3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: When I made my original build over a year ago this was the RAM I chose as it was designed for P55 platforms. It worked amazing for the first year, but as all things with PC's go a year later it was time for an upgrade.

I was ecstatic to see that Newegg was still carrying the RAM I had bought over a year ago and an upgrade from 4 to 8 gigs was only going to cost me 30 bucks.

but... see cons

Cons: With the configuration of my CPU heat sink, the ram wasn’t going to fit. So I had to pry off my heatsink and rotate it. Once I was finally able to get the RAM to fit, and everything else was installed it was time for a boot.

Nothing. No BIOS boot. Nothing.

I pulled out the 2 new sticks and booted off just the old sticks it worked just fine.

When i tried to boot with just the new sticks again..

Nothing. No BIOS. Nothing. DOA.

Other Thoughts: I've owned the RAM for over a year and it has exceeded my expectations. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on newegg with 2 builds and upgrades.

I'm stationed in South Korea and it takes nearly 2 weeks for stuff to get out here. So when something shows up DOA It will probably be nearly a month before I can get the results I’m looking for.

As I'm looking at the RAM now it is on auto notify.

as the RAM is pretty old, i doubt anyone will buy this stuff unless you are like me and just looking to add to the collection you already have.

All and all I am satsfied with the product however I will think twice before buying ram that is over a year old from now on.

3 out of 5 eggsWorking ram but doe not work well with AMD cpus.

Pros: Affordable at the time. ($70 after MIR)
-Attached heat-shields help dissipate heat
-patriot has a prompt rebate return and tracking system.

Cons: They worked fine at default settings but when I would try to OC the ram to 1600mhz as advertised I run into a lot of BSODs. Also attempting to change the timings to anything tighter then the default 9-9-9-24 would lead to instability.

I tried OC these ram alongside my AMD 955 II x4 but they didn't seem to be optimized for each other as I couldn't OC much before I ran into Bsods.

Other Thoughts: Bought these ram sticks back when I built my first rig. I went with a AMD build as it was my first time and the low cost/performance ratio attracted me over intel.

I did some research later to find out my AMD cpu specifically utilized a IMH (integrated memory controller) which basically makes it incredibly difficult to tweak ram settings alongside the cpu clocks. So maybe its more my cpu being the bottleneck here?? More on that in another review.

Great sticks I guess if you are running a Intel system that can optimize dual-channel but if your running AMD cpu I recommend another brand or seriers of ram.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your Ram. This ram was tested on and catered to the Intel P55 series and as such the advertised settings are meant for the Intel chipset. Please feel free to let us troubleshoot this issue with you by selecting the link below.

2 out of 5 eggs50%

Pros: Very inexpensive now, used to be much more.

Cons: Buying two sets of this ram to run in 8GB was a mistake.

Other Thoughts: I bought four GB of Sector 5 ram when I initially built my rig. It preformed out of the box great. All my timings were set perfectly and it preformed well.

The price has come down a lot since, so I decided to buy a second set of identical dimms.

I popped in the additional 4GB in my empty slots and booted the computer thinking everything would be gravy since I already had the timings all setup in a working system.

Well, unfortunately I was wrong. Two sets of this ram made the system extremely unstable. Normal tasks send the system to a BSOD memory dump. Fun.

So I read here that Patriot themselves recommended loosening the ram timings. Which frankly is extremely irritating, but OK. These are designed as "4GB" packages, so running 8GB is technically different. Sure.

2-3 hours of attempting to loosen the timings, and memtesting it still is not stable. Very disappointed.

What's the point of buying fast ram is you have to slow it down to get it to run?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear that you had some issues with your system when adding the additional set. Please keep in mind that we can only garantee that the ram will work at the advertised specs per kit. Because of the extra stress on the memory controller you might need to make a few other tweaks in the bios. For any technical assistance please don't hesitate to contact -

Kind Regards,
Patriot Memory Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsGood RAM, works as advertised

Pros: Actually had no problems with installation unlike the original Patriot 2G X2 modules I was pairing these with. Bios recognized them as 1600 mhz on first boot.

5 out of 5 eggsGood cheap RAM

Pros: Nice, fast RAM for a good price.

Cons: For some reason, this RAM only wanted to work with my other RAM if it was placed in the primary RAM slots. It wasn't a big deal, just a little extra hassle to figure out the initial issue.
