1 out of 5 eggsWorked for two months, then kicked the bucket

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: When it worked, it worked well, transferred files quickly.

Cons: After two months it died (tried on three different computers). Lights up but CF discs no longer recognized. Buyer beware

5 out of 5 eggsGood

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: Works well only on USB2. I use it for CF data transfer. The CF slot is nice, and doesn't seem of the low-quality flimsy type (the slot has long/deep guides that should make sure the pins in the socket don't accidentally bend - which was not the case for a low quality item I used to own).

Cons: Does not work on USB 3.0 slots on my PC.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat when it works

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: -Easy to use
-Decent transfer speeds
-Sleek and simple

Cons: -Feels cheaply made/fragile
-Random disconnects from USB port

Other Thoughts: I've been using it to import photos from my camera's SD card into Adobe Lightroom, but it keeps disconnecting from the USB port randomly. This is frustrating especially during long uploads when 3-5 photos will be corrupted because the device lost connection during import. I've had 2 projects now that should've taken an hour take over 3 hours because of corrupted import processes Note: I am using a USB 3.0 port. I'm not sure I could recommend this to fellow photographers. It isn't trustworthy over 3-5 minute (50+ photo) imports. However, as the title reads, when it does work, it's great.

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: Instantly recognized by Windows

Very fast
Thick USB cable but only about a foot in length

5 out of 5 eggsSmall compact great variety

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: I got tired of messing with different cables and connectors for my cameras, so got this to transfer files directly.

Works perfectly. Computer recognized and it's able to read all the mem cards. Very compact and much smaller than if I were to carry all the cables and stands for my cameras.

Comes with a short cable so great for laptop users, though you may need a larger cable for desktops, unless you like it to hang (still works though).

Cons: none

3 out of 5 eggsWorks well but does not support any USB 3 chipset using the Etron EJ168 chipset

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: In testing this card reader, it has great support for a wide range of SD cards, CF cards, and the annoying Sony m2 cards. Everything worked. (Also supports larger 64GB+ SDXC cards).

Cons: Upon attempting to use this card reader with the USB 3 ports on my gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 motherboard (which uses the Etron EJ168 chipset) the card reader promptly corrupted all of the data on my SD my SD card (to a point where the system detected the card as an unknown capacity (luckily I did not have any important data on the card).

Upon performing more test, I found that I was unable to save anything to any type of card, (corrupts data on SD, micro SD, CF, and M2), it simply corrupted everything. If used on other USB 3 ports such as ones made by NEC, it will work fine.

Upon contacting transcend about this, it seems that they are uninterested in fixing this compatibility issue as not enough of their customers use that chipset.

Overall, I am stuck using it on my USB 2 ports, and using a generic USB 3 card reader (tops out at around 40MB/s), but at least it works with the EJ168.

Overall, if you want USB 3 speeds and have a motherboard with a EJ168 chipset, then avoid this card reader.

Other Thoughts: I gave this card reader a lower score simply because they do not want to fix a compatibility issue, or at least add a function to disable writing if it detects an incompatible USB chipset, as one day, someone with actual important info will end up connecting it to an incompatible chipset, and lose a lot of important data.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Good, Not Happy

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: USB 3.0

Cons: 1st one I had wouldn't see microSD card. Replacement won't see microSD & SD cards at the same time. It's one or the other, but not both together. It sees either one of these with a CF card.

Other Thoughts: Kingston MobileLite G3 works better. It can see microSD & SD cards at the same time.

Probably not worth sending the Transcend back again.
