify faulty and malfunctioning equipment on my network causing congestion and other issues. All-in-all, the best networking device purchase I've made.
Cons: Learning curve to set up, it's definitely not your average Netgear or Linksys box. My advice, set up all your IP addresses, services, and groups under "Objects" before you even go into setting up NAT/Firewall or policy routing. Once you configure all the "Objects" you need setting up new rules, policies, etc. is very easy and straight forward.
Other Thoughts: This firewall has by far improved my networks performance as well as the ability to customize connections and routing policies. With this device I've been able to

For those worried about Xbox/PSN connections: You do HAVE to set up a firewall rule to allow the Xbox Live and PSN ports to your devices. This is a true FIREWALL, not a Linksys or Netgear "firewall" that auto-allows symmetrical connections/traffic.

Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3 Not Impressed
Pros: Its inexpensive for what it is.
Cons: I had my cousin purchase this for his small business specifically for the SSL VPN functionality. i failed to read the fine print evidently it only support 1 concurrent SSL VPN connection? what exactly is the point of that? for our use it makes it slightly better than any cheap firewall on the market.

The admin console is almost completely useless; its worse than a radware load balancer gui as a comparison and doesn't really follow any convention that's recognizable from other networking devices i have had experience with. Poorly layed out and difficult to navigate.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Great router.
Pros: Great router for small + medium sized businesses.
Highly configurable to handle any scenario.
Very reliable.
Nice add-on features/services for web monitoring/filtering, IDS/IPS, etc.
Multitude of VPN capabilities including smartphone VPN client apps.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for, it's worth spending more for business class equipment for use in a business environment over consumer/home equipment.
