2 out of 5 eggsMuch Slower then my previous generation WD6000HLHX, more expensive.

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: They never break, at least not for me. Owned every generation of Raptors since they first came out, up to this model, keep them running 24/7. Recently took a drill and cutting tools to my old 36GB Raptor to extract the Super-Magnets, the ultimate dropped screw finder. Both really fast and really cool running drives.

Cons: Didn't realize this "improved" model came out until after I bought it, every benchmark test on CrystalDiskMark shows the older as faster, some by a slim margin, most like 20-30%. Also Drive Reports 16MB Cache, not 64, and unlike the older one (with 32mb cache) some programs can't retrieve cache ram amount while the 600 worked with all. Smaller size, and more expensive than the Raptor WD6000HLHX.

Other Thoughts: - Drive calls itself a WDC Raptor, WDC traditionally stands for Western Digital Caviar, the cheapest model line and slowest (They use to beat green out from the no longer made 7200rpm models). I think its a purposefully scaled down version that's poorly labeled. My WDC WD5000HHTZ-04N21V1 was FW 04.06A01, while my WD6000HLHX-01JJPV0 was 04.05G04.
- Recently got myself a 7200RPM Toshiba 5TB X300. Its way faster than the Raptors in all benchmarks, some of them showing 35-40MB/s compared to 2-3MB/s on the W.D. Raptors. Faster access times too. Got it a couple weeks ago on Newegg for under $150 at the time.
- - W.D. Better play catch-up, maybe make a high density Raptor Hybrid drive with a large amount of SSD and Ram cache for a change, say at least 1GB RAM like my old 840 Samsung laptop SSD (Even Buffalo had 2GB RAM Cache a FEW years ago in one model series - no more of this 16 - 32 - 64 - 128 only just started offered in rare models Junk), add economical spin control idling at 10k and accelerating up to 15k when needed. That way I won't need my overpriced barley faster 15k SCSI drives anymore for fast large storage quantity's (Try to find a USB adapter to share that using your router).

- - - Ranted a little in this section, but It's looking like Raptor's going to be dropped at this rate and while my 1TB SSD hasn't very pricey, I would still like a fast storage option with a much lower cost. the access rates to perform nicely without a good constant defrag upgrade & upkeep, the speed for home family file sharing, and the space for everyones file history, weekly Boot Drive Backup Image Snapshots, and all our videos in x264 since Chrome-cast and Air-play STILL don't natively support HEVC .... Although my 9 year old laptop's runs 1080P HEVC in VLC: flawlessly: even with Windows XP Drivers for an ATI X1300 mobility GPU running on windows 10 (which doesn't have any other drivers for since Vista and later drivers were never made, especially for 64bit); & a dual core 1.8ghz 32bit Intel CPU equipped with 3gb RAM (and I'm pretty sure there's no hardware assist, lol). I over share those details because seriously: *EVERY* Smart TV/TV Entertainment mini computer should have had HEVC support starting in 2014. Now its finally the most popular format and the few things that support it are rarely kept up to date close to the latest decoder versions (DIVX tries to make you pay for their encoder/decoder software + codecs: build over 1.5 years since release)

5 out of 5 eggsFast and reliable.

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lasted for 3 years. Doesn't look like much but it was non-stop use in bad conditions (temperature, dust).
Gave ample warning for about 1 week before dying. Gave me enough time to order a new HDD, make sure all my data is backed up and make a Windows 10 installation USB flash drive. Once it died I was back in business in a few short hours.
Compare that to the two SSDs I had installed on other machines at home, that died suddenly and catastrophically, leaving me somewhat unprepared and very frustrated.
The perceived performance when compared to cheap SSDs on similar i7 machines, was more than honorable.

Cons: Lasted for 3 years only. I was hoping for more but I can't really complain.

Other Thoughts: I would buy this again perhaps, on the other hand one year from now I may decide to buy one of the high end PCI Experess internal SSDs if people keep being happy about them.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -10k RPM, what can you say?
-Fast!
-Still working after more than 3 years.

Cons: -It's not an SSD
-It's hecka not as fast as an SSD (probably 1/4th the speed)

Other Thoughts: -I got this puppy when it was on sale for $79.99. It's over $200 now. Are you kidding????????? SSD prices have gotten much lower than this!
-Just get an SSD. If you're buying at this price, there's something really wrong with you.
-Western Digital has lagged behind with SSD technology, and their hard drives are getting more expensive and has hecka lots of horrible reviews. I fear they were going down the drain. I used to buy WD drives exclusively, but have found the Toshiba 3TB (3 year warranty) to be very reliable. Too bad Toshiba made a new model with only 1 year warranty. Talk about taking care of your customers. Oh how the mighty (WD) hath fallen! WD recently agreed to purchase SanDisk in Oct, 2015. Hopefully Western Digital doesn't mess up SanDisk, which has some super fast EXTREME USB 3.0 sticks after Corsair's GTX series, has awesome super fast 95MB/s+ SDCards, and decent SSDs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, great, great drive!!!

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Oh my gosh, I dunno what to say, other than this drive is seriously one of the best non Solid State drives I have ever owned.

Western Digital makes seriously superior drives, and I implore you to buy from them in the future.

Cons: None, great drive WD!

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It stays cool. Decent Space.

Cons: Not as fast as it states, 10k rpm not true, at the fastest it maxes at 7200, very noisy, second one within a years time i had to replace. Kinda expensive for what it is..

Other Thoughts: Honestly I would prefer a Hybrid or a SSD drive over this, after i bought a hybrid, i noticed a HUGE diff. in many applications, specs, speeds, etc as well. You can pretty much have the best of both worlds with one.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Cooperative

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Very cooperative staff. I made a mistake, ordered the wrong device, and had to decline it to send it back to California for a refund. They were very responsive through email and worked with me. They even waived the restocking fee and shipping cost. Will definitely use them again.

Cons: N/A
