4 out of 5 eggsPowerful features and high performance

Pros: Finally, a real router in the house! Was used to replace a 2nd gen 802.11n Airport Extreme base station as the main router. Hooked up to an Arris 820a Docsis 3.0 cable modem with 200Mbit service. Connections are much more consistent and reliable now. Latency in online games is down and video streaming is much more responsive. No issues registering on my ISP's network or any other tomfoolery with compatibility with any other devices on my network. Traffic anaylsis is a plus, as are the multitude of available features. The latest Wizards from Ubiquiti make getting this up and running for web browsing a relatively smooth experience. Responsible for connecting 20+ devices to the Internet and it does so without issue. UPnP functions well, and also has Port Forwarding and NAT capabilities that will allow you to do whatever it is you might need to access wise. Setup is accessible via ethernet and a web browser via HTTPS, so no funky controller software needed or dependency on other connection types. Most configuration changes DO NOT require a reboot, which is awesome!

At the $100 price point you're going to be hard pressed to find something better. This is my first Ubiquiti product and so far I'm quite happy with it.

Cons: Requires an immediate firmware update to become the router you want it to be. QoS features are lacking in the GUI. Setup will be very confusing for anybody coming from a 'normal' home or small office style router. Available documentation is out of date and you'll either A) Need to know how to configure this before installing it, or B) Have another means of accessing the web as you are installing it.

Other Thoughts: There is a larger, PoE version of this router. If you're installing one of these alongside Ubiquiti's UniFi AP's, you'll want to buy that one instead or pair this with one of their PoE switches. This has enough horsepower to handle 1000Mbps ISP connections, but comes with a learning curve. Enabling this to also act as a switch via bridging the LAN side ethernet ports does eat up some CPU, so if you're using this to create an unsegmented LAN and need both ports for it, expect slightly less performance at peak. Reboot times are LONG, so if it appears to be non-functional after a reset or reboot, just wait another couple of minutes and it will come back up.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked great... for 12 hours...

Pros: -Very fast little router while it lasted

Cons: -After about 12 hours of use, it completely died. It is now a useless brick, when I connect it to power it doesn't even go into U-Boot with the serial connection.. except once in a blue moon it manages to start booting the OS, freezing somewhere in the middle of that.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully this is just a one off and the new unit I get from RMA has a longer lifespan than 12 hours. But I see there are some other reviews about the lifespan of this product so I have my doubts, if my replacement works for more than 1 year down the road I might change this review.

5 out of 5 eggsFully featured router at a great price

Pros: Support for multiple subnets
Fully featured DHCP server
Several default SOHO configurations available on companies website

Cons: Many options only available through CLI
Configuring the Firewall requires knowledge

Other Thoughts: This device is strictly a router/gateway and does not have any WiFi on board. Also only has three ports although they can be set it any configuration of LAN/WAN. This is a great unit if you are not afraid to get your feet wet and spend some time getting it configured.

2 out of 5 eggsNice feature set.

Pros: You can do a lot with this router.

Cons: Died after 18 months of use.

Other Thoughts: No. For the price it should be more reliable. Search this product and you will see tons of hardware related issues. It is a shame because I love Ubiquiti's UniFi line of APs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Internet gateway, insanely fast for the price

Pros: -Decreased internet first hop latency by ~23ms under standard leased cable internet gateway equipment with this and SB6190 on Mediacom
-After a weekend evening of beers and learning the vyatta CLI interface, I finally had IPv6 connectivity for the first time!
-Snappy, responsive web interface with nice looking interface bandwidth graphs, slightly less nice looking after firmware upgrade (from line graph to bar graph) after firmware update
-after firmware update, got basic networking up with a login and 3 clicks using the wizard. Basic settings like port forwarding from there are a breeze!
-more features than I care to fully investigate, although I am interested in testing out vpn.
-sturdy metal enclosure with shielded ethernet connectors and a ground lug on the back. Construction was far superior to my expectation considering the price
-searchable forum on Ubiquiti's website where most things have been done and documented really helps to get things connected the right way the first time.

Cons: - I'm still not exactly sure how I got IPv6 working, I'm pretty sure Mediacom uses a 6to4, my interface had a /128 with my internal devices on a /64 (!!? How many ip addresses could I possibly need? I don't run a datacenter in my closet..) It seemed each device in my network got one of the /64 via radvd. I'm pretty keen on IPv4 but not so much on IPv6. What ever happened took overnight to start working, and a call to ISP customer support asking questions about how they have their network configured so I could properly configure mine without guessing how theirs is configured got a reply with the non-free support hotline.. I was told I would receive a phone call but never did, perhaps someone did whatever was needed to "fix it" from their end instead.. I know ipv6 works out of the box when I plug my computer directly into the modem, but NAT is somewhat important to me so I'll need to research this further.

Other Thoughts: 3 ports is more than enough for all but the most extreme networking situations with really ocd technicians who believe ethernet traffic NEEDS to flow through different ports. In layer 3, that isn't always the case though, if you really had to, you can have each device in your network all plugged into the same switch and still not have the outside world connected to your internal network... If you are the ISP for 4 different companies, all with different subnets and port forwarding requirements, this would do fine, unless each of them needs to saturate a 1G pipe, in which case I would be leaning toward the 8 port pro, with BGP required also, I might start considering some legacy Cisco Catalyst stuff that requires a nuclear power plant in your building to keep running.. Food for thought.

2 out of 5 eggsRouter

Pros: Works really well when it works

Cons: When it doesn't - like 1-2 months after the warranty and it dies. This is the 2nd one we've replaced and only did so to get the shop running. We will find a better and more suitable replacement.

4 out of 5 eggsEdgeOS v1.7.0

Pros: For a 100 bones you get a lot of router for little money. This router suports:

* 8021.Q VLANs (via Web UI)
* In/Out/Local Packet filters (via Web UI)
* NAT (via Web UI)
* SNAT (via Web UI)
* DNAT (via Web UI)
* Port Forwarding ( via Web UI)
* DHCP Server that supports multiple subnets
* CLI access to configure the above and much, much more

Cons: If you are not a tinkerer, you might not like this device.

It takes more than a surface understanding of network filtering and network services to benefit from this device.

You will spend days if not weeks (depending on how complex your setup) getting this up and running if your setup is more complex than the "SOHO Example" on the Ubiquiti site.

Other Thoughts: I took me a few days to configure (I'm using VLANs and complex filter rules), but the Ubiquiti community was a great help.

Even though this was a real head scratcher to configure correctly, I would buy another if I had to.

To get you up and running quickly for a simple setup just google "EdgeMAX - SOHO Example"

5 out of 5 eggsNot as complex as others have said

Pros: Sleek design and lots of power in a small box. My internet immediately felt snappier compared to the Comcast box we had doing our routing. With newer firmware setup was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I was up and running in 20 minutes.

Cons: If networking if foreign to you and CLI is scary you should still stay away. If normal routers are like point and shoot cameras then this is like a DSLR. Powerful but complex enough that you may be better off with something simpler.

Other Thoughts: Ubiquiti has a good community out there. This setup lacks wireless, and a lot of ports. But I got a $25 TPLink switch with 8 ports and 2 WAPs.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Cheap Hardware - Get what you pay for

Pros: This router has lots of capabilities.

Cons: The hardware is very cheap. The software has many issues, features that don't work 100%, or just fail on a regular basis. I've had this router for 15 months. It has completely failed (bricked) 4 times. Ubiquiti has a problem with the memory they use, very cheap. 1st time I reset the router via the web page, that cause the usb storage to be completely scrambled, requiring a wipe and reload the OS. The 2nd and 3rd times it just stopped and both times it required a complete OS wipe and reload. This last time again it just stopped, but unlike the previous failures the storage has completely failed, its trash now.

Other Thoughts: I have used this device as a firewall, nothing strange, updated the firmware after OS corruption 3 times and its been well ventilated. Other are now reporting that the USB chip Ubiquiti use for the device storage are failing a lot.

This not a reliable product. If you search the web you'll find many people using these devices for small businesses, but they are replacing them 3 and 4 times per site, because of device storage issues.

***** Stay away from Edgemax Lite3 *****

Looking for a replacement for the dead edgemax lite 3 I have now, which is 15 months old.
