5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy

This review is from: ORICO 2588US-BK Tool Free 2.5” SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: Had the sata->usb chip in my WD passport elite fail. Found this external enclosure as a replacement to fix my problem. The hard drive fits nice and snug in the case and also seems pretty durable.

Cons: None, Great case!

Other Thoughts: I actually prefer this case over the oem WD case!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent enclosures

This review is from: ORICO 2588US-BK Tool Free 2.5” SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: The tool-less design of these is fantastic, and the cover is pretty solid given that it is largely made of plastic.

Cons: The case can be difficult to get open, because there is nothing to actually push/pull on to slide it open.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased several of these for making use of old laptop drives that I have accumulated over time, and overall, I have had no real problems with them.

Once they are closed, they are quite solid, but getting them back open (especially when they have a drive in them) is a little more difficult than I would prefer. My recommendation to the manufacturer would be to put some sort of rough spot (raised bumps or something) on the cover so that you can more easily slide it off.

4 out of 5 eggsSturdy but Hard to Open

This review is from: ORICO 2588US-BK Tool Free 2.5” SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: Solidly constructed compared to a couple of flimsy ones we've had.

Cons: Hard to open the case - it's a tight fit.

Other Thoughts: As usual with these small external cases the USB cable is only a few inches long.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product.

This review is from: ORICO 2588US-BK Tool Free 2.5” SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: This is an excellent product, that is very simple to operate, assemble and use. It has worked great for converting my 2.5" hdds pulled from laptops in need of an upgrade into fully functioning external drives. As soon as the hdd has been removed from the laptop/desktop or packaging it takes seconds to install and put to use. It also came in handy when I needed to wipe an ssd before selling it... saved me having to take apart my desktop or laptop to do so. I currently have 3 of these stacked on top of my desktop as extra storage.

Cons: The cable used to connect it is fairly short, though this can also be a positive (it's maybe a foot long).

1 out of 5 eggsIt's a free inclusion for a reason

This review is from: ORICO 2588US-BK Tool Free 2.5” SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: It worked for a test.

Cons: Wow, is this thing poorly designed. The installation is easy, but the performance is abysmal. I wouldn't trust it to run any important drive.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy it. I cannot stress this enough. It was testing at about half of USB 2.0 theoretical read/write speed, when an SSD was installed. Combine that with C- grade construction, and you've got a recipe for disaster. Do not waste your money.

3 out of 5 eggsOrico 2588US 2.5" Ext HDD Enclosure USB 2.0

This review is from: ORICO 2588US-BK Tool Free 2.5” SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: - Tool-Free Setup
- Sturdy construction
- Comes with miniUSB to USB 2.0 Adapter Cable.
- Plug-n-Play
- No other power supply required
- USB 2.0 only

Cons: - Plastic Body with no Heat Conductors to keep Drive Cool
- No Ventilation Ports to allow Heat Dissipation
- No Temperature Monitoring Capability
- Expensive for a 2.5" Drive Enclosure (if you have to pay for it)

Other Thoughts: I received this Orico 2.5" Drive Enclosure for free as part of a promotion when I bought another item from Newegg. I stashed it away with other miscellaneous parts since I don't use USB 2.0 anymore for storage since it is slow compared to esata, firewire, or USB 3.0.

Recently, a co-worker let me have a Seagate Black Armor PS110 500GB External HDD that would not work for them. I checked it out and it gave an error reading that the drivers couldn't be loaded for that device. Windows 7 would not recognize the drive ever. After looking on the Seagate website for drivers and not finding them because they were supposed to be in the drive firmware, I decided that the problem was either in the actual HDD or the enclosure. I took the HDD out of the Seagate and put it in this Orico enclosure. Windows 7 immediately recognized the drive and all the information on the drive was accessible.

Read/Write speeds on this HDD in the enclosure were pretty typical of that drive type with USB 2.0. Maximum Read/Write speeds were in the 17-18MBytes/sec range.

The enclosure was easy to use and the drive functioned well. It solved the problem. My biggest concern about this enclosure is that there is no ventilation for the drive and no heat sink to carry the heat away with heavy use. The stock Black Armor enclosure had a full size aluminum heat sink that was attached to the drive. There was also a thermocouple on the stock enclosure to measure temperature. This Orico enclosure is made out of thick sturdy plastic that doesn't conduct heat good. There are no ventilation ports for convective heat transfer either. I can believe that this enclosure would be good for long term heavy drive use. You could slide off the enclosure top cover leaving the HDD exposed for better heat dissipation. That would work if you used this for a semi-permanent horizontal installation. Not for a transportable drive. That is why I took off 2 eggs.

If you just want a way to try to salvage a drive, this enclosure would work. If you just have light usage where you are not using the drive under full load for extended periods of time this enclosure may serve that purpose. If you are concerned about extended drive life or reliability with even medium usage, I would recommend looking for a enclosure with ventilation, and/or a conductive metal heat sink and enclosure.
