Announced in 2012 and an upgrade of the long-serving EF 35mm f/2, the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is a wide-angle prime lens with fast maximum aperture. It is ideal for street, travel and medium-distance portrait, and is effective in low light conditions. With a redesigned mechanical and optical design, this lens features a Glass Molded (GMo) aspherical lens element to minimize aberrations and achieves high image quality all the way to the edges of the frame. The Optical Image Stabilizer system offers up to four stops of shake compensation, thus clear, superb images are possible in dim environments. A rear focusing system and ring-type USM deliver fast, quiet and precise auto focusing, while full-time manual focus allows photographers to override the AF whenever necessary. A micro-stepping drive for aperture control enables quiet operation for every shot, and a low speed focus drive delivers optimal results for video shooting. Compact and lightweight, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM has an 8-blade circular aperture diaphragm for soft backgrounds, a minimum focusing distance of 0.79 ft./0.24m, plus optimized lens coatings for minimized ghosting and flare.

Image Stabilizer Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology makes handheld photography more practical at slow shutter speeds, accommodating more low-light shooting situations than ever before. Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology uses miniature sensors and has a high-speed microcomputer built into the lens. The sensors analyze vibrations and apply correction via a special stabilizing lens group that shifts the image parallel to the focal plane. Motion blur is canceled, resulting in a sharper image.
Ultrasonic Motor The Ultrasonic Motor delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance, which is particularly important to video recording.
Full-Time Manual The full-time manual focusing enables photographers to manually tweak focus without switching out of the AF mode.
Rear Focusing A rear focusing lens has the focusing lens group(s) behind the diaphragm, which allows for compact optical systems that produce faster AF. And because the front of the lens does not rotate to focus, filter orientation remains stationary for unaffected effect.
