FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I am having difficulty removing my old thermostat?
Often, the thermostat will separate from the wallplate with moderate pressure. Other times, there might be small screws holding the device in place. If you are unable to pull it off, please refer to your thermostat manufacturer's website or manual for removal instructions.
NOTE: Do not place your old thermostat in the trash if it contains mercury in a sealed tube.

I have additional wires in my wall that were not connected to my old thermostat. Do I need them to install my new thermostat?
An extra unused wire in the wall can be used as the C wire for your new thermostat. The extra wire will also need to be connected to the C (common) terminal at the heating and cooling system. This will provide power to your new thermostat.

What tools or materials are necessary for the installation of my new thermostat?
In most cases, the only tools and materials required are a small flat edge screwdriver, #2 phillips screwdriver, your thermostat ID card (located in the box), and your home Wi-Fi Network password.

How do I know if my old thermostat contains mercury?
The thermostat will have a glass tube with a silver liquid inside of the tube. Mercury is typically found in older mechanical thermostats like the Honeywell Round T87 and rectangular T8090.
NOTE: Do not place your old thermostat in the trash if it contains mercury in a sealed tube.

What is a C wire?
The C wire originates from your heating/cooling system and provides 24 volt power to your Lyric. "C" stands for common and there is no universal color used to designate this type of wire. If you do not have a C wire, your Lyric will instead draw power from your heating and cooling systems to power its battery.

Do the color of the wires correspond to the letters on my new thermostat?
There is no code governing wire colors and thermostat connections. The thermostat should be wired by the letters found next to the wire screw terminal block. If you do not know the letter labels, then you can trace the wires back to the air handler/furnace or heat pump/ac unit. That will allow you to determine the function of each wire at the system and then allow you to attach it to the matching terminal on the thermostat.

I do not have a C wire on my old thermostat?
If you do not have a wire connected to a C terminal or one that is labeled C on your old thermostat, there might be an extra wire that is pushed into the wall or wrapped around the wire bundle coming from the wall. Gently pull on the wire bundle to check whether there are any additional wires. If you do not have any additional wires, please refer to the Install Videos for alternative wiring.

I am not sure whether my new thermostat is wired correctly?
Honeywell offers several resources to assist in the wiring of your new thermostat. These resources include: Installation videos, a User Guide and a Quick Start Guide.

My heating and cooling system has a terminal labeled "COM". What is a COM terminal and what do I do with it?
A COM terminal is often used as another name for the C terminal and issued to provide power to your thermostat. COM can also refer to a communication circuit and will not provide power to the thermostat. If you have both a C and COM terminal on your heating and cooling system the thermostat should be wired to the C terminal. Please refer to the Quick Start Guide for more information.

How do I find the password to my router?
Check the back or bottom of the router or the operating manual for the password. If you are still unable to find the password contact the router manufacturer.

5 out of 5 eggsAfter owning this theromstat for over a year...it is a MUST buy!!

Pros: Easy setup, no monthly fee, set temperature using smartphone , tablet, or computer. Adjust schedule from smart devices as well. Notification of filter due to be changed based on user input of filter change cycle. Email notification of wifi signal loss an/or extreme temperature of home (extreme temperature is set by user) . Change screen color for season, wall color match or your mood. Touchscreen with adjustable time-out backlight dim setting. No battery to replace however it does require a common wire to work as advertised.

Cons: none after one year of use.

Other Thoughts: I would buy this again

all around great product

5 out of 5 eggsLove this Thermostat

Pros: I did a lot of research before purchasing this Thermostat. When I'm in the family room and watching TV I simply open my cell phone and turn up the heat its really simple. Or if I feel I'm chilled I open my cell phone and check the temp using the Honeywell App. No pausing my show, walking through the house. You can change the color of the screen with themes to match your mood. SIMPLE TO USE.
I can be out at a jobsite and if the weather gets cold I can turn the heat up for my dog anytime anywhere.

Cons: The only Con is occasionally the Wifi will disconnect (Usually due to power failure or router unplugged) It does not always reconnect by itself. This leads to confusion but its like any other device that disconnects from Wifi. I read through many troubleshooting help files and the Honeywell forum and didn't find the fix until I experimented myself.
The fix is simple, go to the Thermostat, disconnect from your Wifi connection, reconnect. Then be patient it may take several hours at times (Usually several minutes) before it establishes a connection. Being PATIENT is the key.
Keep in mind routers sometimes lockup on the Wifi side so unplug your router, power back up. Go to Thermostat and disconnect from Wifi, reconnect and be PATIENT. This has never failed me....

Other Thoughts: I would repurchase this again and recommend it to my friends.
Friends do notice it when they visit and I'm happy to show them how simple it is to use.

1 out of 5 eggsrequires a monthly fee to use the product as intended!

Pros: neat product, has many ease of use pluses...
reasonably easy to set up (considering)

Cons: you have to pay a monthly fee to be able to use it as intended! (how much is it worth to you to be able to use your heat/ac like we advertise? :/
they could have done this a different way and not had it cost you a monthly fee... but they want you to pay them every month... if you are going to have to pay them every month (like a phone bill) they should give it to you for free!

Other Thoughts: there are other products that provide the same service without paying monthly fees.. why would you buy this one?

3 out of 5 eggsGreat thermostat, home automation choices leave much to be desired

Pros: Thermostat looks nice, is easy to install - Even I did it in 30 minutes or so, never having installed one before, and the people who installed my furnace and previous unit didn't use any standard color code, so I had to be REALLY careful to connect wires correctly based on what was hooked to the old unit, even though colors were wrong.
Screen is easy to read, unit looks professional and it works as advertised. Remote access is easy and reliable through honeywell website, or iphone app.

Cons: This is a high-end thermostat in a world where home automation, and the"Internet of Things" is expanding fast. There are a lot of people doing different things to experiment and automate different things in their homes. If you are one of these people, steer clear of this unit. Go pick something else. The problem is, this is such a locked down system. The honeywell thermostat is controlled through the honeywell website, which means you have no local network based control of it. Everything you do is either through the keypad like an old thermostat, or it goes through the honeywell website. This means that your home automation is useless if you're not using Honeywell's own system. Want to connect it to your Vera? Too bad.. someone made a great plug-in, but many people have problems with it (I can't get it to work after a year of trying), and if Honeywell changes their website, so that the web calls are different, you're out of luck until the open source developer has the time to reverse-engineer their system again, and update the code. It shouldn't be made intentionally this hard! What if honeywell decides 5 years from now to stop providing their web service to "old" thermostats? You're out of luck.. no more remote control. Honeywell has been asked, but apparently refuses to provide any documentation on the protocols to control the thermostat directly, so it's limited to only those integrations to systems made by companies who apparently pay a license fee or something to honeywell to get them to provide the docs.

Personally I wanted to be able to have remote temperature sensors around the house, and have my home automation system make the decision that if the temperature was unbalanced between different rooms, to turn on the fan and circulate the air, but I'm unable to do that with this thermostat. There should be a web call, or some other locally accessible API available to control the thermostat from other home automation controllers in the house, but they're simply not available.

Other Thoughts: If this thermostat is going to be installed for someone who isn't going to EVER automate their house with any system not blessed by honeywell, or if you only want remote control to a thermostat so you can do things like remotely change the temperature when you're on vacation and forgot to do it before you left, this thermostat is fine, but if you are buying a smart, network controlled thermostat because you have ideas of connecting it into other devices in your house, or you dont like using a device that wont work unless the manufacturer still supports it because their website is required for any remote control, then this is NOT the unit for you. there are plenty of other good options in the same price range.

5 out of 5 eggsBest thermostat I've ever had

Pros: - Easy to install. The hardest part was patching the holes from the old one and retouching the paint because of the smaller footprint of the new one.
- The menu is very easy to understand and use
- The display with the bold white numbers and the contrasting background colors is much easier to read than the Honeywell WiFi that the one it replaced
- It connected immediately to my home network
- Looks much better on the wall than the large white box of the old thermostat

Cons: I can't come up with any negatives for this thermostat but if I have to say something the terminals for connecting the wires are a bit small but I look at that as being a minor inconvenience given all the advantages and the fact that you only do the wiring once.

Other Thoughts: - New Egg has a good price for this item and my local utility had a $50 rebate for purchasing a programmable WiFi thermostat and the fact that I could donate my old one to Habitat for a tax deduction brought this price down below Honeywell's next lowest model.
- I would definitely recommend this thermostat to anyone in the market for one . . . definitely worth every penny.

4 out of 5 eggsBeware of your current wiring!

Pros: Excellent instructions and youtube "how to" videos that help with installation and wiring. Very good on screen setup that simply asks if you have Y or Y2, W or W2 (or both). Also, very nice visual appeal. The different display colors are nice as well as a good variety. Physically, the product is compact and sturdy. The quality is good and Honeywell is known for their Thernostats.

Cons: Instruction book was lacking our final solution. We had to refer to the Honeywell youtube videos to figure out the proper wiring for our application. Unable to adjust all settings from smart phone (such as color theme).

Other Thoughts: Good product for the money.
Our energy provider has a nice rebate for this product.
The app is excellent!

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to set up and use. Smaller than it looks.

Pros: Easy to install. Very good manual and helpful videos on their web site.
Easy to read display.
Vacation mode.
Internet connectivity provided for free from Honeywell, very simple.
Apps provided for free too.
Touch screen is responsive and easy to read.
Cheaper than the Nest.

Cons: Large packaging for such a small device.
It is small and barely covered the whole left by my old unit, but looks fine.
Since it is small, it took a while to get my stiff wires connected in the small space available.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this to others and would purchase again.
As mentioned, I wouldn't mind the unit being larger but a larger display would make it more expensive.
Connecting to the internet over WIFI is very easy and works reliably. I can control it from anywhere and see the temperature in my house. Honeywell provides an account on their servers for free to manage the connection, as well as free apps.
I had to hook up one unused wire on my furnace to the C-wire to power the device. Just had to strip a little off the wire and attach it at the furnace, very simple.
