3 out of 5 eggsWorks well but does not support any USB 3 chipset using the Etron EJ168 chipset

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: In testing this card reader, it has great support for a wide range of SD cards, CF cards, and the annoying Sony m2 cards. Everything worked. (Also supports larger 64GB+ SDXC cards).

Cons: Upon attempting to use this card reader with the USB 3 ports on my gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 motherboard (which uses the Etron EJ168 chipset) the card reader promptly corrupted all of the data on my SD my SD card (to a point where the system detected the card as an unknown capacity (luckily I did not have any important data on the card).

Upon performing more test, I found that I was unable to save anything to any type of card, (corrupts data on SD, micro SD, CF, and M2), it simply corrupted everything. If used on other USB 3 ports such as ones made by NEC, it will work fine.

Upon contacting transcend about this, it seems that they are uninterested in fixing this compatibility issue as not enough of their customers use that chipset.

Overall, I am stuck using it on my USB 2 ports, and using a generic USB 3 card reader (tops out at around 40MB/s), but at least it works with the EJ168.

Overall, if you want USB 3 speeds and have a motherboard with a EJ168 chipset, then avoid this card reader.

Other Thoughts: I gave this card reader a lower score simply because they do not want to fix a compatibility issue, or at least add a function to disable writing if it detects an incompatible USB chipset, as one day, someone with actual important info will end up connecting it to an incompatible chipset, and lose a lot of important data.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Good, Not Happy

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: USB 3.0

Cons: 1st one I had wouldn't see microSD card. Replacement won't see microSD & SD cards at the same time. It's one or the other, but not both together. It sees either one of these with a CF card.

Other Thoughts: Kingston MobileLite G3 works better. It can see microSD & SD cards at the same time.

Probably not worth sending the Transcend back again.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Little Reader

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: This is a good little reader and it does it's job. I get very good speeds transferring data off of memory cards (depending on the card). My class 10 card out of my DSLR usually transfers around 30-45mb/s while my phone card transfers closer to 10mb/s.

Cons: I do not like that the USB cord for this is extremely short, and extremely thick. I also do not like the fact that you can only have one Memory card plugged in at any one time. I was hoping to use a space micro SD card as a smartcard for security.

Finally I run into some issues where I have to unplug and plug the USB cord back in after switching out mem cards in the device. Still haven't figured out what causes that issue.

Other Thoughts: Overall I like the device, I get good speeds out of it, which is what I purchased it for. It can transfer all my pictures from my DSLR much faster than plugging the DSLR into the PC so I'm happy. I knocked off two eggs for the issues and annoyances listed in the cons section.

5 out of 5 eggsNice, fast SDXC reader

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: USB 3.0 for faster transfers. I was can hit read speeds of 85-90 MB/sec with a PNY 64 GB SDXC card (P-SDX64U1H-GE) rated at 90 MB/sec read, 60 MB/sec write. With this card I got 76 MB/sec copying 145 files totaling 4 GB off the card, and 55 MB/sec copying a 18 GB file to the card.

I was able to get read at 30 MB/sec (the rated speed) on an older 16 GB SD card, which I couldn't do with my old USB 2.0 reader.

It's small, inexpensive, and I like the styling. No drivers seemed to be required, Win7 found it right away.

Cons: The supplied USB 3.0 cable that came with my unit is only 18" long. I'm using a Belkin F4U058tt USB 3.0 hub on my desk which came with a 4' cable, so the short cable isn't a big con for me. I thought someone might want to know. Transcend didn't specify the cable length, so I suppose you may get something different.

The LED indicator is basically on if the unit is powered and will blink if there's any data access happening. I wish it would go off if I eject the SD card, but it doesn't (probably because it's shared with the microSD and CF ports).

Other Thoughts: The "convenient LED indicator" is blue and is located on top, at the left edge aligned with the "(T)Transcend" printing. It's not blindingly bright, which is good in my book.

USB powered, but that was expected. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on an i7-3770k and using a USB 3.0 port on my Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H motherboard.

I bought this to go with a new DSLR that shoots 28 MB raw files, so the speed is nice. Good reader, no regrets!

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - Black

Pros: Fast. I used it with my Thinkpad X1C and a Sandisk CF card (rated 90MB/s) and got 80+MB/s. Four times faster than my USB 2.0 card reader.

Cons: Haven't noticed yet.
