Categories > Laptop Add-on Cards > STARTECH > StarTech ECUSB3S22 USB ExpressCard 2 x USB 3.0

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 Not so great
Pros: It was delivered in a reasonable amount of time
Cons: The drivers on the CD where a joke. The drivers from the web site where no better. I tried a different driver for product using the same chip set and they worked a little.
I can install the hardware and restart my computer and all is good. I plug a USB device into the port and it works. If I try to access the USB drive for any length of time the port fails and the only way to get it back is to restart my computer. When it fails the computer starts to run very slow. Really being a pain..
Other Thoughts: It would be nice if someone who had any ideas would let me know....
Manufacturer Response:Hello Michael,

We apologize for the issues you have experienced with our ECUSB3S22 adapter, and we would like to offer some assistance.

First, You may want to ensure that the latest drivers have been installed correctly. As you have already mentioned, the latest drivers for this card can be found on our website, at www.startech.com/ECUSB3S22#dnlds. We also have installation instructions available in our Frequently Asked Questions section, which is found here: http://www.startech.com/faq/renesas_usb_3_install_windows_v78#ECUSB3S22.

There are a few tests you can try to help narrow down the cause of this issue, as it may not be driver related.

1. Does the port become non responsive when using USB devices other that the initial USB drive?
2. This model of card comes with an optional USB power cable, to provide extra power to the card if being used with external USB hard drive enclosures. If you have not already, please try using this cable to see if it makes a difference.
3. Can you test the card in another laptop with an ExpressCard slot? It would be best if it is a different model, if possible. If there is a similar issue on another computer then we know it is specific to the card itself.
4. Test the laptop with other ExpressCards if possible, and see if you have similar issues.

We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support. Should you require any further assistance, please contact us and reference case number 303-199617.

Thank You,

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 StarTech PCMCIA USB card
Pros: Worked perfectly on my Compaq Presario M2000.
No drivers needed.
Cons: Extends out about 1 inch, but was expected
Other Thoughts: Was going to take apart my laptop to repair a bad USB port, but had a PCMCIA port available, so my aging laptop now has 2 more functional USB ports...worth 20 bucks

Categories > Laptop Add-on Cards > STARTECH > StarTech ECUSB3S11 USB ExpressCard 1 x USB 3.0

Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3 Does the job with inconveniences
Pros: USB 3.0 speed port that supports high power draw devices.
Easy setup.
Cons: 1) USB port is way too thin and tight.
2) Pops out of the slot because of 1)
3) Requires an external power source to run.
4) No USB Super Speed.
Other Thoughts: I bought this to make use of the USB 3.0 speed for my new External HDD,

The drivers installed fine. I didn't get recognition of my External HDD at first, then I plugged in the external power USB, and then it functioned at a maximum transfer speed of 60MB/s or 400mbps for 1.4TB of data transfer. Thus, if you're looking for SuperSpeed, you're not going to get it. My guess is because ExpressCard itse'f won't go beyond 66MB/s on its bus transfer, so you're going to be restricted to this level of data transfer as well.

The main gripe is actually the USB port itself is narrow enough to grip and clamp on to your cable. Good thing for a robusts connection where you aren't fiddling with it to see if the pins are contacting. Bad thing is that you'll yank the ExpressCard itself when you want to pull the cable out.

The other is that it will only function with an external USB power source. Unless you got lower power devices like USB sticks (Haven't tested these), you're always going to need another USB port dedicated to the port. So essentially you are not expanding your number ports, but converting 1 to USB 3.0. Liveable, but not optimal for an "expansion card." If you are using an external USB charger (mobile phone chargers), then you'll have +1 port, while requiring 2 AC plugs, and an extension USB cable. I'd better suggest using the 2 port USB 3.0 by Startech that sticks out of the ExpressCard if you want to expand even +1 (+2 if you use 2 AC plugs).

Overall, it does the job, but I'll still be looking for a good USB 3.0 ExpressCard.
Manufacturer Response:Hello John,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our ECUSB3S11, and we are sorry to hear it did not quite meet your expectations. We would like to offer some assistance.

Regarding the port tightness concern, this is not something that we have typically seen with this card. It’s possible that the USB chassis is faulty. We would be more than happy to send you a replacement card that should not have this defect.

You are correct regarding the amount of power that is supplied via ExpressCard. This port does not supply much bus power, meaning auxiliary power provided via the USB port, using the cable we provide, is required for higher powered devices. This is almost always the case for external hard drives. Devices such as USB flash drives should be fine without it, as you have noted.

It’s also conceivable that your computer has an older generation of ExpressCard (Gen 1.0). Gen 1.0 ExpressCard enabled computers support a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbps, while Gen 2.0 ExpressCards support up to 5 Gbps. The ECUSB3S11 should support speeds of up to 5gbps, but will only perform as fast as the slowest variable.

If you would like to have your card replaced due to the USB port, or if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Make sure to reference case # 303-187718 when doing so.

Thanks,

Categories > Laptop Add-on Cards > STARTECH > StarTech ECUSB3S11 USB ExpressCard 1 x USB 3.0

Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 works like a charm
Pros: usb 3.0. I get speeds upwards of 80mb/s second. works without driver update. plug and play.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: the individual complaining of not enough power must understand the power output of an express card is lower as the card itself uses more power and has less to spare for the usb port. for those of you concerned about that the card comes with a USB cable that can plug into another USB port and can then be connected through the little circle plug on the card. this increases the power output for larger USB 3.0 devices.

Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3Rating + 3 ok
Pros: Adds a USB 3 port to my computer.
Cons: Doesn't have enough power to run a slim USB optical drive to read a disk, certainly won't have enough to burn a disk. Being used in a Dell Latitude E4200 with CentOS 7 and 5gb of RAM.

Categories > Laptop Add-on Cards > STARTECH > StarTech ECUSB3S2 2 Port ExpressCard SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter - Retail

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 Fair useless
Pros: - Two ports
Cons: - Does not include necessary USB 2.0 cable to supply power; card really doesn't work without it
- Speeds are nowhere near USB 3.0; sometimes even less that 2.0
- Exterior ports are raised so high it covered some of the laptops port
Other Thoughts: Since it doesn't include a necessary component, this card barely works. I wish I'd listened to the other reviews and not bought this.

Categories > Laptop Add-on Cards > STARTECH > StarTech ECESATA254F 2 Port Flush Mount ExpressCard 54mm eSATA II Controller Adapter Card

Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2Rating + 2 Not sure about this one
Pros: goes into the slot of my machine. Does add a usb port.
Cons: My experience may not be the same as yours...
1. The device does not "click" into the port - so it pulls back out easily while attached to the usb connector, so I have to be careful. (Lenovo T410)
2. I only have 1 USB3.0 device - a pioneer bdr-xd05b bluray burner - and it won't work with this card. Maybe it needs too much power - but even with the extra USB jumper plugged into the card, and the second usb cable of the drive plugged into my computer - it doesn't work. I have plugged usb2.0 devices into this card, and they operate OK, so I'm not ready to blame this card for the failure to run ALL usb 3.0 devices yet...
Other Thoughts: Like I said, your results may vary. I bought it specifically for running this bluray burner - which it doesn't cooperate with...
