This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: got a new ultra book from my wife, with two hubs to compliment the shortage of expansion ports. suprise turn disappointmet. One worked for two days, one just doesn't work off the box. Return them back!

Cons: NE service is as fast as ever

3 out of 5 eggshas issues

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: Has 7 ports and power supply, plus is heavy enough to stay in place on desk.

Seems to work fine with low-speed USb serial things (& charges phones fine!)

Cons: Plugging USB flash drive in seems hit or miss. Sometimes they are recognized by my Win7 system, sometimes not. I had bought this hub in part to reduce USB wear on the direct PC USB ports, but I've just gone back to pluggin my USB drive into PC daily.

Other Thoughts: Since I do use many USb serial devices it's not a total loss, but the frustration of USb drives which work or don't is not good.

1 out of 5 eggsChanged my mind

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: none

Cons: I changed my mind. I have to pay the postage to return this? This is an excellent reason to buy from a brick and mortar store.

2 out of 5 eggsdo NOT buy - keep looking

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: It works, sort of.

USB flash drives work fine, both USB 3.0 and USB 2.

This powered hub works with USB 3.0 and USB 2 connections from computers & laptops.

WHEN it works (see below), the speeds seem to be at specification given other system factors. Using a performance USB 3 flash drive on a powerful system and transferring to & from a performance SSD, this hub did not appear to bottleneck USB 3 speeds.

HOWEVER .... and it's a BIG however ...... SEE CONS:

Cons: I have my doubts that this is actually a powered hub. The power supply that came with this seems to work, as I tested it with other devices When plugged into this hub, it lights up as if it is supplying power (also, draws ~3-4 watts of power with nothing else plugged into it, according to my Kill A Watt meter).

The hub itself seems to not tap any of that power to send needed electricity to devices that draw on it. This is a TOTAL FAIL of the entire USB 3.0 specification.

To be clear, normal flash drives plug in and work. I tested about 20 of them, a large mix of manufacturers, sizes and ~2/3 USB 3 and ~1/3 USB 2.

Also, if I use a powered external enclosure for an HHD or SSD, they USUALLY work. Occasionally they will not be recognized when plugged in, but re-plugging them in USUALLY allows them to connect. In the one or two cases that did not work, a reboot of the system was needed and then they worked as they should.

HOWEVER: _unpowered_ external enclosures for HDDs (2.5" notebook HDDs) and SSDs refuse to work on this hub. I have a mix of about ten different notebook HDDs and another half dozen SSDs of various manufacture.

IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to get any of these to work on this hub .... which is, by the way, the ENTIRE REASON I bought a POWERED HUB. I knew these devices require extra juice, so I specifically bought a POWERED HUB to supply the requir4ed electricity to run these devices.

And, this hub cannot perform that function.

Every single HDD and SSD that did not work on this hub do, in fact, work on another powered hub (Tek Republic TUH-3400) which I had to but specifically because this Orico hub cannot perform its basic, required function. Also, every one of those devices work when plugged directly into a computer, and in one case a HooToo USB 3 add-on card (powered internally with a molex connector off the computer power supply).

Oh, and I use two different 2.5" enclosures, one of them Orico, with identical results.

The inability to provide the power for an SSD is just ludicrous. It is a jaw-dropping FAIL considering how ridiculously little power an SSD requires. I even get these to work on unpowered notebook hubs (Tek Republic TUH-300, for one example). They even work over USB 2 (Rosewill RHB-320R powered USB 2 hub, for one example).

Really, GET THIS: I can access my notebook mechanical HDDs over a USB 2 connection (powered or unpowerd) using my external enclosures. But, this Orico powered USB 3 hub FAIL miserably.

Just a jaw-dropping, clown show of FAIL.

Other complaints in the reviews warn about very tight connections that stress both this product and the items plugged into it. Yes, I also am experiencing that same issue with most items. A few plug/unplug easily, but most are very tight and have to be removed with care to avoid unnecessary stress on teh connections.

Nitpick: the LED activity lights are about 3x or 4x brighter than necessary. When 6 or 7 are lit up at once, very

Other Thoughts: 2 eggs because I have it connected and use it to manage data across flash drives and POWERED external enclosures. So far, it seems to be able to handle that.

I rarely ever review anything before six months. Often I wait a year.

However, the FAIL is so strong on this product, I felt obligated to publish a review after only ~6 weeks.

I ran it through its paces a lot in that time, specifically to try and trouble-shoot it and see if there was something wrong on my end. After buying another powered hub for comparison -- which works perfectly as advertised and expected -- and running tests across six different Windows PCs and three different laptops, I can confidently say the problem is with this Orico hub.

Unfortunately.

I do have a number of Orico products, and very little to complain about those other products. So, this is a pretty huge black mark because it's a fairly expensive FAILure. Will be approaching Orico products with much more caution in the future. I usually allow three strikes or over ~$50 under most circumstances before I abandon a particular brand ... so, Orico, you're most of the way there. In particular because I bought this product in a rush because I needed it to work, and it didn't and caused me quite a bit of grief.

Given that the other reviews also list several issues (some of which I also experienced), I think the design of this particular model is just bad, and poorly implemented.

The only reason I'm keeping it is the limited functionality that I am able to put it to,

AND, I want to see if anything else starts going wrong wit hit as I continue to keep it in service. If it degrades no further, part of my confidence in Orico products will be somewhat restored. If this product continues to degrade (such as ports dropping out, the soldering issue already mentioned in earlier reviews, etc.), I will then have even less confidence in the brand when I am shopping for solutions in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsORICO 7-Port USB3.0 Hub

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: - 7 USB 3.0 ports for lots of connections
- Sturdy Build
- Reliable
- Excellent transfer Rates when Populated with Many External HDD's
- Relatively Inexpensive On Sale

Cons: - Blue Lights Are VERY Bright!
- Requires Power Supply To Function.
- Computer will Not Reboot while Drives Are Connected on Hub.

Other Thoughts: In general, this 7-port hub works very good. It is Reliable, which is a key feature for me since I use it on a server that operates 24/7. The hub has good transfer rates even when all ports are populated with external HDD's. I have not had problems with either the power supply or the USB 3.0 Cable. Some might complain that the cable is too short. It works for me and a shorter cable has less resistance and potentially higher data transfer rates than a long cable.

I really have two complaints about this hub. The first is that the Blue LED's are too Bright! Remember, if you use all the ports, there are 8 Blue LED's on at the same time. At night, this is enough to light up an entire 4 meter X 5 meter room enough to read by. If you have this device in a room where you want it dark, you need to use black electrical tape over the LED's to block them out. It would have been nice to have a switch on the hub to turn off the LED's if desired.

The second problem that I have with this hub is that the computer will not reboot if the hub is connected up and has external HDD's attached. The server keeps looking to boot up the OS from one of the external data HDD's instead of the internal OS SSD. This doesn't happen when the external HDD's are connected directly to the USB 3.0 ports on the server so it has to be an interaction with the hub. I took an egg off for this.

Be aware that, unlike many other hubs, an external power supply has to be connected to this hub for it to work at all. This does improve the hub reliability but may be a problem if you only have a limited number of outlet spaces for all the power supplies of peripherals.

In conclusion, I have found this Orico 7-port USB 3.0 hub to be reliable and fast. I recommend it if you connect up a lot of high speed peripherals like external HDD's.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks OK but have to delay startup

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: Works just fine for USB 3.0 external hard drive. I use it as an extension cable for my external hard drive that has a very short cable. Works fine once I do what I talk about in Cons.
I have not had any of the tight USB plug or computer crashing issues mentioned in other reviews.

Cons: Will not start up with computer. If I have the hub and power supply plugged in when I start the computer (Dell Optiplex running Win 7) the computer reports it as an incompatible USB device and does not recognize the hub or any attached devices. I unplug the power cable before starting the computer then plug it back in once the computer is booted up and everything works fine.

Other Thoughts: I guess it is nice not to have to install drivers but it would be nice if I did not have to remember to unplug the hub each time I shut down the computer.

1 out of 5 eggsDangerous!

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: None that I can find. Would put no stars if i could!

Cons: Didn't work and destroyed my system! Luckily I had just done a complete backup (HD clone) before I installed this thing. When I turned the computer on after installation it immediately went into a loop and just kept rebooting. Turned it off, removed the hub and tried again. It still stayed in the loop. Had to rebuild the hard drive - could not even get to a system restore -could not boot into safe mode. Be VERY careful if you buy one of these! Unusual for Orico who is supposed to make good products.

1 out of 5 eggsBad soldering, overly tight USB connectors.

This review is from: ORICO H727RK-U3-BK 7 Port USB3.0 HUB with Premium 12V/2.5A Power Adapter (Black)

Pros: It does work, but has major flaws.

Cons: Embarrassingly bad soldering. USB connectors sometimes refuse to let go of cables.

Other Thoughts: The first thing that happened was this hub refused to let go of an Apple Lightning cable. Then, one by one, the ports started to go out. The clue was when the blue LED on each port would flicker as the cable was moved. Now, I've been an electrical engineer for over 20 years and I can spot bad soldering from a mile away.

I opened this thing up, extracted my Lightning cable, and inspected the soldering. It was amazingly bad. The obvious thing is that they intentionally used about a quarter of the solder that they should have. There were no solder fillets, and many of the holes on the through-hole pins were only half filled. I re-soldered all of the pins.

Next, I tested the Lightning cable in the other ports, and of the 7 ports, 6 of them would not release the cable. I then stretched out the "fingers" that retain the cable. Now it properly lets go of the cable, although to the surprise of nobody it is a little more loose than I'd like.

I can only recommend this hub to people with the courage, talent, and patience to open it up and re-solder all of the pins. I only bothered to open it up because at this point my Lightning cable was more valuable than this thing.
