Categories > Coffee Grinders > DeLonghi > DeLonghi KG79 Black Coffee Grinder

Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3 First one failed. Replacement seems fine.
Pros: I bought this unit to replace a 5-year old Cuisinart DBM-8, which had failed. The DeLonghi is quieter (not that important to me) and although there is an issue with static electricity, it is not nearly as severe as it was with the Cuisinart. So far, I am happy with the quality of the grinding.
Cons: The first unit that arrived did not work at all. The blue light on the on/off switch lit up, but nothing else happened - the machine was totally silent. I had to return it for a replacement. *See the hint below.
Other Thoughts: *HINT - If your unit fails and it is still under warranty, DO NOT return it to NewEgg. Go directly through the manufacturer. DeLonghi requires that you send back the electrical cord only - a lot less expensive than sending back the entire grinder (as NewEgg requires).

Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1Rating + 1 A great dissapointment
Pros: I so wanted to like this machine - a significant upgrade from my Cuisinart blade grinder. The DeLonghi looks so much better, so well put together...
Cons: Unfortunately, it does not grind even close to fine enough for espresso and the coffee tastes foul. I am switching back to the Cuisinart that does a much better job and only cost me $10!

Categories > Coffee Grinders > Cuisinart > Cuisinart DBM-8 Stainless Steel Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 Died after 5 years
Pros: It did a fairly decent job for a while. Also, I appreciated some of the parts being dishwasher-safe (not all grinders can make that claim).
Cons: After 5 years, the bar wouldn't stay down by itself. I had to hold it down and guess how much coffee was being ground. I called Cuisinart, and they told me I couldn't service it myself, the unit was shot and that they hadn't received similar complaints (I don't believe that). As mentioned by others, the static electricity was annoying, with the coffee grounds flying all over the counter and onto my clothing. Also, very difficult to clean - tried knives, Q-tips, etc., but nothing worked very well.
Other Thoughts: I think I will buy another brand - possibly a DeLonghi (which also has dishwasher-safe parts).

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4
Pros: Works as advertised. Purchased in Nov. 2009, starting using it in early 2012 - still working well. Removable grinder is convenient for cleaning.
Cons: Ample pressure is required on top to start grinding; should be a little easier.

Categories > Coffee Grinders > Cuisinart > Cuisinart DBM-8FR Stainless Steel Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Very happy
Pros: Number of cups selector, bin capacity, closed hopper
Cons: Noise (but not unexpected from burr mill)
Other Thoughts: My 15+ year old grinder was falling apart and I picked this up based on the fairly positive reviews. I'm very happy with it so far. The design of the output hopper is much better than my previous grinder - much lest grounds to clean up after. I really like the ability to select the number of cups to grind (I tested, and for a medium grind it is very close to the amount I would use).

Categories > Coffee Grinders > Cuisinart > Cuisinart DCG-12BC Stainless Steel Grind Central Coffee Grinder

Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4Rating + 4 Grinds coffee well.
Pros: Grinds coffee. That's it's job.

We have had three of these coffee grinders over ten years. We've only had two real problems with them all this time. First, I managed to burn out a motor on one of them by overfilling the bowl with beans. The other one is that the blades cannot easily be sharpened and dull blades heat the coffee grounds.

Two of our grinders have a tall bowl and a smaller rim in the lid. This makes it easier to overfill the bowl and burn out the motor. The one that I like better has a smaller grind bowl and a larger inside rim, giving the beans some room while grinding and less of a chance of burn-out.

All in all, we really like this grinder and will only change to a different grinder if we can find one that grinds to a desired size and isn't expensive. Since that probably will never happen, we're going to use these grinders forever.
Cons: There is no way to grind the coffee to a consistent size. I listen for the motor to spin to a certain pitch, and watch the grounds as they spin, to determine when the coffee has finished being ground. I stop when the grinds rise and fall in place around the edge -- I like the grounds to be fine. Unfortunately, the grounds under the blades are always finely ground but slightly overheated, but the grounds above the blades are always just a little larger than I prefer. If you like big grounds, i.e., for a french press, or medium-sized grounds, i.e., for a conventional coffee maker, you won't have this problem. If you like tiny grounds or powder, this gets close, but won't get you espresso grounds or Turkish coffee powder.

Oh yes, it is noisy, but all of these grinders are. It's higher-pitched than the grinders you'll find in supermarkets but otherwise about the same amount of noise.
Other Thoughts: We've had a few other coffee grinders besides this one, too. None of them are as durable or attractive as this one, and this one has the best motor by far. As I wrote, we're going to continue to buy and use this model grinder until Cuisinart stops making them.

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 MOTOR RESOLVE
Pros: Has lasted me ~4-yrs, performs well for price
Cons: None for the money!
Other Thoughts: As an FYI, I have had a similar model for 4-yrs, and when I first got mine, which used to be model CCM-16, I tried to grind a pound of beans, and after ~3 hoppers full, the motor would not come on.

I later realized it is not made to do so much in succession, and the motor has a thermal cutoff to keep it from burning out, a good thing.

If it stops working, let it sit several hours and try it again before proclaiming it is broken.

I now grind 2 hoppers, wait awhile and grind more, and it as worked perfectly since.
