4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Easy to setup and take apart, more room than I would ever need, and the fans and leds work fine.

Cons: The wheel to change the hue likes to skip back to purple if not careful. For me, it's not an issue

Other Thoughts: Great case for any build to fit in, would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a full tower case

5 out of 5 eggsA great investment.

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: The cosmetic features on this chassis are a sight to behold. This case will please both minimalist and enthusiast builder. The HUE lighting is a big plus, being most cases do not have the color change feature. Mounting space for plenty of aftermarket fans. (10 total, counting push/pull H110 radiator)
Can fit just about any board out there. Bottom HD cage is removable to allow for 3 intake fans. A nice add-on is the inner pivoting mount for a 120 or 140mm fan. 9 expansion slots for whatever you may want to throw at it. Comes apart fairly easy. Fan controller is 15w with 4 channels, each spliced into 3 3-pin fan connectors.

Cons: None as of yet.

1 out of 5 eggsBUYER BEWARE!!!

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: cool design, cool lights, lots of room.

Cons: may not work, difficult customer service when trying to resolve issues

Other Thoughts: I am one unhappy customer. I am not sure that I have ever been so disappointed and frustrated by a company. What I went through is unbelievable and disgusting. The lights on my case did not work properly. Whenever I would try to turn them on, most of the time they would just flash and cut of. On very rare occasions I could get them to turn on, but if I pressed the i/o lights button or tried to switch between inside and outside lights, they would cut off again I contacted tech support and had to wait weeks to get a part that didn't even fix the problem. I was sent a hue control knob and buttons. This did not solve the problem. I responded back that this did not work and I had to wait weeks to get a response back using multiple tickets because some of my support tickets were ignored. Then when I finally did get through I had to wait weeks to get another set of parts. This time I was sent another hue control knob and buttons, plus a non functioning fan controller with visible signs of damage. I did not have a problem with my fan controller so I do not know why they sent me one. My problem was with the led lights that refused to work properly. Neither one of these items solved the problem of the lights not working. The part that I needed was the circuit board that the led lights plugged into. They sent me everything except what I needed. I had this case for 3 months without a resolution to the problem. That should not ever have to happen to anybody. Finally frustration took over. I wanted this case badly enough that I just bought another case rather than deal with more incompetence. The good news is that the new case I bought works, but that is still $260 down the drain. If you are like me and absolutely must have this style of case then buy at your own risk but be prepared for some serious shenanigans. If this style of case and case lights is not that important then I would absolutely advise you to steer clear of this case. I cannot ever recommend this, knowing what I went through and I would be happy to never do business with this company again. If you don’t need this, don’t buy it. Others have had problems. I guess I will scrap the original case.

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing is a giant

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Fell in love with this thing the second I took it out of the box. Theres enough room in this thing to go 4 way sli, an aftermarket cooler, and much more and you'll still have plenty of room to spare. Bought this case to last me multiple builds and I think it'll do just that.

Cons: Only problem I had was the cables for the case came really tangled up and required a LOT of management. Also this thing is really unfriendly towards non-modular psu's (then again though, what cases are friendly towards them?)

3 out of 5 eggsLooks great, few complaints.

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Mainly giving this 3 eggs for looks and its size. Plenty of room/airflow and looks really great with custom light wheel. Cable management is fairly good if you take the time to do it. I like the I/O panel light in the rear, very helpful in finding your ports.

Cons: When I received mine the dust filter in the front of the case had come off its bracket and was freely rattling around, I had to tip the case upside down and take the front off to get at it. The side panels are somewhat difficult to take off compared to other cases I've owned, if you're not careful you could scratch the case removing them. Also, not sure if this is supposed to be like this or not, but the front door on mine doesn't seem to close all the way. The side where you open it is not flush with the rest of the front, so the line/curvature of the front panel does not line up. Bothers me a little but not enough to send the whole thing back, especially since it's already together and looking good.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm happy with the case, regardless of my review and complaints, as most of the flaws are minor.

5 out of 5 eggsOne Seriously Good Case

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: So much to say about this case. Four big fans circulate tons of air and are whisper quiet. I chose to plug them in to the fan controller, which works very nicely. It runs off of a Molex and you can set four fan channels, each with up to 3 fans, to one of four speeds or off. The back panel lighting is such a nice feature, and I like the removable hard drive cage (I put the included fastener kit in there).

Aside from the sheer beauty and style of this case, I can’t describe how much the integrated HUE lighting adds to the appearance and appeal. It runs off of the same SATA string that powers my hard drives and I can change it to pretty much any color I want, which is good, because I want a different color pretty much every day. Any liquid cooling setup would look right at home in this case. The appearance matches perfectly to my M65 white mouse (not a coincidence) and the NZXT HALE90 V2 power supply (that’s probably also not a coincidence).

This is a case for your next build, and the next two or three after that.

Cons: I do have a few criticisms of this case. The headphone and microphone jacks are WAY too close to the power button. Also I reset my computer while trying to change the fan speed. I like the little black cover over the USB ports, and it stays in place when nothing’s plugged in, but I would have liked for it to be attached or hinged some way, so that I don’t lose it (it actually looks nice when it’s on). Red, green, or blue HUE colors are very bright and brilliant, but all the other colors are dim and washed out. I believe this is just the nature of the LEDs that are integrated.

It’s nice that this case has 4 UBS 2.0s and a card reader, but I only have 2 headers on my board. The card reader needs work. It doesn't slide in nicely or "click" to lock (I just kind of shove it in), and the door can’t close with a card in, even though the slot on the door makes it look that way. Also, the NZXT hard drive trays are just kind of lame in that they’re soft plastic and aren't really rigid or secure without a 3.5" drive installed.

Other Thoughts: I would have liked if NZXT had put holes in the fastener case, then I could just pop it into an available hard drive tray and not have it slide around. (It still fits, however. I may drill holes in it myself.) The screws probably won’t fall out. Also, the fastener case has a lid that pops open very abruptly, after you pull hard. You need to take care in opening it, lest all your thumbscrews fly all over the floor. The standoffs in this box are only needed for big boards, however, as the 9 required for an ATX motherboard are already installed. None of the annoyances are enough to knock more than half an egg off, though, as it is still an outstanding case.

2 out of 5 eggsPhantom 820 Review

This review is from: NZXT Phantom 820 Series CA-PH820-W1 White Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing. Sharp angles and rounded edges. Definitely a conversation piece. Plenty of room, and build experience was very easy. Steel cabinet was very solid, and did not bend (with exception of the side panels). Cable routing is very well done. Airflow was more than adequate, and the inside of the case was cool throughout operation. Plenty of fan configurations, and stock fans were of adequate size and pulled plenty of air into and out of the case. Fan filters are some of the best I've ever seen on a case, and do what filters should do, which is trap dust and keep it out of your case.

Cons: The disappointment began when the bottom front fan filter fastener switch broke during the first two weeks of ownership; however, it didn't pose much of a problem as the filter fit quite snug into the cabinet.

The second instance occurred on removal of the optical drive in order to remove the front panel filter. Pieces of the panel came apart around the housing of the optical player. Again, it didn't seem to pose a significant problem, as the player wasn't any worse for wear, and there didn't seem to be a gap worth noticing.

Yet another instance was the front lower corners of both side panels would warp, and not fit in-line with the side of the case. Indeed, the corners would have to be bent back, or else a very sharp metal edge would protrude on the corner. Several times, these corners had to be bent back down by rolling them inward. The side panels never seemed to create a good seal from the moment the case was taken out of the box, and this was very disappointing.

The final straw came when the fan controller failed. None of the case fans turned. I unplugged the rear fan first, and then upon power up, the fans turned again. Shutting down the computer and plugging the rear fan to the controller immediately caused failure for all fans upon system power up. Fan controller is not stable and all of the lights were blinking very dimly, and flashing faintly. I found no shorts in the wire, and the connections appeared to be snug. I'm perplexed as to why this issue occurred at all.

Other Thoughts: My experience with this case has ended in disappointment. It is clear that a lot of careful planning went into the case, and accessories. The little case with all of the case screws and such was a very nice touch. The case is very nice to look at, and when it works, it does a very good job.

I'd like to think the case design is adequate, but what is clear, is that while the structural areas of the case are strong, they are strong; and, conversely, where they are weak, it's weak.

While I love the case, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this case. I will be reticent to recommend NZXT to anyone who asks of my experience with one of their cases. I certainly hope others are not having the issues I've had.
