1 out of 5 eggsDS414j

Pros: Reasonably priced.
Easy to set-up.
Great user interface.

Cons: Failed within one month.
Slow to wake from sleep mode.

Other Thoughts: Quality Control is slipping with Synology. My DS211 still works flawlessly after more than a year, but it was getting full so I decided to upgrade. I spent two days transferring data and configuring the DS414j. Seemed a bit sluggish, but I figured it was due to all the transferring, etc. After about a week running on my bench, it seemed to be working fine, so I decided to move it to the data closet. Shut down via GUI without an issue. Once moved, I powered up and unit and had only the Blinking Power Light. After reviewing forums, I saw this was a known issue. Tried the recovery methods listed, but it seemed the motherboard had failed. Thank goodness for Newegg's return policy. I'll wait a while before trying another DS to see if the bugs are worked out. Very frustrating!

3 out of 5 eggsSoftware leaves a lot to be desired

Pros: Seems to work once set up.

Cons: Setting up the system was overly complicated.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this several months ago. The one I purchased is not exactly the same but I assume the software is identical. I populated it with 4 2TB drives and proceeded to try and get it connected. I tried using the quick start option and it forced me to use the hybrid RAID. I did not want to give up that much storage since I have the data backed up on another device. It took me a while to find the option to choose the set up I wanted. That was not a big deal. The major problem occurred when I tried to map the drives. It took me 4 days looking on line to find out what the problem was. There was an option buried in one of the menus that needed to be checked. Why this wasn't enabled by default is beyond me. Who ever was in charge of developing the software should have payed more attention to ease of use and not worrying about having the software be able to do everything including making you coffee in the morning.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy and pleasant

Pros: Runs quietly, took no time to set up, talks nicely to my Macs, and it's got enough power to run a few handy server processes.

Cons: Power cable is shorter than I expected? I haven't had any problems.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet NAS

Pros: Fast. Simple set up, lots of features/apps and quite a lot of versatility in this machine. Nice and quiet, too, I barely even know it's there.

Cons: If you only use it intermittently, it puts the drives fully to sleep. It can be a few seconds for them to spin up, and then respond.

Other Thoughts: The first one I got was DOA. It ran for a few hours and not very well - it was slow and clunky -, and then it died a dying death. Newegg handled the RMA. My other review reflects this.

The Synology Support was very helpful, and responded quickly. To my surprise, the new one was able to resume the set up where the first one had stopped - even though I hadn't made a backup of the configuration, yet.

We'll see how it holds up over time, but the replacement is running so much better I have confidence that it will go the distance.

1 out of 5 eggsFragile

Pros: Easy set up. Nice intuitive interface

Cons: I unboxed it, installed the HDDs and powered on. It started up, began initializing the drives and all was well. I did some basic configuration (hostname, etc.) and left it to work overnight. At some point the power blipped, and the device is bricked.

That seems wacky, because it wasn't doing a firmware upgrade or anything. There was no data on the drives, or even any partitions. All there is is the flashing blue light of doom and an non-responsive "reset" button.

Other Thoughts: I guess I will now see how competent their tech support is, but I imagine this will require a return and refund.

Given how easily this thing fell over and died, I'm actually a little hesitant to put actual data on it.
