A strong durable base, but wont last.
- Pros: This base is made of three very durable pieces of metal. They were not kidding about being cast iron - it feels like your mom's frying pan. Same texture too. It is very heavy and strong feeling, and, well maintained, it could clearly last a long time.
- Cons: The design of this base is poor. The base works because a long threaded screw, about a half an inch thick, runs from the top part (under the tabletop) to the four legs at the bottom, through a 3" cast iron tube. The threaded screw is tightened at the base.
Anyone who has used this kind of table knows that if you twist the tabletop counterclockwise, you can exert enough pressure on the tightened screw that it gets loose, and the table gets wobbly. Then you have to re-tighten, and that is annoying.
So, of course, don't do that - but over the years, this will happen and you will have to retighten it, or be wondering if it needs to be retightened. Is that worth not paying the extra 100 dollars for the more expensive table bases? probably, but it's still annoying. And if that long bolt gets threaded, the table is dead.
- Other Thoughts: For 110 dollars, this is a good deal. Take care of it, and it is a reasonable investment. Who wants to pay 1000 dollars for a table (thast how much the alternatives cost) anyway? It will be annoying when that screw gets loose, but it's not the end of the world.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION HINT: put a wad of paper between the square screw head and the table top when you attach the base to the table top. This will make it easier to re-tighten the base later, when it gets loose. You'll thank me in three years.
