4 out of 5 eggs13-pin slimline connector NEEDED

Pros: Fit into my silverstone itx case no problem. Not the fastest drive but it is a slim drive. The price was 20 when I bought it last week, shot up to 30 in just a week! Wow.

Cons: 13-pin slimline connector NEEDED! This is not stated by newegg. I have never heard of this until I read a review below because I was stumped. I have never came across a sate 13-pin slimline connector. Regular sata works but you need the slimline to power the drive. Get one with one side having both female connectors attached and the other side of the cable having one that stretches to your sata port and the other, power, going to molex. They are around $5 dollars. ALSO NO MOUNTING SCREWS! They are so tiny, I just used electrical tape hehe, my computer is pretty stationary, plus it fits in my case like a glove.

Other Thoughts: Prepare to buy a $5+ 13-[in slimline connector unless your psu has one (unlikely) and buy the screw separately or tape her down!

5 out of 5 eggsReplaced DVD drive in Inspiron 3000

Pros: Reads DVDs, doesn't complain when asked to take out the trash.

Cons: Probably not sturdy enough to support a Big Gulp. Use as a DVD drive only.

Other Thoughts: Faceplate popped off just fine, plastic was durable enough to not lose any of the latches. Installed the faceplate from the non-working drive with no hassles, mounting bracket threaded metal cylindered on fine, seamless 5 minute install including testing.

Can't use the word "scr_ew" in a review when referring to how the drive was installed. Must resort to calling them threaded metal cylinders.

4 out of 5 eggsOEM Slimline = no hardware and 13-pin slimline connector

Pros: Inexpensive, functional, and fits in a slim drive slot.

The drive itself is exactly what you can expect from low cost, high tech electronics manufacturers. It works beautifully, as long as you are gentle with it and the UPS delivery person doesn't set a case of lead on your package.

The drive is a little slower than 5.25" models, but that is to be expected given the loose mechanisms involved with smaller slides and lighter components.

It is an excellent solution for a limited space case that needs a low usage DVD drive for occasionally installing software, or burning a backup of some specific data.

Cons: No hardware, product pictures limited, specs do not mention the 13-pin slimline connector, Newegg fails for packaging the drive loosely in a bubble wrap mailer.

The mounting screws for the slimline drives are M2 (metric) and typically need to be 2.5-3.5mm in length to prevent interfering with the drive operation. I was fortunate the the high quality Chenbro case I ordered came with the exact bracket and screws that were needed for this drive.

Not so lucky with the 13-pin slimline SATA connector. I had to make a quick trip to a local electronics warehouse to get an appropriate adapter for the back of the drive. However, you can easily order one of these adapters depending on your case/PSU needs: N82E16812200470, N82E16812200980, N82E16812200374, N82E16812400118, or N82E16812200665.

This last one is what made me dock an egg. Newegg should know better. These slimline drives are fragile and they come bulk packaged standing on edge in block foam to keep the from getting banged up. This one arrived in a flimsy bubble wrap mailer. The light gauge sheet-metal at the front left corner of the drive was actually bent and the bezel had been popped out of a snap in slot. I wasn't sure whether the drive would work after its poor packaging by Newegg and mishandling by the shipper.

Fortunately, I was able to gently straighten the sheet metal with a pair of micro-nose pliers and snap the bezel back into place. The drive does work and shouldn't have any difficulty with the little use that it will get.

Other Thoughts: With all due respect, bad packaging does not save anyone money. Factually, the opposite is true. Any broken or damaged components cost both the supplier and the end user both time and money.
