It senses automatically the lower quality air, and it switches to the higher speed. Once air quality has improved, it automatically switches to the normal setting. Absolutely love this. This cleans up the air so my CPAP seems to stay clean longer. The air in my bedroom smells cleaner. Cons: The filter indicator lights are waaaay bright.
