3 out of 5 eggsWorks Great - When it Works

This review is from: Silicon Power 16GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive Cap-less design, Classic diamond-cut pattern

Pros: Fast and cheap. No separate cap to lose. I bought two, and one worked fine ...

Cons: ... and one didn't. Depending on the machine and USB port, it was either recognized as USB 2, or not recognized at all. RMA time.

Other Thoughts: At least it's light - only $0.70 postage to RMA.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performing USB 3.0 flash drive that I use daily

This review is from: Silicon Power 16GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive Cap-less design, Classic diamond-cut pattern

Pros: Silicon Power did well with designing this flashy looking flash drive. While reading or writing to the flash drive, there's a red LED indicator that shows its activities through the black plastic. Its write and read speed are advertised to go up to 120MB and 50MB respectively, and I was actually able to get those speeds. Our disk speed test results showed 134MB read and 54MB write at best, and while the write speed would even drop to 20MB at times, writing speed remained consistently around 120MB. Excellent. Of course, it was tested on a USB 3.0 port and you can expect it to be noticeably slower on USB 2.0.

It turns 360 degrees all around the flash drive in whichever direction you choose to, and stays slightly hooked on every 45 degrees to prevent it from sliding all around uncontrollably. The mechanism feels solid and not cheap at all.

The diamond cut lines make it very attractive especially under lights and definitely gives it a premium look. It performs really well as advertised. Being able to load up a large video file quickly from my computer and plugging in the back of my smart TV went very smoothly and worked without any issues. This flash drive is not only fun to look at, but it's definitely a solid performing device that I use daily!

Cons: While it isn't the smallest or the thinnest one you can find in the market, one wouldn't have to worry about losing its cap or worry if the plug would get damaged with this. If you were to keep the swivel cover aligned to the flash drive, you wouldn't see the light at all, and I personally think white light would've been better than a dull red one, but that's just me. When plugged in, It can get a little hot.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Silicon Power 16GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive Cap-less design, Classic diamond-cut pattern

Pros: Solid build quality
Great read performance
Inexpensive
Capless design with activity LED
Stylish

Cons: Poor write performance for a USB 3.0 drive, barely on par with a decent USB 2.0 drive.

Other Thoughts: I wasn't familiar with this brand but I decided to take a chance based on some decent (though inconsistent) reviews from around the web.

The performance results that I did find from various review sites varied so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use this as a drive for transferring files or as a (mostly) read-only drive for loading OS and various utilities.

My results -

System:
ASUS P8Z77-V Pro/3770k
Intel USB3.0 ports
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
Windows 7 SP1 x64

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64
(Formatted FAT32, 1000 MB file size)

Read Write
Seq (MB/s) 117.0 20.37
512K (MB/s) 103.2 0.655
4K (MB/s) 9.314 0.172
4K QD32 (MB/s) 8.632 0.108

I ran tests using Windows Explorer to read and copy files ranging from 200MB to 2.5GB and had similar results:

Small files
Reads 116-120 MB/s
Writes 19-20 MB/s

Large files (1GB +)
Reads 110-114 MB/s
Writes 16-18 MB/s

The form factor is nice, much smaller and leaner than the Jumbo type drives like the Sandisk Extreme. I had no problems accessing adjacent usb ports on my various desktops and laptops with this drive inserted. The swivel cover has 4 distinct "locked" positions. When rotated to the rear it stays snug enough so that it doesn't flop around when trying to insert the drive into a port.

WIth the somewhat disappointing write performance of this drive I'll only be using it in the read-only capacity. For transferring data I'll stick to my other USB 3.0 drives like the Sandisk Extreme 32GB which has 2x the read performance and 5x the write performance.

Durability and longevity are unknowns for now, if I have any problems I post a follow up review.

Overall I give this USB drive a solid 4 eggs for it's form factor/design, build quality, solid read performance and price paid.

5 out of 5 eggsA fast performing flash drive with a unique swivel design

This review is from: Silicon Power 16GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive Cap-less design, Classic diamond-cut pattern

Pros: + Price ($20.44) is the perfect price for the benchmarked results.
+ Very fast benchmarked speeds.
+ Unique design allows user to use the flash storage without issues of dust collecting or sliding.
+ Compatible with USB 3.0/2.0/1.1 ports.
+ Product registration is quick and easy.

Cons: I have no cons for this device.

Other Thoughts: Flash drives have been an important media since the creation of expandable storage. People have used these portable devices from storing music to important files and information. Silicon Power has made the Silicon Power 32GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive for these uses.

Package Contents:
1x Silicon Power 32GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive

Build:
The flash drive is very small and light (2.1 x 0.7 x 0.4 inches; 0.3 ounces). The design of this drive is unique, as it is diamond textured and able to swivel at a 360 degree angle. I really like the concept of this device, as there is no possibility of the drive sticking, like slider designed flash drives, or the need for a cap, which could be lost and allow dust inside. This design has all the positives without any negatives. On the silver swivel is the Silicon Power logo, name, amount of storage and USB 3.0. For users unsure about compatibility, this drive is compatible with USB 2.0/1.1 ports, but won’t transfer optiminal read and write speeds that USB 3.0 ports can achieve.

Software and Testing:
The name of the drive that arrived is named “SP UFD U3” that contained 29.4GB of useable storage. Included on the drive is an executable file that will link to Silicon Power’s product registration, which is quick and easy. This is probably the easiest method I found for any product registration.

I then ran a benchmark using CrystalDiskMark and found the following results:
Read: 82.71 MB/s
Write: 104.7 MB/s

These results are very fast for a USB 3.0, as the few USB 3.0 flash drives I tried testing would only achieve results of 50-60 MB/s. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a cheaper USB flash drive that is fast, and is why I give this product 5 out of 5 eggs.
