Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 software issues
Pros: fast to scan, good text recognition
Cons: Modifies Windows registry, causes operational problems, modification is detected as virus by Symantec, causes significant issues.
Other Thoughts: No one ever answers phones at PenPower, no customer support from manufacturer. I can not recommend this product to anyone.

Categories > Specialized Scanners > Plustek > Plustek OpticFilm 8100 35mm Film and Slide Scanner with LaserSoft SilverFast SE Plus 8 Software

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Very good quality
Pros: Very good quality. Pretty good price.
Cons: This scanner has many, many controls if you are not inclined to use them get a scanner that is more automatic.
Other Thoughts: No IR dust reduction. $100 less than the next model up.
Perfect for B&W negatives than cannot benefit from IR dust reduction.

Be aware that if you want to do Kodachrome with any scanner, you really need a Kodachrome calibration slide, which is extra.

Categories > Specialized Scanners > Adesso > Adesso EZScan 310 EZScan 310 CIS Photo 1200 dpi Portable Handheld Scanner

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Almost 5-Stars
Pros: Instrument works great
Versatile, Durable
Scans faster than expected, especially B&W
Yes, you should buy it (Mac, Linux, PC)
Sufficient for Macintosh use.
Cons: Supplied software isn't Macintosh compatible - minor consideration.
USB link between scanner and Macintosh is limited to power (4.5vdc) for the unit (pins 1 & 4), and, as far as I can tell, data transfer via usb is not possible for Mac users. This is a minor issue, but worth noting.
Other Thoughts: The wireless function is a built in wireless router (do not confuse with Bluetooth)
Be mindful that the built in wireless router will time out and shut down after a few minutes. So grab your scans sooner than the timeout.
Macintosh compatibility/support is:
--- USB power (pins 1 & 4) to supply power to unit
--- The micro USB card (user supplied) is Mac and Linux compatible (via adapter/card reader)
--- Go wireless (network preferences to the scanner) and use any FTP client (ie. Fetch, Yummy FTP, Transmit, Forklift, CyberDuck, Viper FTP Lite, etc) and FTP in using ftp:10.10.1.1 then you can retrieve the images captured by the scanner.
--- Linux users, either move the micro usb card back and forth (scanner to Linux box), or just FTP in to retrieve your files (using your favorite FTP client).
The ftp password is supplied in the user manual.
Recommendation to OEM: Apple Computer will assist you in developing a Mac client for the scanner, then you get 5 stars instead of 4.49 stars.

Categories > Specialized Scanners > XEROX > XEROX Travel Scanner 150 (XTravel-Scan150) Mobile Scanner

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Good Scanner for Road Warriors
Pros: 600 dpi res. Lightweight but rugged. Handy carry case. Relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Bloatware on disc - the drivers & apps are outdated so best to just toss it after copying the manual to your hard drive. The doc feeder is not perfect. Xerox includes a couple holders to scan small, thin material like thermal paper receipts. This was a bit of a disappointment since my main intention for buying was cleaning up my expense reports. But the holders work ok and it's still better than mailing in receipts.
Other Thoughts: Download the latest drivers and the One Touch app from the Xerox website. Load the drivers, connect the device when prompted, then run the One Touch installer. Configuring one touch was simple by selecting the "auto document" mode. If you need a pdx converter I suggest finding a free one or ponying up for acrobat.

Getting the hang of the doc feeder is pretty quick. As mentioned previously, it's not perfect, so a little dexterity is needed. Overall, money well spent - so far.

Categories > Specialized Scanners > Fujitsu > Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 1200 dpi USB Simplex Contactless Scanner

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Excellent scanner for books
Pros: The Fujitsu scansnap handles books extremely well. I have been digitizing my collection of nearly 100 sheet music books, and for that purpose, it has been perfect. The pages come out very clear and accurate, and once a workflow is in place, the scanning process is fairly quick. I use a piece of glass to hold the books down, which reduces the curve of the pages. Two pages can be scanned in at a time, which is something you don't get with a flatbed scanner. The scanner also comes with Adobe Acrobat which is a great piece of software for managing and optimizing PDFs.
Cons: Fairly expensive scanner. Pages with curves with result in sub-par scans. Material that is black and white works very well, but if the pages have artwork or a dark background, the page detection will be inaccurate, and manual adjustments will have to be made. Manually adjusting the page dimensions can be fairly time consuming.
Other Thoughts: The aren't very many scanners in the market for handling books. This scanner was the only affordable one I found for personal use, and for my needs, it has been perfect. I hope in the future there will be more options available for scanning books.
