5 out of 5 eggsForbidden Island

Pros: A fun family game that stresses cooperation and encourages conversation. I’ve already played it over a dozen time with my near adult teens and have even had my son from college ask to join in. They actually put away the cell phones to play so it keeps everyone’s attention; including the friends that they have had over. Works best if you actually listen to each other’s thoughts on how the team can succeed. Typical game will take 30 minutes and the family time is better than any sit-com that would have taken the same amount of time (and there are no commercials).

Basic premise is you and your team members have flown onto an island with four treasures. To get off the island you must gather the four treasures and return everyone to the helicopter before the island goes totally underwater (assume the tide is rising). On each turn you can take up to three actions; an action can be to move, to give someone on the same tile one of your cards, turn in four cards to collect the treasure (if you are on that treasure’s tile) or you can shore up a nearby part of the sinking island – and you will need to do that often as the island is sinking at a logarithmically faster rate for each part of the island that is lost. Each player is also assigned a special ability that can be used as a move. Some of the abilities only work to support other players. For every player’s turn the island also gets a turn to sink further into the ocean so the name of the is cooperate and get out quickly.

Cons: You will not find this a fun game if you are looking to beat all your opponents and then party on the rubble of their crushed egos. In fact if you feel you have to control every situation then you will find yourself and your team “under water”, losing the game for everyone.

Other Thoughts: There is just enough chance in the game so that even if your team loses no one person will feel that it was "all their fault".

Because each player's special skill and the island's layout is random each game is different.

Although it can be played with two people it is more fun with three or four people.

Once you get the hang of the game it is hard to lose at the "novice" level but a real challange if you play above the "normal" level.
