The drive cannot be connected via eSATA and USB 3.0 ports at the same time. If both cables are connected, eSATA connection will be detected by computer with the USB connection acts to be as power supply.

eSATA is used for data transfer only that will not power the drive. You must use the USB cable for power up and may need to connect both USB cable plugs to your computer for large data transfers.

Make sure to undock the drive from your computer Operating System before unplugging it to avoid data corruption.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Value for the Money

Pros: I have only just received my enclosure and I have tested it and it works, maybe not quite as smoothly as videos located elsewhere might show. I don't think the instructions are adequate for the USB 3.0 Y-cable, meaning there is no mention of when to use the USB 2.0 (white) connector end of the Y-cable. I have experience with this type of cable from other enclosures so this isn't all that bad for me but others may not be as fortunate. Read/Write speeds were impressive on my old SATA-II machine using USB 3.0 speed test with a Vertex 2 120GB SSD. I was able to get 199MB Read and 207MB Write speeds which puzzles me because I have never had the Writes be faster than the Reads. I am pleased with the enclosure and its price. I love the "no tools required" enclosure and it is hard to beat the price when on sale!

Cons: Weak USB 3.0 "B" connector (This is not necessarily a fault of this enclosure but ALL USB 3.0 "B" connectors on 'portable' devices.)

Other Thoughts: I think the pluses out number the minuses on this device. In hind sight, I wish I had ordered a couple more at the sale price!

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but!

Pros: I do like these for the mere convenience, and have 2
Easy to change hard drive, Greatest design I have seen, metal rejects heat
Esata works on all computers I have connected (about 10)
USB 3 not always recognized, especially at boot! Have to take off an egg from my previous review!

Cons: About 1 in 5 (20%) will not recognized by USB 3.0 port even at boot.
Will still work on USB 2.0 port.
Still a great design!

2 out of 5 eggsBEWARE!

Pros: When it worked it was great- fast, quick connecting.

Cons: Then the internal USB 3.0 connector started wobbling around. Within a few days it broke off completely and is inside the enclosure.

Other Thoughts: I gave this enclosure a 2-star rating because when it worked it was great (5 stars) until I found out that the USB connector is extremely flimsy. I used this drive on multiple machines and often connected to several machines every day. I used the esata connector for data and the USB connector cable's power-only 'pig-tail' connector to supply the power to the drive. I never swapped out the drive I originally put in the enclosure. It worked flawlessly from Feb 2013 until Nov 2013. Then I started having problems with the USB cable not making contact at the enclosure end. If I moved it slightly it would work sometimes. Gradually it got to the point where the connector was flopping around when I tried to plug the cable on. Then today it just broke off. If there had been another power option like some external enclosures have with a 5V jack I could have continued using it but even then I would be afraid of the metal of the broken USB jack shorting out something inside the enclosure.
I went to the manufacturer's web site and after searching a while found the warranty request page. I will try to update this review if/when they respond. Before this happened I would have given this enclosure 5 stars.

1 out of 5 eggsfragile USB3 socket

Pros: early solution for manufacturers that abandon eSata despite retaining same model number, so one can still avoid the protocol translation overhead.

Cons: after 6 months with weekly insertion and removal of supplied USB3+power cable, USB3 socket came apart with 2 SMC chips. As USB connection is needed to power a 150mW Intel 320 SSD (as enclosure is eSATA, not eSATAp) and no option for adapter, this was a major drawback. No replacement option available from Newegg.

Other Thoughts: Unless vendor offers solution, I'll verify compliance with Modified EIA-364-1000.01 Test Group 7 sections 3 to 6, possibly sending the enclosure to USB IF for advice.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks, cheap. Open button, push down.

Pros: Works. Comes with all the cables you need.
Esata. Usb 2.0/3.0 split y-cable.
Usb powers it self esata does not.
No need for extra power supply.
Cheap, slick!

Cons: Cables usb 3.0 flat cable needs teeth trimmed down.
Pin internal and external are fragile. Usb powers itself esata does not.
Swing arm is flimsy. Push the open button down slowly then slide it open!
Also the swing arm is a hard drive release pry.
Open loaded drive slowly.

Other Thoughts: I had to flatten the prong teeth on the 3.0 cable so it slides smoothly. They should have used a powered esata. Oh well. Its great for travel and matches my Macbook pro.
Fits a needed product line well. Comes in black.

5 out of 5 eggsRemember, push button then slide first Daniel-San.

Pros: Matches my Macbookpro.
Comes with all the cable you beed usb 2.0/3.0 split wire and esata.
Bilingual instruction Mandarin/Chinese and English.
Cheap for this niche 3.0usb/esata.
ESATA powered of split usb cable.
Usb 2.0/3.0 powers itself.
No driver need for Mac or PC works instantly!

Cons: Door latch swing weak remember to push down slow and slide it back to open Daniel-san.
Usb SS 3.0 has fangs that needed pressing down. Not meant for hot-swap could break any data pin inside or out.
No powered ESATA. ESATA powered of usb split cable.
Drive latch acts as pry so be careful opening loaded drive Daniel-San.

Other Thoughts: I love cheap tech from China...not because it is cheap. If seagate or western digital made this $20 bucks more i would have still bought it. I like this product because it fit a niche i was looking for.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Very stable. I switched over to an ssd on my laptop and am using this enclosure with easyBCD to boot over esata. Win7 does not like booting over usb2.0 without some modifications

Booted and ran it for about 6 hours without the system ever lagging or dropping the connection. Much better than my old enclosure.

Cons: None really, see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I would have liked the enclosure better if it used powered esata (eSATAp). I found a drive online that uses a combo eSATAp with usb3.0, but I don't think that is an official standard.
Having both the eSATAp and an USB slot taken up is a bit annoying.
