Does it work with Android phones?

Any device that has the ability to connect wirelessly with the following standards will connect to this router. IEEE 802.11ac, Or IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n Most likely about 99.9% of devices sold that connect to "wifi" will work with this router. My galaxy phone (android) had connected flawlessly with this.

Is this router compatible with Windows 8?

Absolutely. Windows 8 is a modern OS that should have drivers for most older hardware. I use this wireless router for my older equipment wireless and the new wireless equipment also works just fine. Remember it does 802.11 A,B,G,N,AC standards, which pretty much covers everything at this point.

I see a number of complaints about range not being long enough. I was led to believe this had a high range. Is it just the N band that is having low range problems, or the presumably longer AC band as well?

The N band is fine. The newer AC band (5GHz) is more limiting. I would say I get a range from the AC band of about 40-50 ft. The N band is about twice that. This kind of makes sense though because higher frequencies are inversely proportional to the distance they can travel. All in all the router performs well. Plus it was very easy to configure.

Does it also provide internet connections with Android phones or does it only work with Wi-Fi?

The router is dependent upon it Internet access from a cable modem or other high speed data access points. Input is via a LAN cable input. I connect my Android smartphones via WIFI access on the 2.4 GHZ band as they don't recognize the 5 GHZ band. Bottom line is that the is a very nice dual band router that is reasonably priced. I've had mine from Newegg for approximately one year.
