2 out of 5 eggsWorked Great - for a while

Pros: This is a nice sized hard drive dock that performs well on USB 3.0!

Cons: Purchased in August of 2013 it worked very nicely until February of 2014.

It seems to run okay in USB 2.0 - But I have 3ea USB 2.0 so why would I keep it for USB 2.0???

The whole point of this HD dock is the USB 3.0.

Symptoms of failure - the drive would occasionally just *drop* in the middle of a job. Then the frequency really picked up! I went to the ORICO site, got into support, found a firmware upgrade, and now it does not stay connected via USB 3.0 for more than 2 minutes time.

I have not bothered to perform additional testing of the 2.0 USB reliability.

It's got to be sent in for warranty service. :-(

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate....

Pros: Exellent

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my December 2013 post; I use this regularly on Windows 8.0 with great results. However, my computer has USB2, not USB3. Not sure what it will do with USB3 on Windows 8 but it is is advertised to support it. From comments I am reading a firmware upgrade may be necessary which is lax on the part of Orico. They are suppose to do this at the factory. Other than that, the two units I own are still going strong, and I am about to order another for a friend.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked perfect Great poduct

Pros: Worked perfect - very easy to plug and play. No problem at all. Ridiculously easy to install and use.

Cons: None at all that I can see.

Other Thoughts: I needed to recover data from two HDs from a couputer that was irrigated. computers do not like irrigation.

Just pushed the HDs into the slot. One at a time and copied all the files I needed.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat after Firmware update.

Pros: Heavy base
USB 3 (after firmware update)

Cons: Does not have USB 3 support for Windows 8 out of the box. Must do a firmware update.

Other Thoughts: Good unit for the price. Not an easy process for firmware update. USB 3 speeds are good after update.

1 out of 5 eggsVery disappoint ed

Pros: None

Cons: Apparently doesn't work with Windows 8. I had to read on here how to update the drivers but I have yet to have success. I understood when purchasing that I would have to update the device, but come on, the instructions are in broke English and the program is not even usable. I normally do not comment rate but I felt I have to warn other on this one.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1 USB 3.0 fix (In (almost) English)

Pros: Cheap, fast, supports 4TB.
Works fine in Windows 8.1 after firmware update. (YMMV, see other thoughts).

Cons: USB 3.0 support for Windows 8.1 is a bit of a hassle.
(It requires software installation and working from a guide with many translation errors/oddities)
See other thoughts for link to US page for firmware update.

-1 Egg because the needed firmware was ready months ago, but my drive came with the old)

-1 Egg because the issue should be mentioned in the overview and specs, not just reviews, an English language download page should be linked, and the guide for the update should feel safer to use than random internet reviews (it doesn't; use both).

Other Thoughts: Here is the US link for the firmware update: http://www.oricoonline.us/drive.aspx?did=45 (Double check your model number) as mentioned elsewhere, Firewire means Firmware in their guide.

The update can be done from a USB 2.0 port in Windows 8.1, or USB 2 or 3 in another OS.

*The software recognized several of my USB drives. I removed all others before clicking RUN ALL, to make sure the tool wouldn’t try to update their firmwares, but that might be unnecessary.

*When browsing for the firmware, you’ll need to change the file types being searched for to .bin or all.

*Make note of the current firmware version before updating to make sure it actually updates.

*Firmware seemed to take immediately, but I power cycled the dock and computer to be safe (as the support is shaky, I figured better to be overly safe).

*For those having trouble after the firmware update, especially if you tried to connect it to as USB 3.0 port in Windows 8.1 before the firmware date, here are a few good tips from “An Honest Reviewer" on a competing site about large, powerful, female warriors (I did not experience these problems).

“…If you encounter any issues after the firmware upgrade, try assigning a unique drive letter to the docking station. For example, I used the letter "Z" to identify mine. This will prevent any conflicts with other usb flash drives that are assigned a drive letter by the OS. You may also want to delete the bad profile (in device manager) that was created when your dock station first failed (when plugged into a usb 3.0 port). To do this, you must first "show hidden devices" in device manager to see the bad profile. Please understand that these last two steps may or may not be necessary. Good luck.”

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It came with the latest firmware. Generally works with USB3 and Win8.0

Cons: It does not work with Sony VAIO SVE1720 USB3 port (WIN 8.0) but only works with its USB 2 port.

Other Thoughts: Not worth to return it as it does work with some PC.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: Price, ease of use and simplicity of design.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This hard drive dock is incredibly handy, especially the USB 3.0 connection. I now keep all my HD movies (Blu ray rips) and DVD's and other large video files on a 3TB internal hard drive which I can now use as a completely external drive and just attach to any computer in my home (2 of 3 are connected to large screen LED/LCD TV's) and watch movies without having to burn them onto disc. Also it is now basically unnecessary to transfer files onto other computers since I can just access them from the (in)external drive via the USB 3.0 connection directly. Just a great accessory to have.
