Categories > SCSI / SAS / InfiniBand Cables > SNT > SNT Model SNT-CB29SS27P 25" 29pin SAS to 2 x 7pin SATA w/ 4pin Molex Power Cable

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 This cable does not provide correct voltage
Pros: This cable will connect to a SAS drive and give you a SATA connection. It will also power the drive with a regular molex connection from your desktop computer.
Cons: What people overlook is that the controller for a SATA drive is 5v and a SAS controller is 7v. This is why servers can control both types of drives and desktops cannot control SAS drives even with this cable.
Other Thoughts: You can use this cable successfully "IF" you are connecting it to a SAS\SATA controller card. You can find 2 - 3 year old LSI or Perc cards for cheap that connect to your PCie slots, boom you are off to the races with your SAS drives in the RAID config of your choice.

We just needed some clarification on how these cables should be used.

Categories > SCSI / SAS / InfiniBand Cables > STARTECH > StarTech Model SAS729PW18 18" SAS 29 Pin to SATA Cable with LP4 Power

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Works for what it's meant for
Pros: First and foremost, this cable it made to connect a SAS drive to a SAS/RAID controller with an on-board SATA connector, NOT to connect a SAS drive to a standard SATA connection on, say, a standard desktop SATA controller. It will not work.

When use for it's intended purpose, it works. It could be explained a little better, hence the four egg rating, not five.
Cons: None outside of potentially explaining what the adapter is meant for a bit more clearly.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Just what I needed
Pros: Purchased this to hook up a HP External LTO5 Tape Drive. The vendor (Not NewEgg) sent us a box with just the drive, no cables or anything (the box is intended to replace an existing drive with a new unit, not a new purchase). Cable worked great.
Cons: None. It only has one purpose and it fulfills that purpose.

Categories > SCSI / SAS / InfiniBand Cables > Tripp Lite > Tripp Lite Model S502-20N 16" - 20" Internal SAS Cable

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 Poor QC?
Pros: Works fine. Fairly easy to bundle and organize the cables.
Cons: A bit expensive, but I guess it's a bit of a niche item, and it's certainly an improvement over costly SCSI cables. I bought two of these. One of them looks like it had been passed through a woodchipper. The packaging it came in was undamaged so it appears to have left the factory in this condition, in such a way I doubt Newegg staff would have been able to notice. The damaged part only had one operable SATA connector, but was otherwise sound, no shorts or exposed wires.
Other Thoughts: I only needed to connect 5 devices at the time, so I didn't bother returning the damaged part to Newegg or the manufacturer (I'm sure one of them would have replaced it). Now that I want to grow the array, I'll have to order another cable. Oops.
Manufacturer Response:All Tripp Lite cables come with a lifetime warranty. Please contact Tripp Lite’s Chicago-based Tech Support Team at 773-869-1234 and they will be happy to provide a replacement for your defective cable.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Great Adapter
Pros: Able to use a SAS drive without a backplane.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Great for trouble shooting drives without a backplane. For those having problems SATA doesn't read SAS. You need SAS controller to read SAS HD's.

Categories > SCSI / SAS / InfiniBand Cables > STARTECH > StarTech Model SAS729PW18 18" SAS 29 Pin to SATA Cable with LP4 Power

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 You need a SAS controller!!!
Pros: It works and has a small connector body allowing the leads to clear the back plate without overly stressing the cables or connectors.
Cons: Could use longer cables for the power connection.
Other Thoughts: Please remember that the controllers on most motherboards will not control a SAS drive. You need a SAS controller in order to use these cables. You can use these cables on SATA drives with SATA controllers. They are much sturdier then the SATA power and signal cables. I use these on all of my SATA drives for that reason.

Categories > SCSI / SAS / InfiniBand Cables > SNT > SNT Model SNT-CB29SS27P 25" 29pin SAS to 2 x 7pin SATA w/ 4pin Molex Power Cable

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Stear clear until Newegg sorts things out
Pros: Price
Fast Shipping
Cons: Does not work
Other Thoughts: The description and the manifacturer's website clearly indicate this cable is supposed to have two molex connectors. The cable I received only had one (a cable with only one molex does not even exist in the manifacturer's portfolio, so I wonder how on earth Newegg managed to send one). The effect of receiving a product short on molex connectors is that your SAS HDD is not getting enough juice to spin up.
This was purchased for work to test some misbehaving SAS drives from the blade servers we're running. Since female to two male MOLEX connectors are nigh impossible to find this cable is going in the bin and I have an angry IT manager on my case. So if you end up needing a cable like this, make sure you are getting one with two molex connectors or you'll be sad.
