Total Purity Concept for the Finest Sound Quality

The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive-amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, and anti-vibration technology. All models have a fully discrete power amplifier that helps to minimize distortion. They also adopt independent pure power supplies, employing dedicated power supplies to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. The anti-vibration heatsinks are designed to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise on certain models. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality.

Extensive Audio Codec and Format Support

This AV receiver is compatible with many audio formats such as Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™. They are also compatible with FLAC/WAV 192kHz playback. Enjoy excellent sound quality from Blu-ray™ and other types of high resolution sources.

Intelligent Amp Assign

Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. For example, in a 7.1-channel system, when Zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back-channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two front presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there's no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the receiver – one more way Yamaha makes your life a little easier.

4K Pass-through and Upscaling Supports Latest High Resolution Video Formats

This AV receiver's HDMI input/output supports 4K video image pass-through. It can also perform 4K upscaling to boost a lower resolution image to super high-def resolution. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3-dimensional signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable.

High Quality Video Processing with Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing

In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges. This causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally.

SCENE for One-touch Start

Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV; plus, you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver's remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop.

*All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.

AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV Receiver

This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means they can accept wireless music streaming from an iPod® touch, iPhone® or iPad®, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computers on your home theater system. View metadata such as song title and artist name as well as album art* via the on-screen display.

*Some models don't support album art display.

AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation

This AV receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller app that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Google Play to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes, and operate other functions from an iPhone® or Android device. You'll also find as many as 23* different languages and a customizable interface for hiding unused icons and renaming functions. A tablet version is also available.

*As of Spring 2013.

Network Functions

This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet radio, Pandora®, and Rhapsody®, and operate your system via WebBrowser Control. The AV Controller app (from iTunes App Store or Google Play) lets you control various functions from your iPod®, iPhone®, iPad® or Android devices.

MHL® (Mobile High-Definition Link) Support for High Quality Video and Audio

MHL provides easy, direct connection of compatible mobile phones and this AV receiver. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phones is supported. The receiver also charges the connected phone. Play, Stop and other basic operations can be controlled from the remote control.

USB Digital Connection for iPod®, iPhone® and iPad® on the Front Panel

A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions.

Advanced Multi-language GUI On-screen Display

Yamaha's latest graphical user interface has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable status bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI provides a choice of eight languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese, and can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures.

YPAO-R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) Sound Optimization

YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.

HDMI Front Panel Input

In addition to the large number of HDMI inputs on the rear panel, there is also one on the front panel. This gives you a convenient way to quickly plug in a digital camera or camcorder for highest quality pictures.

Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode

When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source on the monitor (Blu-ray Disc™ player, game console, etc.) can be changed via the remote control. There's no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources.

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker

CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

Dialogue Lift and Dialogue Level Adjustment for Natural Dialogue and Vocals

Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)

Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen - everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you don't want to disturb others.

New Virtual CINEMA DSP for 7.1-channel Surround Sound

New Virtual CINEMA DSP provides virtual 7.1-channel surround sound from only front speakers (2.1-channel), with no need for rear speakers. Using new 24 kHz HRTF (Head-related Transfer Function) technology, it creates a rear sound field that is extremely spacious, natural and powerful.

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

ECO Mode Lowers Power Consumption by 20 Percent*

Yamaha’s new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20 percent. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu.

*Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement).

Selectable Auto Power Down

Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after two, four, eight or 12 hours.

Low Standby Power Consumption

Yamaha makes its receivers eco-friendly with a low standby power consumption of 0.1W in IR Standby mode (3W in HDMI Standby Through mode, 3W in Network Standby mode).

Connection for YWA-10 Wi-Fi Adapter

This AV receiver provides a DC-out connection for the YWA-10 Wi-Fi adapter (optional accessory). This lets you stream music wirelessly via a router from network components such as a PC or NAS.

Connection for YBA-11 Bluetooth® Wireless Adapter

This AV receiver provides a DC-out connection for the YBA-11 Bluetooth wireless adapter (optional accessory). Stream music wirelessly from a Bluetooth-capable smartphone, tablet or PC without a Wi-Fi environment.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V475 5.1 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Very easy to use, sounds great, has more connectivity than you'll ever need at this price point. I like that it's not restricted to HDMI-only.

The "scene" buttons are really handy, especially if you have HDMI components that can receive remote commands (CEC). I've set up my PS3 and Sony Bravia XBR9 to turn on when using the "BD/DVD" scene. Perhaps the only drawback is that the cats sometimes step on the remote and turn on the TV by accident. Supports 24 Hz playback from my PS3 to the TV.

The Android/iPhone controller app is very nice! Lets you choose the DSP modes, inputs and such. Most useful when using the Network Radio feature, to select one of the bazillion available stations.

Has the option to select a different analog or digital audio input to replace the audio on an HDMI stream. Invaluable when you connect a laptop/PC using a DVI to HDMI cable, and have the laptop audio brought in on one of the analog stereo inputs.

YPAO is super easy to use. Plug in the included mic, position it near the listening location, and press "start".

The pass-through to the TV is very handy, for when I want to watch some TV without needing to turn on the amplifier.

Airplay audio is nice and easy to use. Works well with the girlfriend's Macbook Pro and iPhone. No video support though.

Cons: The on-screen UI looks very dated. The UI is not resolution-independent, and is simply displayed 1:1. This means that the menus look large when overlaid on a 480i stream, and tiny at 1080p. In all modes, the UI is not as slick as you'd expect from a 2013-era piece of electronics. Having said that, it is functional, and gets the job done. Most of the time, I prefer to use the Android control app instead.

The Android app doesn't take advantage of a tablet screen. It's optimized for phones. Not sure if the iPad version is the same (I don't own one).

The Pandora support is nice, but the setup process is quite tedious. I like that you can set up more than one profile. Would have been nicer if you could select those profiles with the TV turned off (with the remote, or with the iPhone app)

I'm completely puzzled why you need to create a login on some Yamaha website before the Network Radio will remember favorites.

The remote control is very cluttered, lots of little tiny buttons. Thankfully, the volume buttons are large. When sending commands to my PS3 (menu navigation), the remote is laggy. The PS3 remote feels a lot snappier.

Other Thoughts: Bought to replace an old Onkyo that had no HDMI support. I am driving a Polk Audio Monitor 45 front, CS2 center and TSi-100 rears.

Haven't tested the MHL functionality, since I don't have an appropriate cable.

Wish it supported Bluetooth audio streaming.

The girlfriend finds it very easy to use. The scene buttons and iPhone remote play a large role. Yamaha has stumbled on something great here.

2 out of 5 eggsFun for the first couple months.

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V475 5.1 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: lots of features for the price. I especially like FLAC support.

Cons: I've had it less than 3 months and the HDMI video out seems to have spontaneously died.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good receiver with useful features

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V475 5.1 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Exceptionally easy to use for having so many features. The Scene buttons are an excellent innovation. The logically organized remote allows easy access to lots and lots of features. Easy to hook up, and the sound is excellent. The option to rename the connection on the front panel of the receiver is great. Connectors and controls are high quality and feel like they'll last. Built-in AirPort for connecting with devices running iTunes.

Cons: Wired-to-wifi networking is not always reliable. I did not get the Yamaha wifi add-on, and instead connect with Cat5 to my GigE wired network. this works, but the network software is not that refined. Not a big problem, because there are so many other ways to connect.

The apps for ipad and iphone both only partially work-- when connection to a device drops, it's difficult to start again, and sometimes the apps can'y see the receiver. I have used the AirPort on the receiver, but that has a hard time with dropped connections too. I successfully browsed to my computer sound library, but only once.

Other Thoughts: I bought this receiver to upgrade an ancient surround receiver with no HDMI. This has 4 HDMI in and it's a whole new experience. I can play music from my phone or ipad right through the airport connection, and I can plug devices into the USB port on the front panel. Playing sounds from other sources through this receiver is simple, easy to control, and the sound quality is superb.

One slight downside is "reconnects" through the HDMI. When I turn on the TV, for instance, even if I'm not tuned to the TV, the sound drops for as much as 5-10 seconds. This is annoying, but not overly so.

I am running mostly 2.1 stereo, with a DVD/CD player, the cable box, and Apple TV. The sound off the cable box is mostly surround (on the HD channels), and this receiver handles it flawlessly. I'll admit, this receiver is used most as the speaker system for my iphone, using AirPort. When the AirPort connection drops on the receiver, it's easy for me to switch over to the AirPort on the AppleTV, and play that through the HDMI connection. If you're planning to use this mostly for wireless AirPort connection to iDevices, I definitely recommend purchasing the Yamaha WiFi addon.

For me the test for success with this purchase was "spousal acceptance," and that's been great. The scene buttons, with their simultaneous settings of audio source, video source, DSP settiings (if any) and audio levels is great, and you can even name the setting on the front panel. Played through Orb speakers, front and center, with Cambridge Soundworks dipole rear surrounds and a PSB subwoofer the sound is superb. Using YPAO for setup is a snap. For the price, this receiver is a very good deal, and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to 11/8

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V475 5.1 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Update to my previous review.

Forgot one thing. The speed of the internal processor in this thing that runs the Internet Radio lists, DLNA Server music file listings, etc. seems Much [like 2.5x] faster than the RX-Vx73-series. (I had the 573 before it turned out to have a broken ground-path)

This makes interacting with it more fun and easy with long lists.

Cons: No more as of now.

4 out of 5 eggsImproves on Yamaha's Previous Issues

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V475 5.1 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Sounds great.

Solves the old Yamaha problem of their "Natural Sound Receiver" sounding like a bland, lifeless, soulless, uninteresting, morbid, bleak, heartless, blaaaahhhh... zzzzzzzzZZZzzz.

I have an RX-V series from awhile back and this 475 positively SPARKLES in-comparison.

Everything is better. Mids, Trebles, Clarity, DSP programs, power, dimension, calibration, directional-atmospherics.

Got pretty good results with YPAO Room-Mic every time. I felt no need to EQ manually. I do bump up the center-channel volume sometimes, though.

SCENE buttons Very convenient

DSP:
*Chamber, Cellar Club and The Bottom Line are all pretty useful for actual music, if you like a small bit of echo. They're really not that bad.
*Sheer number of DSP programs is just Great! An embarrassment of riches.
*A.DRC+DSP+Enhancer frequently make sources sound quite a bit better than they are dry.

Sound on headphones is great, even for big, epic movies. Plenty of power in headphone amp for serious-quality cans. -Even drives a set of old 1 Million Ohm AKGs

No word on durability, but if history is any guide, my previous Yamaha is still running great after 15 years! -An N-A-DElectronics 705 of the same vintage had to go to the shop 2x so far!

Except for a few silly mistakes in the UX, the Controller App is really good. You would have paid Thousands for something like that even just a few years ago. -Running this amp on an iPad is really a lot of fun.

Back Panel: Thank You, Yamaha! Right now, I'm working in a mixed-source environment. And Yamaha is one of the few that doesn't say, "HDMI OR NOTHING!" -That is just a godsend that they still give you a full-range.

Thank you Again for HDMI-Passthrough! -Just in-case for some insane reason I wouldn't want the sound coming out of this thing.

USB power on the back is a nice touch.

Rating: I would give it more than just 4 eggs if I had more experience with its direct price-competitors. Even with my limited knowledge, other brands will probably have a tough time keeping-up. -Especially in Bang-for-the-buck-ratio.

Cons: Minor Point: Tone Controls are abit out of the way. -But the thing sounds so good you hardly need them.

DSP
*Not sure what good "Hall In Munich"/Vienna/Roxy are quite good-for.
*Some of the programs still need a little refinement, those 3 included
*-Especially as far as music-listening goes.

Universal remote "Forgets" command-set. (yes my FW is current as-of today)
Ex: If you have assigned DVD to SCENE I, but you were on SCENE II when you last powered-off, and you hit SCENE I to power-up and switch-channels, you will Also then have to hit the AV key for the appropriate input to get the Universal Remote to send the right commands to the DVD.

-Ie: A User-Process-Flow-Event Duplication.

It should be Implicit and Automatic that if you hit the SCENE button, it should also load the codeset of the source you've assigned.

-The UR will also "Lose" the last codeset if you go to change either "Option" or "Setup" in the middle of playing back that source.

You have to go hit the appropriate AV key for it once you've fiddled with whatever setting.

Controller App:
*Does not have "Direct" in the DSP panel, where it probably should be.
*Does not display "Setup" or "Options" on the iPhone/iPad's screen ; you have to look at the silly little screen on the amp and use this numpty little "side-app" called "Remote". -Dumb.
*(music)"Server" Needs a Fast Scroll/Bracket by Alphabetical Title Feature; ie: A, B, C, etc. -esp. for large libraries.

Internet Radio REALLY needs a "Last-Played-Station(s)" memory-slot, because there are like 4 Billion Internet Radio Stations.

"Enhancer" is not properly-calibrated for Voice (especially low-register voices), and sounds frankly DISTURBING for things like Dialogue or Talk-Radio. LLLUUUUUKKE... LLLUUUUUUKKE... I am your...

No lights or glow-in-the-dark on the remote, so it's easy to miss a key & accidentally launch a Saturn 5 rocket when you just wanted to un-pause.

Mixing/Upscaling
*It is a "Dumb" switch, as far as Video goes.
*I would like the ability to send All Video over 1 output-to-monitor wire.
*As it stands, Yamahas only upscale 480i, everything else just gets "dumb-switched" or passed-through.
*So, it really does no composite-component-hdmi mixdown
*Not necessarily a Yamaha-specific point, but allegedly All In-Receiver Video Upscaling is utter garbage unless you buy something costing $3k; -and maybe still then, too. That is sad.

Yamaha Ethernet to Wifi Adapter Pricey. Just get the Wifi-N ioGear instead.

Shame you have to spend so much more to get 2 HDMI outs, in-case you have a panel and a projector, etc.
