2 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this for 4k. Problems abound

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Two eggs cause the unit overall is great for the basic home theater. Plays great. Good GUI as needed.

Cons: When paired with a brand new sony 65" 4K tv and the Sony 4K media player, that's where the problems arise. To watch the 4k content from the media player with no loss, the media player needs to run an hdmi straight to the tv's hdmi input 4 for video. For audio, the sony player has an audio hdmi out that is recommended to plug into your receiver's hdmi input.
Here's the problems. No audio from the receiver at all with the 4k. UNLESS you switch the inputs on the receiver using the remote about 10-12 times. Then, like magic, audio.
Done? No. Halfway through a 4k movie (after you have finally gotten the sound working) the receiver shuts itself off. Typically this can happen as a built in fault protector. After checking every speaker and speaker wire. No faults found. (Plus everything works perfect with cable and bluray hdmi).
So, there is something wrong with this receiver not dealing with the 4k system.
As a note, I have an older sony receiver ES series that works fine with 4k passing thru. I just thought it was time to "upgrade" to a specific 4k advertised model.

Other Thoughts: I would love to give this receiver 5 eggs as it handles everything else great. But 4k not so much. I'd steer clear of this one if you are looking for a 4k capable unit.
If through my own fault, something is amiss, I will edit this review.

4 out of 5 eggsYamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: YPAO set up, Zone 2 separate program capability, power pass through, Android A/V controller app, will call pickup.

Cons: No printed manual, tiny/confusing remote buttons, wonky remote button component assignment, dual banana plug not compatible. Net radio UI awkward. 1000 channels but limited genres.

Other Thoughts: I have been watching this unit for months waiting for a price drop. Finally saw it as a 24 hour Egg Blast for $449 and rushed to purchase. This is replacing an 8 year old Onkyo 7.1 receiver which has served me well and will power an outdoor patio system.
The YPAO works well to get up and running. Still tweaking but my Polk Monitor 50 mains, PSW12 sub, RM7 surrounds, and RM7 center speakers (all purchased from New Egg) have never sounded better. The room is only 10'x15' with knotty pine walls, deep pile carpet, a couch and easy chair. I have aurelex bass traps in the corners and some small aurelex tiles on the walls. My zone 2 speakers are in the kitchen and are old 2 way Radio Shack (made by KLH) book shelfs.
Will probably replace these soon with some Polk Atrium4s.
The Android a/v app is really sweet. Using my home network I can control the DSP, volume, and signal source for both zones. I love being able to let the kids watch TV in the den while I blast music stored on my Note 10.1 2014 tablet or Pandora in the kitchen while I cook. With the press of the "Party" function the 2 zones can be united.
I felt I had to take away 1 egg for the "Cons" listed. Still am very happy with the purchase and would recommend this unit, especially at this price point, most highly.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Network Receiver

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Network capability is great. The android app and web control feature are nice. For home automation, there is an Eventghost plugin on Github that works with this receiver. I use this receiver mainly through Zone 2 for whole house audio distribution.

Cons: Not much. You have to remember that hitting the Power Button does not shut off the Zone 2 amplifier, but that is nitpicking.

Other Thoughts: Bought this an an upgrade from an Onkyo TX-SR604 - HDMI board failure. What a substantial improvement in sound quality with this Yamaha receiver.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Excellent receiver. Relatively straightforward to setup. I use it in two zones. The microphone calibration worked far better than the one in the previous Yamaha receiver I had (about 7 years old. The room is large with high ceilings and is acoustically live. Video pass through is flawless, and the up-scaling is excellent.

Cons: None. Great features for the price.

Other Thoughts: Recommended. You won't go wrong with this receiver.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!!

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: All the features this thing is packed with are great! Great price and great quality product! Easy to set up and very user friendly. Sounds great and works great and great price on sale for $450

Cons: No paper manual. It has a rom disc from which you can easily print it. I would use a very thin paper and normal quality settings on the printer.

Other Thoughts: I did a lot of research before I bought this to make sure it would work well with my new pioneer speakers and sub. I does have a 6 ohm function as well as the default 8 ohm. I knew exactly what to expect from this reciver and it is every bit as I expected and more. Also the ypao function works superbly to give you a quick quality setting and is very accurate! You can go into the manual speaker set up later and define your eq with 7 points on each individual speaker! The eq has a very good visual program on screen that makes setting it a snap for anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsYes, great deal for me...

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Too many options to list. The one thing I'm impressed the most with is the Surround, playing nice with my Sharp TV, puts the sound down on Pioneer, Kenwood, Vega, and Mirage. Internet has no lag, wireless performance #1 without lag pulling playlists from my server located on the same level in another room. I am more than impressed with this purchase upgrading another Yamaha Pro Logic from 1989. Can't be happier, truly top of the line IMO.

Cons: Control buttons small but hey, the system rocks big time. The on screen graphics make up for it.

Other Thoughts: Shopped for cheaper stuff but this was on sale and I'm glad I choose a better product because this thing does everything but walk the dog. I am thrilled with the bass response, options and sound pumping 7 channels in my studio. Clear crisp decoding, no humming, all digital. Got to love it, Yamaha got this right.

5 out of 5 eggsToo much to handle...

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: I feel a bit overwhelmed by this machine. So many features and options that I think I only use 25% of them. I love it! Awesome power paired with my polk audio speakers. I may have this thing for the next decade.

Cons: Only hiccup is the Pandora app. It randomly says I don't have internet connection to access Pandora....Problem is that all other web streaming works AND I selected Pandora with the web app. Not worth knocking an egg off because I may have done something wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good Product

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: Feature rich receiver with great sound. Yamaha and Onkyo are the only two manufactures I found that still provide component and composite audio/video cable connections. So your old VCR, DVD and TV are still usable. Alsio provides 7 HDMI ports for newer gear. My impression is this product is designed to allow migration from old technologies to newer ones. Yamaha tech support was very helpful with some wiring and set-up questions I had. Newegg's pricing of this product is excellent.

Cons: This receiver has so many features it is a bit overwelming. The remote is not terrible, but could have been designed and labeled better. The wireless feature and on-screen set-up capability only work if you have a HDMI connected TV. Same with other features, only work if you utilize the HDMI connections for your devices. Yamaha does not provide a printed owners manual, a disk is provided. While you can print the document from the disc, it is a hassle.

Other Thoughts: I am very happy with this purchase. This receiver allows me to use my old equipment and replace it with new as it breaks, with out upgrading the receiver again. The installation was time consuming but easy to do, if you followed directions. I had no problems getting the wireless feature to work. This is my second purchase from Newegg and both have exceeded my expectations. The pricing on this unit was very good. (Its actually on sale for a better price now.) I asked for the Egg saver shipping available, (standard ground, 4-8 business days) and received the product in 2 days.

4 out of 5 eggsGood with minor issues that make it less than great

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: - Sound quality
- Airplay
- HDMI switching and pass through with power off
- Can be controlled by iOS devices

Cons: - Internet radio is awkward to set up and use
- Wireless adapter is really just a generic wireless bridge with a very awkward UI
- No encoding of component video over HDMI
- Remote has many small buttons of questionable utility
- iPhone app has poor UI - not well thought out for size of screen, but iPad is a bit better
- DLNA support is limited to audio formats
- airplay is audio only

Other Thoughts: This is a really nice amplifier that suffers from a bit of featuritis. There are lots of little features that look good when reading a spec sheet, but that are really unlikely to be used by most customers. For example, how many people are using an amp in this price range to bi-amp speakers, or to power front presence speakers (at the expense of rear surrounds)? Yamaha could win over more customers if they spent their effort on a well thought out remote and a nice on-screen UI. (Yes, things have improved over what they offered 6 or 7 years ago, but it still looks like ugly compared to a modern Apple or Samsung device.)

Despite those complaints, I'm happy to give them credit for getting the most important things right. The sound quality is really nice. The 7 channel stereo (2 channel spread over 7) is really nicely implemented, and HDMI pass through and switching while the receiver is off is great.

I don't regret getting the product; it's just a bit frustrating that they missed some opportunities to make the user experience as beautiful as the listening experience.
