Categories > Flatbed Scanners > Canon USA > Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F 3297B002 9600 x 9600dpi 48bit USB Interface Flatbed Scanner

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Does NOT require separate power supply
Pros: Great scanner. See "Other Thoughts".
Cons: See "Other Thoughts".
Other Thoughts: One of the images for this scanner shows the scanner, box, USB cable, and what is incorrectly labeled as a power adapter. That is NOT a power adapter, it is the attachment for scanning film negatives. This scanner is powered by the single USB cable only. I almost didn't buy this scanner because I thought it had a separate power adapter!

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 CanoScan LiDE210 in Debian 7
Pros: Dead simple to use this device in Debian. Basically just plug it in and add your user account to the 'scanner' group. (Packages required: libsane, sane-utils)
Cons: no cons

Categories > Flatbed Scanners > Epson America > EPSON Perfection Series Perfection V600 Film & Photo Flatbed Color Scanner

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Excellent purchase
Pros: Excellent scan quality from negatives.

Scanner software splits and rotates scans and automatically numbers multi-image scans.

Dust reduction, color correction and digital ICE work well

Reasonably speedy scans
Cons: Scanning large format negatives is somewhat cumbersome - I can fit three on at a time.
Other Thoughts: I'm in the process of scanning several thousand old photos and negatives and decided to upgrade from my old trusty xerox to hopefully get better quality and increase my workflow efficiency. The V600 has allowed me to do all this. The quality of scans of my 35mm negatives is impressive, and the scanner software allows me to automatically split, rotate and name photos with accuracy; speeding up my scanning chores. Overall I'm very happy with the V600.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 excellent quality
Pros: Works without any effort with my mac. The available resolutions have been great for scanning family pics (high) and travel receipts (low). Relying on USB power, something I didn't care about when I bought it, turned out to be a nice feature, making work with my laptop that much easier.
Cons: After downloading drivers for windows, I still got errors. Thankfully, I can just switch over to using my mac to get work done.

Categories > Flatbed Scanners > Plustek > Plustek OpticBook A300 Large Format Flatbed Book Scanner (271-BBM21-C)

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Slow, Overpriced, and Unreliable
Pros: This scanner, like the "Opticbook 3600 Plus" I owned before it, functioned for 13 months, just long enough for the one-year warranty to expire. Then the CIS module (i.e., the light source) failed.
Cons: I had heard Plustek's customer service is poor and my personal experience confirmed this. First, a Plustek representative attempted to charge me $400 to replace the scanner light source (a component that costs less than $200). When I requested the name of the third-party manufacturer of the light source so that I could order it directly, the Plustek representative rebuffed me. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was informed that the manager was too busy to speak with me. So I threw the Plustek OpticBook A300 in the garbage and opted for a smarter, affordable book scanning solution.
Other Thoughts: I advise everyone reading this review not to make my mistake: do not waste your time or money on this or other unreliable, overpriced Plustek scanners.

I have since assembled a DIY book scanner based on Daniel Reetz's Open Hardware specifications. The DIY book scanner far, far outperforms the Plustek Opticbook A300 and does so for a small fraction of A300's price. Google it!
Manufacturer Response:Sorry you had problems with your A300 and our support group. We have thousands of these scanner being used in commercial environments worldwide. But that said, this is a mechanical device and any sometimes components fail.

If you still have the scanner and would like it repaired, please send me an email at markdruziak >at< plustek [dot] com. We can work something out.

Categories > Flatbed Scanners > Epson America > EPSON Perfection Series Perfection V33 4800 dpi 48bit Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Interface Flatbed Color Scanner

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 Horrible Scanner
Pros: It scans.
Cons: After a month developed grey spots on the inside of the scanner glass. I wouldn't even give this 1 star if I could.
Other Thoughts: I guess you get what you pay for, in this case a manufacturer defect that isn't covered by their warranty. Never going to purchase Epson again.

Categories > Flatbed Scanners > Canon USA > Canon CanoScan LiDE110 2400 x 4800dpi 48bit USB Interface Flatbed Scanner

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Overall a FINE Scanner!
Pros: I've read reviews stating that the scanner is slow but my guess is that the individual should take a look at the PC they are running. I purchased this scanner for my mother a year ago for it's simplicity. My more expensive "high quality" scanner wouldn't work with Windows 8 so I "borrowed" it back for about 3 months to store old documents. It's very fast for a USB powered scanner (and even an AC powered scanner). Image quality is a tad above average and exceeds all other's I've tried in this price range. Great for archiving documents.
Cons: Not a great photo scanner if that is your primary purpose. If you are planning on scanning the family photo album dig a little deeper in the piggy bank. Occasional photos are fine and it does a good job for emailing pics or internet images.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Happy with Price and Performance
Pros: Quick and accurate image scanning. Colors look good to me.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Wasn't able to scan right out of the box. Found there was a physical switch that had to be thrown in order to allow the scanner to function. I assume this must protect some moving part during shipment? I don't recall having to do this with other scanners I've owned. A slight delay in getting this up and working.

Categories > Flatbed Scanners > Epson America > EPSON Perfection Series Perfection V600 Film & Photo Flatbed Color Scanner

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 WOW
Pros: the best I have seen for negative film scans. on old medium format (folding camera and Brownie, not pro) negatives of family photos, the image is better than the old prints I have
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: I have lots of negatives of family photos from the 1930'-1960's. the original prints are not always in the best of shape, and I want to make copies for other family members. since I am not motivated to set up a dark room again and make prints, I have been trying my old scanner (about 1/6 the resolution) and then a combo digital camera to dupe. neither did negatives well. I am just overwhelmed on well this scanner handles BW negatives from junky old camers

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Great speed and value
Pros: I love this thing. Scans fast, clear and crisp.
Cons: Cover is not heavy enough to press anything flat if you need to scan that sort of thing. I do from time to time, but put a book on the top.
Other Thoughts: Cover feels very delicate. I just have to handle it like a piece of equipment and be gentle. Not a con, though. Picked it up when they had a Christmas sale and it was well discounted. I would have gone with a cheaper version otherwise.
