2 out of 5 eggsPoor build quality

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: Decent amount of ram and rootable device

Cons: The build quality of this device is poor. One of the speaker covers came loose after having it for only a few months. The plastic going around the whole outside has some spots where it is loose like by the volume/lock buttons. Just recently, about a year after owning the tablet I noticed that on the top right of the screen some bubbles have appeared. My guess is that this is where the processor is located and the overheating of the snapdragon is causing this. Really bummed that the warranty is only 1 year. This tablet started falling apart after 3-4 months! I don't recommend this tablet. Go with a nexus or something else with higher build quality. Samsung has been going downhill lately.

Other Thoughts: It is one of few tablets that actually come with a built in stylus so props to that.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Choice

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: I have been setting this up/playing for a couple of hours, and it is very nice to be able to import my info from Chrome/Google so I am @ 100% in no time.
The quality of the screen resolution and all of the apps running is fantastic. Having all the features of my phone plus a screen size like this is excellent, and the apps to use for office suite meets and exceeds my needs.
For the price this product is a must have, and there is no need to buy a higher priced version unless you just absolutely need the extra screen size.
Up to date with KitKat 4.4.2

Cons: Charging/USB adapter port on the bottom is only an issue due to the need for a 90 degree adapter depending on usage (see Other Thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I paired this with a Kensington Folio Case/Keyboard and could not be more happy with the combination. With the tablet situated in the Kensington Folio, the charging port is not accessible without a 90 degree adapter, and even then it may not fit -- the fix is only a little slit in the case and life is good.
This setup is better than having a laptop of similar price due to size and portability.
I am looking forward to using this for a long time to come - unless my wife swipes it from me!

2 out of 5 eggsRMAed Twice

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: Beautiful display, runs well after bloatware is disabled. I really like the S-Pen/Wacom interface, and the organic feel of handwriting notes and drawing. The perks that came with the tablet were very nice too - 50GB of Dropbox for 2 years, $25 in Google Play Store credit, etc.

Cons: Battery life declined in the extreme after approx 5 months of daily use. The battery would completely discharge within 2 hours, regardless of use.

Second issue is inconsistent WiFi, even when sitting right next to the router the signal would repeatedly drop and be lost.

Other Thoughts: RMAed for the battery issue, the people in the Texas repair center were nice enough but I had to call and explain what was going on after I received email stating they were sending it back as-is because they could not reproduce the issue. After talking with the tech they did repair the tablet.

When I received my tablet it immediately needed an upgrade to Android 4.4.2 (good sign that they replaced the main board in it). Unfortunately the WiFi issue manifested itself within two days, it won't stay online for any significant amount of time. I am RMAing it yet again, in fact I am waiting for am agent now (and have been on hold for 40 minutes so far) because I am insisting on a next day shipping label to address this issue quickly.

After waiting more than 2 weeks for the first RMA to complete, I am not in a good frame of mind over having to RMA this tablet yet again.

3 out of 5 eggsShould have been designed better

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: Large 10.1 viewing screen, and a beautiful display. The 300+ dp view is amazing (at least as good as the comparative retina display).

Samsung's variation of Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) is stable and has given few problems, the S-Pen is definitely nice and works well, Samsung's built in software for writing works smoothly as well. For a tablet, it can handle individual, computationally heavy tasks well.

From experience, this also works well as a development machine (granted the landscape aspect ratio is reversed from that of a phone).

Cons: Where to begin....

Though I previously stated that the OS and S-Pen software run smoothly, I cannot defend any of the other "bloatware" on this machine. There is so much junk software pushed on here that the OS can easily get bogged down (most of which is useless or a joke). Polaris office is beyond a joke, I could not even open a PDF document with it, MyMagazine or whatever it is called is an absolute waste of space as well. If Samsung allowed for removal of this software, then I could understand it, however short of rooting the machine and voiding any warranties, this software is always in your face.

This tablet was optimized for use with the S Pen, therefore the haptic input is absolutely terrible (I'm not sure if there is a setting to adjust it for touch use, but I never found anything). I have to take out the S-Pen sometimes to just draw my password pattern (a reboot can sometimes fix this problem).

Finally, there is the utter lack of a graphics processor...

The screen is beautiful, but without hardware acceleration, this tablet is very, very sluggish sometimes. The Samsung engineers should have thought this through a bit better before choosing the processor.

Other Thoughts: Four months after I bought this machine, the 3.5 mm jack frayed from the inside. I am currently going through Samsung's RMA process (which has not been too bad, aside from the patronizing questions the support tech have asked). This incident is isolated I'm sure, therefore I am not using this to base any of my ratings. I am still not greatly pleased with this product and would not buy it again. At this point Google is offering much better options as far as Android tablets are concerned.

TL,DR:
It's a bit overpriced and doesn't have good touch input, there is a lot of excess software, there is not GPU for a huge screen. But the OS is stable, and the writing apps are decent.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: Good battery life
Has two processors - a quad-core @1.9GHz for performance that can switch to a 1.3GHz quad-core to save battery.

Cons: It can't do very much.

Other Thoughts: First time Android owner coming from a Windows background. Bought this Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 instead of the Windows Surface Pro. The intended use was checking email, paying bills online, accessing elearning and pearson mastering, saving guitar tabs for later playing, reading ebooks as pdf, and light browsing (like I do here at newegg).

Both Chrome and Firefox browsers consistently crash. Neither play nice with Gmail, and just trying to login to Gmail means either browser will crash. Well, Chrome crashed consistently upon logging in to Gmail, but at least Firefox let me login to read email but I still can't compose anything without it randomly deciding to tell me there was a problem and needs to close. The conclusion is shocking -- Google hardware running a Google app doesn't work with a Google service. Same issue occurs when attempting to pay bills online. I visit the webpage, the address bar flashes crazy incoherent text, the screen flashes, then the browser tells me it needs to close. Great, so I guess I'll continue doing on a 7 year old laptop what this brand new tablet can't. By the way I hope you don't like having multiple tabs open in a browser since any more than 4 or 5 leads to instability.

The touchscreen feels like it's designed for children with small fingertips. Either that or my hands are too big. I find myself accidentally pressing the wrong links adjacent to the link I want, or the tablet just won't register I've pressed a button often after several attempts to tap on it.

I've had issues with the copy/paste and clipboard that make it unreliable and unuseable. For example if I copy something to clipboard and attempt to immediately paste it somewhere else only about 10% of whatever text was copied actually gets pasted. It's like 90% just gets lost somewhere and no matter how many tries the clipboard either hacks it up into mumbo-jumbo or loses it completely. Other times the clipboard seems randomly unavailable and won't open. I've subsequently come across a lot of people online with similar clipboard issues.

Android does not support Java, but Java sucks so I guess that's ok. It just means that I won't be able to do homework on Pearson Mastering via the tablet and must resort back to my 7 year old laptop for that too.

I wish the tablet came with preinstalled courier font since I prefer monospace font. Considering the amount of bloatware that comes preinstalled it wouldn't be much to ask. The preinstalled bloatware like "my magazine" and "evernote" (among other things) can't be removed without voiding the warranty. Polaris Office that comes preinstalled in a joke because it's nearly impossible to write a paper or work in excel through the touchscreen interface.

Speaking of bloatware

About the only thing this Android tablet does well at is ebook reading in a pdf reader. So to me this tablet is a neutered computer really no better than the functionality of a Kindle or Nook. Oh yeah, and if you're having p

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome tablet just remember to get a tempered glass screen protector.

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: This tablet is very fast. I'm not sure why some are having "lag" as I have yet to find an app that will slow this thing down.
I purchased one for wife and myself and I could not be happier with the tablet save one little item.

Cons: My tablet did take a fall of about two feet (from my computer chair - thanks to our cat), while in a protective case that was closed, and the screen made a noise like a light bulb breaking. When I opened the case the screen had spider webbed over halfway across it's length.

My guess is that it must have hit just right to cause the break but I would definitely suggest adding a good quality tempered glass screen protector to the tablet to keep this from happening to you.

Other Thoughts: I have tested and owned several tablets over the last three years and nothing even comes close to the speed and quality of this tablet.

1 out of 5 eggsWelcome to the Samsung Lagfest 2014!

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: 1. External, upgradable storage
2. Big battery, but not big enough
3. 4K display
4. Light weight
5. S Pen

Cons: 1. Lagfest 2014
2. LagCon 2014
3. Lagapalooza 2014
4. Lagtoberfest 2014
5. LCD display, not TRUE BLACK SAMOLED
6. Battery not big enough
7. Cannot remove BLOATWARE, which contributes to 1, 2, 3 & 4
8. USB 2.0
9. S Pen lagfest
10. Exynos is SLOW!

Other Thoughts: I hate Apple, I will never buy another iPad because they only give you barely enough hardware to keep you on the cusp of the current technology.

However, when will the Android team release a tablet THAT IS NOT LAGGY???

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Device

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: I use this tablet mainly for school. It is really good for taking notes, and editing any PDFs that professors provide. Battery life is outstanding, I have never had it die on me.

Cons: The S pen is kind of small especially if you want to use it on a regular basis, however, Samsung makes larger scale ones for like $10, so that is a pretty easy fix. If you don't have the app Lecture notes, and plan to take notes with Polaris Office, or S Note, it can be difficult. Due to the fact that the tablet reads both your hand and the S pen for writing, so sometimes you can end up getting a little frustrated, however, if you get lecture notes there is a setting where you can have the tablet only read the stylus.

Other Thoughts: Like I said I mainly use this tablet for school, so I haven't played around with it too much other than using apps to edit notes and pdfs, using the browser, and watching movies and playing games, but judging just from that it is a great tablet.

3 out of 5 eggsBest Samsung tablet yet, but glitchy

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Quad Core 3GB RAM 16GB Storage 10.1" 2560 x 1600 Touchscreen Tablet PC Android 4.3 - Black

Pros: State-of-the-art stylus and note-taking app; great tablet specs that compete well with iPad Air.

Cons: My first device overheated, and I had to have it replaced. My second and current one occasionally would not detect microSD cards unless I factory reset the tablet. These glitches marred an otherwise terrific tablet.
