Follow- up review
- Pros: Outstanding card ! Runs all games flawlessly @ 1680x1050 on high settings. Standard Reference cooler works very well along with the Smart Dr. utility to keep the card running cool, 41-42c idle and around 55-58c load, and doesn't interfere with my CCC. I want to pick up another to Crossfire.
- Cons: Not 1GB....I had purchased this just before ATi released their 1GB model....This card had been discontinued by Newegg for sometime, except for an occasional open box item...current price !!! (these cons I've listed have no bearing on the performance of this card)
- Other Thoughts: This is a 2nd review from 8/28/08, having owned and run this card for over the past 6mos. I 'm very pleased with it's overall performance and have not had one issue with it.
I guess Newegg discontinued this card after the 1GB versions started flooding the market and people were buying those up over the 512mb. But I get the feeling that since prices have fallen the 512mb cards have become very good deals, especially for those looking to crossfire their system. I've been looking for another card to do that, but wanted a good match with this one. When I saw this card listed again in the retail version I was excited about buying it until I saw the price. It's the same as what I bought it for over 6mos. ago. It's as or more expensive than just about any other 4870 out there including 1GB versions. Come on Newegg, you guys are great, I've purchased alot of items from you at good prices.....But whats up with this ? This card should be well below 200 dollars... :(
New card version?
- Pros: I haven't installed it yet, but wow...looks cool!
- Cons: So, I just received my card in the mail from newegg. My card looks nothing like the one in the picture on the newegg site! It doesn't have the case with the picture of ninja-girl on it (fine by me!). Also, it is a single-slot width at the I/O, not the double-wide design pictured. Also, the fan is larger and more centrally located. Otherwise, everything else - box, CD, accessories, etc - are all the same. Is this a newer version of the card I got? I hope so. I really like its design better!
- Other Thoughts: Anyone else get this? I will post again with performance, etc when I get my rig built and up and running. Rig --> Antec 1200 case; Antec 1000w PSU; ASUS Rampage Extreme mobo; Core2Quad Q9550; 2x2GB DDR3; 2xVelociRaptors; ASUS EAH4870; 2xASUS DVDs
Awesome Card - Nvidia who?
- Pros: Great card I bought this to replace my old 7800 Gt that would atrifact on me occasionaly I got my money out of it after 4 years It was time to upgrade. Runs everything I throw at it. Runs crysis to my expectations and some. COD4, Eve online run flawlessly. Great packaging which Asus is known for also the extras that came with it are nice.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: Another reason why Asus has won in my book. They have a neat utility that you can adjust fan speed with and monitor temps -" Asus Smart Doctor" that they include, no need to manualy edit files. The covert art on the card is a welcomed since Im a fan of fantasy art. When the fan speed is adjusted the cooling is not bad at all. I know some other brands dont offer the fan speed adjustment utility like Asus does, people that arnt aware that the card runs a low fan speed out of the box and arnt aware of ccc file adjustment give it a lower rating. The stock cooler is plenty beefy, you dont have to buy and install a aftermarket cooler ( good-bye warranty) Idle temps are 45, under load between 55-60c
