5 out of 5 eggsSounded Great right out of the box . . .

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V675 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: This was a Christmas gift for a friend planned by his wife for me to figure it out and install. After being a Pioneer man for decades, I chose this. It has many of the newer features/apps that most of the upper level units have these days plus On-screen Display all the time. Set up is easy. Their version of the mic that comes with it and auto-set up program is quick and easy although it was not necessary when I set this up. With the Free Polk 5.1 speaker system that came with this, the whole thing sounded amazing, billion fold better than my Pioneer system with $25k of custom studio speakers. To say the least, I am very disappointed in my system now.

One feature I love is that you can change the when off "pass-through" device by selecting whichever one you want on the remote without turning on the AVR or making settings changes. Pretty clever. The interaction between their Sharp TV and this unit is great. the ARC (Audio Return Channel) works great and interacts nicely when the AVR is off and the TV is being used alone, it's as if the AVR never existed. Overall a great deal for a great piece of equipment.

Cons: There are four preset buttons on the AVR and the remote that are set to do what they want you to do without being able to change them. What they offer are limited and I could do without them and the space they take up. Th remote has small buttons with even smaller labels.

Other Thoughts: As a whole nice piece of gear. Nice enough to make me very disappointed in my "far superior" (sic) system. Which is making me take a new serious look at Yamaha, of which was my brand of choice before Pioneer.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Impressed So Far

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V675 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: I like the robust feature set this receiver has. I primarily purchased it due to the analog to digital processing, making it possible to run just a single HDMI cord to my TV even with legacy devices like a GameCube and Wii plugged in. I love the sound it produces most of the time (more on that in a minute). I also like that it supports MHL on the front panel (and that there is HDMI and USB ports on the front panel) which makes plugging in my phone or iPod super easy., and the music equalizers/effects

Cons: I have had this receiver since October and it hasn't worked right the whole time. I have a constant hum/static from one channel, and if you crank the volume up to movie watching level (-30 to -25db) the unit will shut off and say "CHECK SP WIRES." I have been through the ringer with Yamaha customer service, which is terrible. They told me to spend my own money and time to take the receiver to a repair shop 40 minutes away at which the NPFed my unit and I spent more time and money bringing a still broken unit home. I am then told they will exchange the unit with a new one, only after I box mine up and send it in. That's not how an RMA should be handled, I should be sent a replacement unit FIRST.

In the meantime, I will just plug in my old Yamaha RX-V367 to use while I wait for 2 weeks on a new unit. Oh wait, I bought this RX-V675 to replace that one because the HDMI ports quit working after 2 years.

So far my taste of Yamaha is pretty sour, and their customer service department is incredibly unwilling to do anything that might improve that. Needless to say next time I spend $650 on a receiver it will NOT be a Yamaha.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure the network features are wonderful, but I have yet to use any. When I am in a more permanent location I will network it up to find out. The idea of an App for a remote sounds good, as does DLNA support. The receiver truly does do more than I will probably ever know, and the on screen interface is simple to navigate. I love the way it sounds, but I look forward to receiving a unit that actually lets me turn it up to test at true movie-watching (ie: ground shaking) volume levels.
