1 out of 5 eggsThis router is slow right out of the box!

Pros: The router connects fine and no drops

Cons: I pay for a 100mbps connection from my cable internet and if I directly connect ethernet wire from my modem to my pc and laptop, I would get anywhere between 90 to 98mbps.

However, with this router, from ethernet to pc I get only 32mbps and with the wireless router at 2.4g and 5ghz I only get a lousy 19mbps connection.

I tried all the old firmware, setting, and merlin's firmware and none of them fix the low speed issue.

I've also tried setting the 2.4g at N only and 5g at N only, and I still have the same issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY THIS ROUTER!!

Pros: It's small, so doesn't take up much space?

Cons: VERY POOR 2.4GHZ (N) speeds.
Do yourself a favor, and do some research on this ASUS RT-AC56U wireless router... Ton's of people are getting very poor 2.4ghz performance. Like less than 1 meg usually, with the strangest spikes here and there, but overall a truly frustrating experience. All for a rather expensive unit too. I unfortunately was not ready to install this unit until several months after purchase, so I wasted money on something I cannot use now. Bummer to be me.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Have yout tried changing the 2.4GHz to N only and the 5GHz to AC only making your2.4GHz more solid to rock your N. You can also change the channel bandwidth from 20MHz to 40MHz for your 2.4GHz band. If you still have issues with this set up please email me and place case #N141248331 in the subject line for faster reference. 3 out of 5 eggsOpen Box? or Referb? does it matter? Probably not.

Pros: Finally got my hands on a router that isn't a G/N router.
Sweet little GUI
FTP server is a nice little add-on
Solid range on 5ghz

Cons: 2.4ghz issues? Seriously? Dumb me i didn't do my research like half the people that reviewed this and I'm stuck with a neat looking router that has 2.4ghz drop out ALL THE TIME. Upon further research I discovered after about 25-100MB of data transfered on the 2.4ghz band the connections drops down SLOW. Like 100kbps slow.

Other Thoughts: I've got back ups for back ups so I'm not super worried about it, but some of the laptops I use do not have the 5ghz option. So I just resort into pulging in my wrt54g to this new router and shut off the 2.4ghz on the asus. This seriously has to be a manufacture issue, I highly doubt this is a firmware issue because even the guys that flashed a custom firmware on it are still complaining. Seriously not cool for the guys like me who can drop a grand on a new laptop so i can use the 5ghz channel. (and no i'm not getting a dongle, suck it reader)

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Alex,

I have a couple of sugesstions. Login to your router and change the channel bandwidth under the wireless tab for each 2.4GHz and 5GHz. First change the 2.4GHz from 20 MHz to 40 MHz. Then change the 5GHz channel bandwidth from 40 MHz to 80 MHz to give it better strength. Also do you live adjacent from or in apartments? If so you should change the channel to 11 or 7 to avoid channel drop when you and your neighbors WiFi signals run interference with each other. If you would like to speak with me via email, place case number #N141252044 in the subject line for future reference. 1 out of 5 eggspoor slow asus repair

Pros: worked well at first (for 9 months)

Cons: very slow repair process...... minimum 2-3 week process for my repair to process thru each step of their repair wait sequence. They refuse to consider to ship a replacement unit (refurbished or not) excessive wait time. My router is only 9 months since purchase and they claim it has a 24 month warranty.... wow not acceptable for a "high end expensive unit". Stick with Netgear , D-Link or Linksys for a more reliable lower cost alternative!

1 out of 5 eggsNot good

Pros: Speed is very fast when it is working, LAN seems to work fine.

Cons: Wifi disconnects regularly (at both 5g and 2.4g), updating firmware and hard resets do not fix it. Only support solution offered it is to RMA it back to ASUS, which means I have to pay money to ship it. Do not buy this unit.

Other Thoughts: Unimpressed with ASUS as a whole. payed a premium for a router and got something that works less well than my $20 trendnet.

2 out of 5 eggsUnstable, short range, reboots slowly

Pros: Wired performance is good

Cons: Range craps out at about 60 feet on both bands, extremely unreliable performance which is sometimes and sometimes painfully slow, drops connections randomly, takes an eternity to reboot (which it must do often even for routine setting changes). The GUI is typical for Asus, which means it's u intuitive and looks like a bad translation from Chinese. This router is a big hassle I wish I never bought.

Other Thoughts: I've had this router for about a year. I bought it because I wanted a router that could handle a dozen devices and reach all corners of my normal 1/7th acre urban lot. This router has been just as poor as the cheap Linksys I had before - it barely reaches the backyard, with frequent drops from sixty feet. I've tried stock and Merlin firmwares, and of course I changed up channels. No luck. Ping times can be over a second even from right next to it. I hate Asus tech support. I just wanted a product that would work without frustration but this is not it. I expect higher quality at this price point.

5 out of 5 eggsI like it alot

Pros: Had me a-many wireless router, they are all the same right?

I think not now. I always took the $10-20 specials.

It seems to really have a load of power. I gained 20M on speedtest with the same adapters I used before. I did not think it matters.

I am getting a matching 900 level Asus to match this. I should more than double the speed I figure. Going from 20M to 40M now without a proper adapter amd hopoing to make the full 60M on my PC, my Apple Airport pulls in the full 60M already, thus the 900 level adapter purchase.

Cons: High price. Offset a bit with an egg instant coupn. Thanx!

Other Thoughts: Seems great,

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: Blazing fast router that replaced my old and sometimes useless D-Link DIR-615. My ipad can finally browse the internet at full speeds and everything else is working as they should. AiCloud is a nice feature to share and access your files remotely. Firmware updates are really easy with the web GUI!

Cons: None so far

5 out of 5 eggsASUS RT-AC56U

Pros: Easy setup with software provided. Own 2 for about 2 months, so far work seamlessly. Definitely a bonus to watch the YouTube video on this site.
Would definitely purchase again.

Cons: Manual doesn't cover much.

Other Thoughts: I was skeptical about this router after reading reviews, but ordered anyways. Didn't have any issues with setup as long as you follow the prompts during setup.
