Discrete Amp Configuration for High Sound Quality

Discrete Amp Configuration for High Sound Quality

This AV receiver was designed with a strong focus on achieving exceptionally high sound clarity. It employs a discrete amp configuration and a low jitter PLL circuit, which contribute to its excellent audio performance.

4K Pass-Through for Next Generation Super High Resolution Images

4K Pass-through for Next Generation Super High Resolution Images

This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. While not yet available, 4K displays and sources are sure to become popular in the future. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display for image clarity far beyond present standards.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop.

*All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.

YPAO™ Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup

YPAO™ Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup

YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It’s like having a professional installer calibrate your system.

USB Digital Connection for iPod® and iPhone® on the Front Panel

USB Digital Connection for iPod

A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod or iPhone, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod / iPhone is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the device's music playback functions.

SCENE for One-Touch Start

SCENE for One-touch Start

Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.

Surround Realism HD Audio with CINEMA DSP

Surround Realism HD Audio with CINEMA DSP

Yamaha’s exclusive CINEMA DSP technology supports playback of HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc.), providing natural and expansive sound imaging.

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

Adaptive Dynamic Range Control (DRC)

Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.

Dolby TrueHD

Dolby TrueHD

Dolby® TrueHD is Dolby's next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, unlocking the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. When coupled with high-definition video, Dolby TrueHD offers an unprecedented home theater experience that lets you enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture.

DTS-HD® featured products have the ability to decode all streams required for DTS-HD Master Audio™ but may have limitations in channel output and/or sampling frequency; or may utilize unique post processing.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. With the ability to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray Disc player, DVD player or AV receiver and a video monitor, such as a High-Definition Television (HDTV), over a single cable.

Depending on the model of product, HDMI can support standard, enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It can support all currently-available compressed audio formats (such as Dolby Digital and DTS) and most newer HDMI devices can support lossless digital audio formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

(View the specifications of each product for details on HDMI compatibility.)

4K Pass-Through

4K Pass-Through

4K pass-through receives super high-def resolution video and passes it to a 4K compatible monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.

Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects from ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater! The decoding circuitry performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES (DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1), DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24 decoding with extreme accuracy, as well as all digital sound field processing.

SILENT CINEMA makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones! This is a variation of CINEMA DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

Compressed Music Enhancer

Compressed Music Enhancer

Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

SCENE – A New Level of Operation Ease

Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for DVD viewing, disc listening, TV viewing and radio listening. Pressing a SCENE button automatically launches a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod listening, XM listening, TV sports viewing and action game playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by changing Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use or they can replace the original default settings. The SCENE names can be changed, too.

YPAO Automatic System Calibration

YPAO Automatic System Calibration

Yamaha’s YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc., until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room - and you don't have to do anything!

ECO Mode

Pros: When it works, it's great.

Cons: Right after one year very light usage, probably turned on/off twice per week, it's broken. Everything from HDMI 1 channel is pink, and other hdmi channels are just black. Bypassed it everything works fine so clearly the receiver is no longer working.

Other Thoughts: Poor reliability, not recommended to anyone.

4 out of 5 eggsImpressive sound and performance for a value priced receiver!

Pros: Sound quality and volume output is great for my 5.1 system. I can easily blast the sound louder than I'd want to without deafening myself and it still sounds clear. It has a plethora of different optimization settings which seem helpful.

There's even a setting which helps to improve the sound quality/ambiance in sound that has been compressed (such as mp3's). MP3's seems noticeably livelier with this setting enabled. Like that it has a jack on the front, and easily useable buttons and knobs, many connections in back. Looks very sleek.

Cons: The optical volume seems a bit quiet from some devices. May just be a limitation of older optical technology. Switched those devices over to HDMI instead which worked flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: I'd highly recommend this receiver!! For my modest priced 5.1 setup I don't think a pricier model (got it on sale under $200) would have given me any noticeable benefit.

I've got most of my devices hooked up with HDMI except for broadcast TV which I have connected with optical seeing as my slightly older HDTV doesn't have HDMI out.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a deal!

Pros: Low price, lots of features, adjustable EQ per speaker, on-screen menus make adjustments easy, 4k and 3d passthrough, HDMI control (for supported components), and again THE PRICE

Cons: For a sub-$200 receiver I can't complain about anything. Power isn't incredibly high, but if your speakers require more you shouldn't even be looking in this range. The only thing I didn't like was the YPAO setup. I manually configured everything to my liking and then tried the YPAO to see what it came up with. I followed the instructions to the letter and the result was increasing the surround speakers and subwoofer to the maximum and decrease the fronts and center channel significantly. Pretty strange results but I manually reconfigured and everything is just right.

The only other minor thing is the overall EQ is pretty weak. Just treble and bass adjustments. Like I said before, there are EQ settings for each channel that have a fair amount more adjustment, but the addition of even just a midrange adjustment would be nice for a quick adjustment.

Other Thoughts: I replaced a trusty old receiver that's served me for decades. It only had a single analog (6 RCA jacks) 5.1 input which I fed from a HTPC (3.5mm to RCA cables) so it served alright. I was just looking to remove some wire clutter and have something I can control via remote but didn't want to spend a lot of money.

I have this thing powering a pair of Polk Monitor 50 fronts, CS1 center, Monitor 40 rears and the sub-out to a PSW505. It has enough power to make listening uncomfortably loud while remaining clarity so normal movie-watching levels are no problem whatsoever. Setting custom input labels and

Pros: I was surprised at the depth of the setup meu. You can get the sound you want out of this amp. It does not have any limitations that I can find. I bought it from Newegg as a refurb for 154. I am very happy with it and the sound options... and yes. It sounds great with a good 5.1 speaker system... and all the power you'll need.

Cons: Hooking up speakers and peripherals is always a hassle... the connections are standard, not magical.

Other Thoughts: nice

1 out of 5 eggsWorked Briefly

Pros: Good features for the price, plenty of inputs.

Cons: No HDMI pass-through when off, will not pass analog video through, and non-intuitive menus/settings.

Worked for a short while, after adjusting HDMI settings- sounded great with surround. All sound output quit after a few days actually sing it on only a few movies and shows. Numerous factory resets, trying all variations of HDMI and sound settings, other speakers (Bose and Paradigm) and no sound output- even with the internal FM radio receiver. The HDMI video will still pass through, but again no sound with it. Tried to troubleshoot this for quite a while as sound only worked initially after needing to change HDMI settings, thought maybe I was missing something, but will be sending it back to Yamaha. Will see how well it goes. Very disappointed to get a lemon.

5 out of 5 eggsLots of options

Pros: very loud for my 20'x24' theater room,
easy to setup,
lots of music options (prologic, surround sound, stereo only, etc)
full hookups for speaker wire surround system.
HDMI passthrough is very high quality.

Cons: i am not well versed with all the receivers to explain the pros/cons position.
it doesn't have bluetooth?
doesn't have rca hookups for 5.1 (but i have cheap speakers)
doesn't have a way to rename the channels
doesn't have the time displayed

Other Thoughts: i was looking for a receiver that would play pandora off my phone into the whole house: Mission Accomplished!
I bought a Bluetooth gateway and stereo jack to rca then ran it into audio 1. Sound is awesome with two tower speakers and a center channel.

I have a Playstation 3 hooked up also, BUT i like playing with my wireless headsets. It is to save my wife from hearing constant run-fire, bombs, and narration updates. However, when she is off shopping and i am playing with the house to myself.... THAT'S RIGHT- you guessed it!!!! i can feel the bombs going off in the subwoofer.

as for the received it's self, it has not over heated, or given me issues.
Setup was easy.... I just turned it on... scrolled to the input i wanted, and then started playing with the many sound variants. i can make the audio output sound like a concert, or hall, or just stereo, or 5.1 or 2.1, or set the type of music (jazz, rock, games, music, etc)

overall i am impressed. a few things i wish it did... display time or custom channel text. it just sits on "AUDIO1" when it is playing music, and HDMI1 when i playing PS3

4 out of 5 eggsGreat deal, some caveats

Pros: I have an older model, the RX-V367, which is pretty great.
Great sound, lots of hdmi/digital inputs, easy to use.
This model adds audio codecs, usb ports, and 4k support.
Lot of bang for your buck.

Cons: Yamaha (and many other) receivers use a cheap mechanical rotary encoder for the volume knob. This stops working after a couple of years when the lubricant gets filed with metal bits, or the contacts don't contact any more. This will almost certainly happen with this model, since rotary encoders are better than pots till they fail, and optical or magnetic rotary encoders are way more expensive than mechanical.
Bottom line: if you don't lose the remote, you are fine. Just use the remote after the volume knob fails.

Other Thoughts: As noted, I actually have a prior model. This has features that are very tempting for me to upgrade, especially at the price.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great until it fails

Pros: Sets up easily, Can be manually balanced if you are patient, but automatic mode with the included microphone is dead easy.

Cons: HDMI output died after 6 weeks! Now that I own it, is see the recent reviews with this same problem. Perhaps a bad batch, but still very frustrating.

Other Thoughts: Buy the extended warranty and save your shipping box.
