5 out of 5 eggsHighly Recommended.

Pros: Super fast WiFi, USB 3.0 built into router, very user friendly interface

Cons: 5G range is a bit lacking, but it gets the job done. You have to keep in mind, when this router was first designed, 5G was a brand new thing, so just be glad it has it.

Other Thoughts: In the past two years, I've gone through 3 Cisco routers, a Netgear router, and a Buffalo router. I finally got this Asus router, and have had no problems ever since.

Now, if only I could get an ISP that wasn't absolute garbage....

2 out of 5 eggsGood features but not so great range on the 2.4Ghz frequency

Pros: Great features and great UI
* I find the USB 3 hard drive connectivity extremely helpful to share files that can be accessed from any computer.
* Good long powersupply cable and a thin adapter so it doesn't block two slots on the power extension
* Great speeds when accessing items on the switch or the USB 3.0 port. I can max out the 1Gbps ports
* Guest network - this is awesome so I can provide wifi to my friends without giving them access to the other computers or my shared hard drive
* Haven't had to reset this router unless I changed a major setting

Cons: I find the range and speed on the wifi access (2.4Ghz) very low - haven't seen issues with 5Ghz. I had expected much higher range and noticed the 2.4Ghz issue as one of my laptops doesnt support 5Ghz. I've tried changing the channel and some settings based on Internet forum posts where people have seen the same issue, used INSSIDer to find channels that don't have conflicts at my home but that hasn't worked either.

At first I thought this was an issue in my apartment but after moving to two different apartments and changing the location of the router within my apartment, I've sort of given up. I don't get decent range on my laptop in my bedroom which is <30 feet away from router (in the living room) and is separated by just two drywalls and this is across all channels. Unfortunately, I wish I had verified all this when I first got the router - I would have returned it. I have the router setup centrally on a single floor apartment. The other thing I notice is that if I keep a ping google.com -t ON on the laptop in my bed room, every 30 seconds to minute or so, I get a couple of pings which result in destination host unreachable. I don't see this on my computer which is connected to the router via wired network so this is definitely a wifi issue.

I ended up buying a Netgear power line adapter kit and used that along with my old router to get range in my bedroom. I wish I didn't have to do that. Given how great ASUS router reviews have been, but given my experience with the unit I got, I'm not sure I'll recommend them.

Other Thoughts: I don't use the AIDisk (to share your usb drive so it can be accessed from anywhere) so I don't know how that works. I've also not tried the download manager and print share features.

Given my range problems, I wish I had bought a router with external antenna - maybe that would have solved some problems.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Abhishek,

Thank your for your time in posting a review about our products. We are sorry to hear your experience with the router. Let me assist you, have you tried changing the channel bandwidth of the router? or check your 2.4 GHz frequency logs to see if there is an issue or if there are signs that the firmware wasn't loaded properly. Also it is important to have an updated firmware for the router to fix if there is any issues. If there is anything else that I can help or assist you with just email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place the case#N150719614 in the subject line for reference.

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

5 out of 5 eggsVery robust wireless router

Pros: This router has very good wireless performance on both 2.4G N devices and 5G AC/N devices. I can get up to 25MB/s transfers to my wired devices from a PC equipped with a USB Wireless AC adapter.

Never needs to be rebooted or reset, either. It just sits there and does its thing.

The power supply has a nice, long cord and the adapter itself is not one of those gargantuan bricks that block three outlets on the power strip. This is the first router I've owned that didn't require an extension cord for me to put it where I wanted it.

It has some blue status LEDs on the front (which are not obnoxiously bright) but the individual port link LEDs are in the rear.

The setup and web interface is fairly straightforward as well. I like that it allows you to set static IPs on your devices that are outside of the DHCP scope you've set... so if you set the router to give out IP addresses in the range of 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.255 for example.... you can set a static IP for a device using 192.168.1.2 if you wanted to. I've had other routers that wouldn't let me do that.

and maybe the biggest pro of all for some people... It supports DD-WRT! I don't personally use it on this router (I've tried it, but the stock firmware does all I need and then some so I ended up reverting) but it's nice to know that it has 100% support for it.

Cons: Nothing here worth taking off an egg for but if I had to nit pick, here goes:

No option for external antennas. I knew this when I bought it, though.

Included LAN cable is just a typical CAT5(E?) of questionable quality like you'd find included with any router and does not have "snagless" ends.. threw it in my bric-a-brac bin and used CAT6 instead

Other Thoughts: Would definitely buy again.

5 out of 5 eggs100% worth the buy.

Pros: Wifi range is excellent. I have a 3 story brick house about 8 to 10 active devices connected to it most of the time. Video streaming, file sharing, browsing is a breeze, no hiccups. Outdoors, the signal is awesome. I can use skype even 300 feet away with no problem, this is done with beam-forming tech this router has, even though the router is located inside the house (living room).

So keeping everything connected around the house is a breeze. Even if you have 1 wifi bar on your phone or laptop it will still pull minimum of 10Mb of internet, which is plenty.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: After researching the marked for a solid wifi router on the budget side this is the best I could find. Looking also at the internals and other technical reviews of this product I found that I cannot go wrong with it. I was sceptical about the software and how good it works, but ASUS improved every bug or added new features to it constantly until everthing worked perfekt.

Best value for money overall.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat new features w/ Firmware v. 3.0.0.4.378.4585

Pros: Great new security and management features including AiProtection module from Trend-Micro and adaptive QoS in the 3.0.0.4.378.xxxx firmware release. Seriously cool -- Thanks ASUS & Trend Micro! Current firmware upgrades were an important reason I chose this product and ASUS has not let me down.

I had a chance to use the dual WAN fail-over and fail-back feature with a tethered Android smart phone on USB 2.0. The whole house LAN was running smoothly at 4G LTE WAN speeds. Very nice.

Cons: Firmware upgrades often require manual checks & uploads from the PC -- the automated upgrade feature rarely works (it says "current firmware is the latest version", even when you know it's not true). Sometimes major changes even require a reset to factory default conditions -- followed by manually re-entering parameters. Make sure you have all the parameters, SSID, wireless key, etc., that you'll need before you upgrade. It's all kind'a old school, so NBD if you've been at this a while.

Devices accessing the Guest Networks don't display their signal statistics properly in the router GUI. You can see which ones are online, though.

Other Thoughts: See my first review 4/16/2014 -- still valid & not repeated here.

I have not had the problems with 2.4 GHz band that others have complained about. Yes, I had to change some parameters, narrow the bandwidth, and survey the area several times as the extreme range adapters were having trouble with neighboring signals stepping on them. It all took time, but this is a VERY congested condo building with more AP's than I can count. I'm very pleased with this router.

In a country setting, with no competition whatsoever, the usable range among a cluster of buildings is amazing. It just works.

ASUS just released a new model RT-AC55U Newegg no. N82E16833320225 that looks like a re-engineered AC1200 Router. No news yet, but it does have external 2 x 2 antennae....

3 out of 5 eggsPoor 2.4GHz performance

Pros: I haven't had any connectivity issues at all, however throughput on the 2.4GHz band has been frustrating at the least. Anything on 5GHz is rock solid and smokin fast.

Cons: You wont get more than 40 mb out of the 2.4GHz band with this router and that just stinks.
USB connected HD's are flaky, I moved mine off the router and onto my PI 2 and all the connectivity issues disappeared. I tried the USB3 and 2 ports, I reformatted, I disabled USB3, nothing alleviated the connection issues to the HD. The HD has its own power and I have never had an issue with it connected to any other machine.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Robert,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. I apologize for the inconvenience caused. Let me go ahead and further assist you. If you are having problems with 2.4GHz band and USB Ports, use the following troubleshooting steps:
Step 1. Please try to update the firmware version manually. You can download the latest version at support.asus.com.
Step 2. Please hard reset the router to update the settings and create a new Network Name/SSID for your 2.4GHz and 5GHz (Wireless Name/SSID of the 5GHz it should be different from the SSID of the 2.4GHz).
Step 3. Please try changing the Channel bandwidth to boost the frequency of 2.4 GHz to 40 or 20 MHz and control channel of 1, 6 or 11.

If you are experiencing the slow or intermittent wireless signal, If you are experiencing a intermittent connection, please try to place the router to a different location. That's why you encountered the disconnection from the internet due to interference. Elevate your router away from floors. You’ll get better reception if the router is on a desk, not on the floor. You should also pay attention to the kinds of materials the router and adapter is near. For example, placing the router on a metal desk or up against a metal wall will cause problems. Signals can travel through a wood desk easily, but metal will obstruct the signals. This is the examples appliances can cause wireless interference, including cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

5 out of 5 eggsFeature full.

Pros: Has many features of more expensive routers, though it doesn't advertise this fact. I was impressed by the dual-wan capability for example which can be used via one of the lan ports or certain 3g links. Has everything I needed to manage my network. I appreciate the network share drive support that this offers as well. Its not a NAS, but its not supposed to be either.

Cons: I wanted to disable use of older b protocol devices on my network and this did not provide that capability.

Other Thoughts: While I have read multiple reviews indicating drop-outs on the 2.4ghz I have not found this to be the case. Any problems I've had have been with the other device not holding connections (with anything, including this router) or severe congestion on the 2.4 ghz band in my neighborhood.

Overall I have been very happy with the performance provided by this router.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY THIS ROUTER!!

Pros: It looks ok. That's it.

Cons: Poor poor performance, as so many have stated. The
asus customer service is very poor. I would say it's **** but Newegg keeps me from expressing myself like that.

Asus suggested that I shut down the 5ghz part of this router to help with the N performance... What? Really, they sell it as a super 5'th gen AC unit, but hey, you can shut 1/2 of it down in order to make it actually useful. How about sending me a different model instead, one that works?

Do yourself a favor, and look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good router

Pros: Much faster than my previous D-link N router. Dual Band is nice. Very good range. I have the router in the farthest room upstairs and doesn't have any issues reaching downstairs.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Handles everything I throw at it. Have a laptop, a tablet, a ROKU, a couple of IPhones and a wireless printer
