3 out of 5 eggsGood addition to your Emergency Preparedness Kit

Pros: -- The flashlight is REALLY blindingly bright! It has 3 settings: Bright, blinding, and flashing (though only one color -- I have another flashlight that flashes red so that would be more use while on the road.
-- AM and FM radio in addition to the weather radio so that you can get more information related to what is going around you than just the weather.
-- This will charge your smartphone though it is only rated at 2000 mAh so save that for if you really need it.
-- This has a patch cable so you can also play your smartphone through the speaker.
-- The Solar power piece is a GREAT THING because the hand crank is not great (especially if you are a lefty.
-- Size -- very compact. It is about the size of 2 larger cell phones stacked together so you can store it in your purse, car, or aforementioned emergency kit without taking up too much space.

Cons: -- The aforementioned hand crank is only useful if EVERYTHING ELSE has failed you. If you have no sunlight, your battery packs are all tapped out and all you have left is the ability to turn a crank, this will do in an absolute emergency.
-- speaker quality is terrible. There are LOTS of compact speakers out there smaller than this that sound better. But hey, this is supposed to be for news and not high-fidelity music listening so I can see where tradeoffs are made. Plus, I'm sure a better speaker would require more power.
-- if it ever not charged up, all memory is lost -- the time, the radio stations, everything so you have to reprogram.
-- using it is non-intuitive. Make sure you read the manual BEFORE you read it to make sure you know how to use it in an emergency.

Other Thoughts: While the weather radio aspect is nice -- to me the best features are the flashlight, the ability to charge and play your smartphone through the device because frankly, you are going to find out more about the world from the internet or streaming TV or Radio (particularly true if you are in an area where the radio reception is not great) than through a weather radio... particularly if your emergency is not weather related.

My recommendation would be to have a battery pack that is capable of keeping your cell phone or tablet charged and using this for the flashlight and speaker capability. Also, since this charges off a USB cable, you can use your battery pack to keep this charged as well if you don't have sunlight and/or you are just plain tired of cranking away!

This is a handy device to have in your emergency kit -- but it is definitely not the only thing. Still stock up on battery packs (10000 mAh would be great for prolonged power outages or times when you anticipate being without power for several hours).
