Ubiquiti Networks introduces the Ubiquiti ER-X EdgeRouter X 5-Port Broadband Router, part of the EdgeMAX platform, that combines carrier-class reliability with excellent price-to-performance value in an ultra-compact form factor. This Ubiquiti ER-X EdgeRouter can be powered by an external power adapter or 24V passive PoE input. A passive PoE passthrough option is available to support a single airMAX device.

Powered by a proprietary and intuitive graphical interface, EdgeOS, every Ubiquiti ER-X EdgeRouter X can easily be configured for the routing, security, and management features required to efficiently run your network. For advanced network professionals, an integrated CLI is available for quick and direct access using familiar commands.

5 out of 5 eggsSet it and forget it!

Pros: Easy to configure and deploy. It took me longer to decide if I wanted to power the unit via POE (or not) than it was to configure.

Cons: None thus far.

Other Thoughts: This device replaced a DD-WRT enabled SOHO combination unit (router/switch/ap). Getting this device connected to "The Internets" took little to no time at all, now transferring my DNS Static leases over took the most time. Yeah, configuring this device will seem daunting to novice and intermediate individuals. When in doubt, use the Wizards!

1 out of 5 eggsZero phone support

Pros: Excellent hardware.

Cons: No phone support which is unacceptable for an enterprise class product. When I am onsite with a customer I cannot spend hours waiting for support to email back and forth. I need real time support.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good, and a great find

Pros: - The hardware is great value: powerful MIPS CPU, 256MB flash, 256MB RAM, five GBit ethernet ports
- Runs EdgeOS, based on a fork of Vyatta/Vyos, a Debian Linux distro for enterprise class routers - very feature rich
- Built in 'wizards' for simple use cases e.g. home LAN with NAT, SPI firewall, DHCP
- Bug support for EdgeOS should be far longer than typical consumer router firmware
- Can run other Debian packages, when compatible with existing packages and remaining hardware resources
- Idle power consumption is only one (!) watt
- Only $50 plus shipping at other supplier

Cons: - steep learning curve for more advanced networking use cases, not recommended for networking beginners
- GUI could be more logically organized and use better 'widgets' - the tiny triangles drive me nuts
- non standard PoE support
- it is in very short supply right now, about a three month backlog which accounts for the mostly higher pricing

Other Thoughts: - if required, use with a separate wireless access point that meets your needs
- Hopefully Ubiquity will continue to improve the GUI and make it more 'consumer friendly'. This could evolve into a 'gold standard' for SMB network edge routers.
