Product Description LG's Optimus series continues apace with the L3, a budget smart phone with a distinctive look and a full suite of Android features. Design Part of the "L" series of budget smartphones, the L3 looks a little, well, squarer than most mobile phones. Not as all-out square as Motorola's Flipout, but certainly not as long as your average touchscreen smartphone. That said, it's a sleek-looking affair with a panel of glass covering all of the glossy black front and surrounded by chrome-look trim. Beneath the screen is a single raised home button, but nestling secretively on either side are touch-sensitive back and menu buttons that light up when you touch them. It feels solid and sturdy too and generally gives the impression of a more expensive phone. The 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen is big enough to do the business -- you just don't get that widescreen effect when you turn it on its side. It's not the sharpest, with a resolution of 240x320 pixels, but it's nice and bright when you need it to be. In use however, it's not really as sensitive as it should be -- if you're used to playing with HTC handsets for example, it will come as a bit of a rude awakening that you often have to tap several times to get it to take notice of your intentions. Software and performance Android 2.3.6 is the operating system of choice and given the budget aspirations of the L3, there's no guarantee that it will receive an upgrade to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich anytime soon. It has a single-core 800MHz processor backed by 384MB of RAM -- a little larger than we'd have expected at this price, but then again, it didn't really perform as well as it might. AnTuTu performance benchmark tests gave it 2,335 -- not great, and though it comes in above the HTC Explorer for instance, it's well behind HTC's Sensation phones. The 3-megapixel camera starts up quickly however and offers a range of basic picture modes as well as autofocus and digital zoom, but no fancy smile- or face-detection features, and no flash. Picture quality is so-so with okay colour balance and detail for the spec, though it struggles to take good snaps in anything but ideal lighting conditions. (Check out some sample photographs in our gallery.) There's no microSD card supplied to top up the not too shabby 1GB of onboard memory, but you can add your own cards up to 32GB if you like. The 1,540mAh battery puts up a good fight, delivering a good day and a half of fairly heavy use. Conclusion The LG L3 is a budget phone with delusions of grandeur, its sleek good looks are backed up by a goodly range of Android features. Unfortunately it's let down by its unresponsive screen and slower than expected processor.
