1 out of 5 eggsGreat 5 GHz poor 2.4 GHz performance

Pros: Dual core cpu
Solid reliability
Decent range

Cons: Unacceptable 2.4 GHz performance, the latest firmware as of this writing still maxes out at 20 mbps performance. switch to the 5 GHz network and the performance is much better. I'm on comcast with a 100 mb connecting and I get full line speed with 5GHz. Basically if you don't need to xfer files within your home network or if EVERY device is 5 GHz the router is fine. But thats just not acceptable to me.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for 4 months

Pros: Lots of options

Cons: Became slow after 5 months

Other Thoughts: When I originally bought this, it was great. Then after 5 months it only gives me 8 mbs. And no, it's not my modem. I tested that and just talked to Xfinity as well, it is definitely this router.

1 out of 5 eggsjust not good at all

Pros: easy set up, great GUI,

Cons: it just too slow. it worked fine for about a moth then nose down its going back to Newegg ,updated the firmware try only one band 2.4 and still slow

Other Thoughts: I thought that since it was an Asus and Leo La Porte had given good ratings to this router I would give it a try but nope not good.
going back to Linksys

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly. Strong Signal.

Pros: I've run some rigorous tests on this bad boy.

Make sure to update to the latest firmware. AsusWRT Merlin firmware works well on the device too! I love the community of people that have worked with that firmware. It made the device more appealing and understandable. It allowed me to understand why people had trouble configuring the device, and what it required to function properly.

Lots of extra features for such a low cost device! I've read mixed reviews on the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. This has to do with the drivers in use. Try the Merlin Firmware!

My devices stay fully connected with no drop outs.

The Dual Core CPU can be overclocked and modded! Add active cooling if you're looking to overclock the device significantly.

The average user will not realize how fast or good this router is. It may work OK out of the box, but with some fine tuning to your environment it could be even better.

The CPU in this device is the same as a more expensive model out of its price range. With the open source firmware you can possibly make this device more cost effective than other devices in the price segment.

Cons: This device is not easy to set up. It took me about 3 days, and I am an IT consultant for 30,000 people.

My internet bandwidth is 60Mbps. I get that on Ethernet, and 5Gz Wifi. The connection on my laptop shows connected at 300Mbps (the full bandwidth of the wifi connection). However I get 15Mbps Internet transfer rates with the device right next to me on the 2.4Ghz band.

*******The problem is that 2.4Ghz connection speeds on wi-fi were not consistent at first. After updating, and flashing the firmware a few times, I was finally able to configure some great speeds.*******

The 5.2Ghz network was not working on my laptop. It may be the new laptop, but every other device I have works super fast on the 5Ghz network for the router.

Auto 20Mhz settings on either 2.4Ghz or the 5Ghz band lowers the transfer speed significanly on wifi.

Other Thoughts: Make sure your wifi network card is configured by manufacturer suggested settings with the latest updated drivers.

Make sure to set a specific channel on wifi, and don't leave it on "Auto". I've seen a great deal of speed improvement by doing this.

On 2.4Ghz also make sure to set it to 40Mhz as long as your wireless devices can support it. This will increase your transfer rates significantly.

If you transfer or stream a lot of data, as with any device, keep it cool. Use a small fan, or put it in a box of pennies. Just my personal advice with any home router. This will prevent it from overheating, and giving you network problems. So far the Asus RT-AC56U has not needed extra cooling. By manufacturer design the hardware works flawlessly.

If you intend on tinkering with it, Provide sufficient cooling, keep firmware files handy, and have fun!

2 out of 5 eggs2.4ghz wireless band unusable

Pros: High-quality ASUS construction
Nice admin panel
Easy setup or highly tweakable--whichever you prefer
Excellent wired router
Long range wireless

Cons: Continuous frequent dropouts at 2.4ghz band
Non-existent customer support

Other Thoughts: I replaced a dead router with an ac56u a week ago. It has the latest firmware (version 3.0.0.4.376.1665, released 9/23/2014, but I also tried two other versions) and I made very few changes in the settings. It has the same sysid for both bands.

My wife began complaining of poor internet performance on her laptop almost immediately. I put Ping Plotter on three computers. One is on the wired connection; two are wireless. Reviewing the graph after 12 hours, both the wireless-connected PCs (the second one is an HTPC fairly close to the router) showed many packet losses. The wired connection was rock-solid.

(Having said that, the second computer is connected to a bridge that can work on both bands--so these might actually have been dropouts on the 5ghz band! But they were dropouts nevertheless and occurring every few minutes.)

It was only then that I started to see in other reviews that this is a common problem with this router, one for which ASUS has yet to provide an answer. It seems to be related to the 2.4ghz band, which is where the drop-outs primarily seem to occur. I have about 15 internet-connected thingys in my house, so perhaps that's why people like me notice the problem. I suppose if you have only a 5ghz laptop or two, you'd never notice.

For me, it doesn't matter how many other good features the router has, this serious flaw is a deal breaker and renders it unusable. Like having a really nice car with three tires, it just doesn't matter. This is the first router I've experienced with this problem.

At any rate, after trying all of the recommendations from ASUS and others that I found on the net (ASUS never actually responded to my tech support ticket and cl-celeste@asus.com never responded to my email), I took the router back to the store and got the NETGEAR R6250 instead. I'm only 12 or so hours with it onlline, but so far the performance seems flawless.

If this frequently-experienced problem is something that could be fixed by settings-tweaking, then there is no excuse for ASUS not having a FAQ by this time to walk you through the solution instead of asking you to wait for never-returned emails. It makes me suspect there is no solution.

Shame. I think ASUS products are typically outstanding and it has become a no-brainer brand for me but it looks like this router wasn't quite ready for prime time.

5 out of 5 eggsSleek and Fast

Pros: After purchasing new modem and internet package we determined our older router to be the bottleneck. Purchased this router on a great sale day after some research and patience and I don't regret it. Reaches all corners of our place with no discernible deadzones. Also seems to handle many units pretty effectively (does lose some speed with 6 going at once but what do you expect?)

Sleek design! Smaller then my mental image and looks good on the desk.

ASUSwrt is pretty user friendly and configurable. Testing it's storage capabilities soon here

Cons: CHECK FOR FIRMWARE UPDATE- the model that was shipped to me contained outdated firmware (I believe before the AIcloud fix). Can't knock an egg as it's a pretty recent update.

4 out of 5 eggsKind of does the job

Pros: Works great 90% of the time

Sleek, slimline, attractive design

Cons: Slow and drops connections 10% of the time.

5GHZ range not that great

Internal antennas

Other Thoughts: Sometimes I experience connectivity and speed issues. Whenever this happens I power cycle the router (not the modem) and the issues disappear. This could potentially be things further down the line.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems for me :)

Pros: looks awesome, nice design, small footprint doesnt take a lot of room on your desk.
love the wireless ac
comes with everything you need
easy to setup

Cons: NONE!

Other Thoughts: I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that hasn't had any problems with this router. I don't lose signal , probably because most of my devices I use, use the 5GHz band a pose to the 2.4GHZ, but even my iPod doesn't lose any signal.

1 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed!

Pros: Easy setup and configuration

Cons: Dropped connections like crazy, range is not good, performance is worse than a 4yr-old router.

Other Thoughts: In short, you should totally skip this product. This router would give you more troubles than you would expect. And NewEgg charged you for shipping it back. Would not recommend the product and would not purchase from NewEgg for a long long time.
