5 out of 5 eggsBest switch ever

Pros: I absolutely love the click mounting system. It's versatile and way easier than trying to measure two screw holes out.
I mounted this under my desk so I can use the two powered USB ports to charge my phone and kindle and free up ports on the PC.
Included cable straps are a nice addition

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Haven't used the web management yet, just plugged it in and started using it.

5 out of 5 eggsGood switch, Meh Charger

Pros: Works great as a network switch
Works without the management software that comes on the disk
Fast gigabit will max out pretty much any connection
Included mounting bracket and low profile makes cable management easy.
Power is a single plug, not a brick so it won't take up a lot of outlet real estate.
Dark color makes it easy to hide under/behind desk

Cons: Extra blank space on plug takes up useless space in comparison to other switches
Low amp USB plugs makes charging slow
USB plus don't have data connectivity for NAS

Other Thoughts: The software for managing the switch is alright, however I've found it to function just fine with a plug n' and play approach. The interface is clean and smooth.

It's really nice for managing a big or small network that requires a hub. I currently have 3 devices plugged into it and it serves up data no problem. It hides up against the wall without fail.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: -Good aesthetics.
-Mount works well.
-I like the power connector, you can orient it in two directions.

Cons: - It keeps restarting every few seconds and unable to upgrade the firmware. Netgear utility detects it but won't do anything else. I'm kinda disappointed with netgear, I haven't had problems with their products before. Their quality control seems to be going down the drain. Makes you wonder why newegg has 100% positive reviews while more recent reviews from other websites aren't very good.

Other Thoughts: -I took the upc off days before I started using it so I can't return it and it's not worth shipping it to netgear for the warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsRound 2

Pros: Great mounting options
Small size
Great price
Basic management and VLAN support

Cons: Issues with ProSAFE and Firmware upgrade
No LAG support (I thought it had this when I bought it. That is on the GSS116E)

Other Thoughts: 1. Firmware update – Credit to NetGear Forums for most of the parts, summary missing.
a. Download latest ProSAFE and firmware for GSS108E to PC/Laptop
i. Unzip both
ii. Install ProSAFE
b. Connect directly to the switch from PC or laptop. No Router or other Switch between.
i. Hard set PC / Laptop to IP in set subnet as switch.
ii. Switch default IP 192.168.0.239 if you have not changed it or connected to a DHCP server (home network router). Default IP assumed for examples.
c. Run ProSAFE
i. Refresh to find switch, verify it is in the same IP subnet as PC.
ii. Follow prompt for firmware update.
d. If this fails.
i. Download or get a command line tftp server.
1. Linux: from command prompt (CentOS example)
a. Su root
b. yum install tftp
ii. Open up Command Prompt in admin mode for window or su root for Linux.
iii. Add switch IP and MAC to arp table (as reported from ProSAFE or look at the box for the MAC)
1. Add fixed arp entry to arp table
a. arp –s 192.168.0.239 xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
2. Note syntax if different for Linux and Windows for how the MAC address is entered. Windows 10 wants dashes. Linux can be “:” or not separator depending on distribution, check help arp –h.
iv. Windows: Retry ProsSAFE. Failed for me
v. Linux Command Line tftp: Push firmware to switch, Linux CentOS example
1. tftf –v –m binary 192.168.0.239 –c put /home/user/Downloads/GSS108E_V1.0.0.1/GSS108E_V1.0.0.1.bin
2. Note the –m binary transfer mode is required.
I had no luck with the ProSAFE or GUI based tftp server/client, I had to go command line.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch, this is the one you want!

Pros: 2 amp usb ports
power cord can rotate 90 degrees (plugs in either way)
zero configuration required, but can be managed by web interface
small for having integrated power supply
tons of mounting options via the locking bracket included

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Perfect for concealment in our omnimount floating wall shelf, allowed us to eliminate all of the ethernet cables running from equipment to original switch. As a bonus, I saw improved speeds over our old gigabit switch!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat quality, easy to use

Pros: value, footprint, design, fast setup, works out of the box, mounts anywhere, loads of features at a super cheap price, great quality and warranty. It has auto uplink capability on all of its ports, so you can plug in an internet or external network easily. fanless design, quiet with little heat despite having the power supply integrated

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: get this switch

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Switch

Pros: One of the bigger pros of this switch is that it has a built in power brick. So that when you go to look for a plug to plug it into there is not a giant wall wart size needed on the power strip or outlet. Why more don't do this is beyond me.

Another interesting feature is that it has two usb power outlets. It was particularly handy for me because i used them to power my phones wireless charging pad and my tablet dock. While it would be nice if they were two amp usb plugs it is a nice feature that I would like to see more of.

As far as the switch functions goes it works great. There is no difference between being plugged into the router and the switch performance wise.

There are also loads of features for the switch. One of the nicer ones is the QoS settings that you can use in the online interface.

Another good feature is the click mounting system. It makes putting the switch out of site and mounting it exponentially easier.

Cons: The requirement to install 3rd party apps to get the online interface to work. They required you to install PopCap and Adobe Air to use the online interface to manage the QoS and other smart features.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a fantastic switch for the features that it provides. I would like to have seen 2 amp usb plugs and no additional software needed to manage the switch via web interface. Those two things do not really take away from the switch enough for me to rate it down. It is a great switch and should be seen as one. I would recommend it to someone looking for a switch with these specific features.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice switch with some managed functions.

Pros: - The Netgear 8-port Gigabit “Click” Switch (GSS108E) is one of the newest Netgear products.
- The shipping time from Newegg was expeditious and the switch arrived undamaged and well packed.
- Weighting about .94 lb, the switch is made of hardened plastic and feels well-built.
- Web base interface allows access and control of multiple "Smart" functions such as:
- Port control (disable individual ports, enable flow control, loop detection, disable LED lights for individual ports).
- Monitoring (port statistics, mirroring and cable testing function).
Multicast.
- Link Aggregation (LAG) allows for "bundling" of 2 ports into one "linked" port and theoretically doubling the speed. This comes useful for NAS users, etc.
- Ability to set up VLANs.
- QoS (Rate limit and Broadcast Filtering).

Cons: - The installation of the software on my Win 10 Pro machine went OK but it required installation of additional software (PopCap and Adobe Air).
- Once installed, the configuration utility was able to detect the switch on the network but most functions were grayed out and were unavailable. Only available function was enable/disable DHCP mode. If DHCP mode is disabled, then you are also able to manually set Gateway address, Subnet and IP address. Once you adjust the IP setting to match your network, you are able to access managed ("smart") functions through the web interface.

Other Thoughts: - The switch is solidly built out of hardened plastic material that feels very sturdy.
- The power supply is built into the switch meaning the power plug will not occupy 2 slots on the power strip. The switch is long, thin in height and depth, allowing for easy placement and concealment anywhere.
- After running some initial tests and setup, I med the switch to my family room where I hid it behind the TV stand. This switch replaced 16 port Netgear switch (model GSS116E). I attached the plastic mounting strip to the back of stand and then simply clicked in and locked the switch in. Instead of using screws, it’s also possible to use included Velcro strips. I then wired my XBOX 360, a Blu Ray player, a smart TV and Apple TV to it. I then watched videos and movies on Netflix and other "Prime" streaming service. The switch performed without a hitch with video streaming at HD resolutions. I never had any problems with the switch. I was a "set up and forget" experience. The switch performs remarkably well.
- This switch does not have built in hardware firewall. While this switch is capable of assigning internal IP addresses (DHCP) and would work with simple internet modems, I would not recommend using this switch without a hardware router or a hardware firewall. Even simple routers have hardware firewall offering at least some degree of protection from internet snoops.
- This switch is perfect for home and small office user. The switch offers several useful "smart “networking functions that many users will appreciate. Other "managed switch" functions found in more advanced switches are not included. Most notably, the switch is missing POE (power over Ethernet) ports. IP cameras are becoming more prevalent in many home/small office settings and it would be nice to see 2 powered Ethernet ports on this switch.
The switch does include 2 USB charging ports (10 W per port, 15 W max together). The power output was sufficient to charge iPhone and an iPad a the same time.
- Surprisingly, the switch did not get hot, even with multiple devices attached to it and charging and iPod and iPhone.
The switch/router market is crowded with thousands of products and picking a right product to fit our needs for a right price is not an easy task.
- In the end, the performance of Netgear PrSAFE GSS108E switch will not disappoint. The switch offers solid Gigabit performance, a set of "smart" management functions, low power use, easy setup and concealment not to mention limited Lifetime Warranty and Limited Lifetime Support backed by Netgear. If you are looking for a switch that offers great performance and easy installation/portability, then GSS108E will not disappoint you.

4 out of 5 eggsGood and Wonky

Pros: Packaging: recycled materials and recyclable materials
• Mounting bracket: attach to wall with screws or Velcro straps – very nice!
• Decent length power cord
• No networking issues encountered during testing.
• Transfer speeds are excellent and comparable with other switches used
• Design: long and “thin” (this could be a con to you) saves some space when mounted.
• Led lights are bright and easy to identify.
• Power supply integrated with the unit; no awkward or clumsy “brick” or oversized plug.
• USB charging ports

Cons: Product weight is too light to stay in-place. See other thoughts.
• Design: long and “thin” (this could be a pro to you) is not ideal for placing item on a desk or table.

Other Thoughts: • Item is very lightweight (less than a pound), to the point of being too light. If you do not mount the product, it may lean or even topple over depending on how you hang your wires. I found it annoying; move one wire and the whole unit moves too. This is the difference between plastic and metal.
• USB charging ports are interesting addition, however, my switch is with my server where I do not have a need to charge anything. With that said, if you were to put the switch in an accessible location, you could use the ports.
• I tested this unit for over a month and found it to be very reliable and a fast performer. I run a small business with 14 computers and many other devices, that are wired and wireless. For my setup, I prefer to place my switches on my server desk (think standing-desk with multiple shelves), but NOT mounted. It just didn’t work for my setup. I have a metal 16-port switch that simply will not slide around compared to this unit that will not stay put. I could mount it, but it would be awkward and would require some weird configuration. For this, I had to ding one egg.

5 out of 5 eggsHeavy Duty, with USB Charging!

Pros: This switch can be mounted anywhere, simple installation! Nice heavy duty feel to it, with a metal enclosure, and weighs just over 2lbs. The user interface is not overly complicated with extra options, and has some very useful features to choose from.

My router recognized it immediately and it was assigned an address automatically, and worked with numerous devices without my having to log-in to the settings GUI.

The two built in USB charging ports are very handy, and are placed on the front of the device for easy access, this is a very nice extra built in feature!

The GUI can be accessed with your browser to select additional options for managing and customizing the switch for your specific network. Built in tools for management, maintenance and monitoring. One that I found very useful was Port Statistics, and the Cable Tester which is nice for troubleshooting your network connections, and even shows the length of your wires.

I found that I did not need to use the Pro Safe Plus Utility as all settings can be managed through a browser as long as you know the assigned IP Address for the switch! This switch does have a MAC address so it can be configured with an address through your router. This way you will always be able to access it with a simple bookmark.

Has first release firmware V1.0.0.0 installed.

Updated version of Pro Safe Plus Configuration Utility is available for download from their site, v2.3.5.

When installing this Utility, it will also install WinPcap and Adobe Air, so if you prefer to keep your operating system clean, just access the GUI with your browser!

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: This switch can be used right out of the box to expand your network connections without having to set anything up!

For more advanced settings the user GUI is very simple to use!

Most will find this switch very useful one way or another!
