5 out of 5 eggsBest upgrade to old computer

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I removed the primary hard drive and replaced it with the VelociRaptor, and installed Windows 8.1. My wife's 6 year old computer is lightning fast now. Computer boots in 1-2 minutes now, versus 8-10 minutes before. I could not be more pleased with this upgrade. Installation was easy.

Cons: This drive cost $125. Ouch. However, the price of this drive was a lot less than totally rebuilding the computer with a new motherboard, processor, etc.

Other Thoughts: Don't think about it, just buy it. You'll be happy you did.

1 out of 5 eggsHDD Failed about 3-4 hours of Operation

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Sturdy/Durable

Cons: Failed about 3 hours of operation Hard drive caused extremely slow load times to get past the bios. Was able to load/install the OS to the hard drive but restarting the computer gave a windows repair screen. Reinstalled and made it to the desktop, started to install drivers but the system crashed mid installation. Restarted computer and windows installation would no longer see the hard drive properly. Bought an SSD to test if MOBO was bad. SSD works perfectly no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a hard drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's fast and it's quiet, beyond the ticking that hard drives make. Fits into the case and does everything it is expected: store data.

Cons: Not really a con, but a comment on the state of advertisement: It's only 465GB. Some - if not every manufacturer - uses base 10 to count the gigabytes. In the computer world, 1GB = 1024 MB. In the advertisement world of hard drive manufacturers, 1GB = 1000 MB. And, it is all legal as the manufacturer makes the statement that 1GB = 1000MB in the product description (the box). Even WD's diagnostics list 500GB while MS uses the accurate 465GB.

Caveat Emptor. It's what the world has come to.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quality
Fast
Reliability

Cons: Not a SSD , but with the price still pretty high per GB , cant do wrong with running one of these. 500 gbs for 129.99 is a good deal.

Other Thoughts: Some people might not have theirs show up in windows like I did. Had to run Disk Management no biggie tho, some users might think they have a dud if they have never used Disk Management to assign a drive and format.

5 out of 5 eggsLives Up to Its Name

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Makes my PC run like a dream while loaded with the OS: still more reliable then SSDs. The price ain't bad either.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Second VelociRaptor drive I've purchased since I was very impressed with the first. Some people say these drives make a lot of noise, but mine seem quiet enough. And if you game with headphones, this is a non-issue.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow up for the WD VR 500Gb

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast and half the cost of a SSD of equal size. I had a Samsung 256Gb SSD installed and it seemed to take a long time from power on to my home page. I ran some tests using a stop watch and found out the the VR was 14 seconds slower then the SSD. This was loading W8.1.

Cons: The only down side is the power needed to run the VR compared to the SSD.

Other Thoughts: The SSD was used in my workstation desktop. I don't do games. I use the desktop for video editing. So when SSD's first came out I jumped on the wagon because of the speed of loading my C: drive. Plus the read and writes were better the a HDD. Then a few days ago I noticed that my SSD was taking longer to load from startup to my home page. I ran Samsungs Majic and it showed nothing was wrong with the drive. So I though I would need to buy another SSD. Then I remembered I had a few older WD VR's around. I cloned my C: drive to the VR and did some type trials. The VR loaded almost just as fast as the SSD, and I saw no difference or much of a difference when starting my video editing software programs. As of now I have switched back to using my 3 VR's for my OS drive, my media drive and my render drive. But to be far my notebook does load faster with a SSD then a WD notebook HDD. Installed in a:

ASUS Z77 1150 Sabertooth MB
Intel CPU
750W PS
16Gbs memory
BR burner

5 out of 5 eggsAs good as they say

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great if not they only choice for a primary drive if you're not going SSD. These seem to be the gold standard for reliability. Not sure why or how WD has done this, but personally I'm willing to pay more for a drive if it's going to be solid and most importantly reliable.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: They just came out with a 2T external! DROOOL!

4 out of 5 eggsFast but loud

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This hdd cooks. I have yet to make the switch to solid state, but wanted a fast hdd, and I got it. This has been a good upgrade from the WD blue that I have been using. Solid construction.

Cons: I ignored some reviews about the noise this drive makes, but I now see what they warned of.

This drive likes to make a chattering chipmonk noise and it has not showed any signs of quieting down. It does not appear to be a defect but more a symptom of its design.

Other Thoughts: Although a bit loud, I decided to stick with it as it is performing great. I would STRONGLY recommend a different hdd if you are wanting a silent machine.
