Maximus VII Hero: Your 2014 ROG Upgrade!

Last year's Hero smashed onto the PC gamer and enthusiast builder scene – easily the most popular ROG board to date! It goes without saying then that 2014's Maximus VII Hero would have a lot to live up to. So, thankfully, it's had a huge upgrade and a big splash of cool design. Have a look at this:

ASUS Motherboard

The sharp aesthetic design is drawn throughout its creation; from painted, matte black PCB to the heatsink, to the (optionally) illuminated Z97 heatsink. The keen-eyed will also notice no more white clips as the whole board is now totally red and black!

ASUS Motherboard

The Hero supports all current Intel 4th Generation (Haswell, Haswell-refresh) and future 5th Generation (Broadwell) CPUs on LGA1150. The Extreme Engine DIGI+ III hardware includes 8 + 2-phase power, NexFET™ Power Block MOSFET, 60A Ferrite Chokes, and 10K Black Metallic Capacitors to make overclocking a cinch.

On the memory front there's support for four DDR3 DIMMS up to and beyond 3,200MHz, depending on what kit you choose to pair it with.

ASUS Motherboard

Within its price-range it's also the only board with rear bracing/heatspreaders for the VRMs, too!

ASUS Motherboard

While top-side, the heatsink has a nickel-plated heatpipe cunningly tucked deep into its design to improve cooling.

ASUS Motherboard
ASUS Motherboard

The rear IO features two USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, combination PS2 keyboard and mouse, HDMI out, DVI out, dsub out, USB BIOS Flashback, RJ45 Intel I218V Gigabit Ethernet port with LANGuard (and GameFirst III), S/PDIF out and 6x 3.5mm audio jacks from the SupremeFX 2014.

ASUS Motherboard

In the box there's also a metallic black Q-shield to cover the rear IO.

ASUS Motherboard

The audio front packs SupremeFX 2014. This includes ROG technologies like SupremeFX Shielding over the sound codec, ELNA premium audio capacitors, ELNA premium audio capacitors, DTS Connect, and ROG exclusive enhancements such as Sonic SoundStage, Sonic SenseAmp, Sonic Studio and Sonic Radar II.

ASUS Motherboard

The SupremeFX Shield gets a flash of ROG Redline, too.

The PCI-Express layout is aimed at (most commonly) two-way SLI and CrossFire users with its two, red PCI-Express x16 slots providing 1 x 16 or 2 x 8 from the CPU. If you're using more GPUs, wait for our Computex announcements!

Three open-ended PCI-Express x1 slots, a PCI-Express x16 (x4 electrically) and the M.2 (PCI-E x2) slot are all connected to the Z97 PCH. Note that due to the limitation in number of available Z97 PCI-Express lanes, these PCI-Express lanes are shared. The default setting is Auto Mode, which automatically assigns the PCI-Express lanes, meaning if you install a PCI-Express x4 device into the bottom slot, the system will automatically detect and disable the x1 slots and M.2 slot.

ASUS Motherboard

The red heatsink stripe is extended further along the motherboard PCB.

The M.2 port support PCI-Express x2 devices up to 2280 (80mm long), giving the latest 10Gbps extreme performance. Since it's PCI-Express based it does not eat up one of the eight SATA III ports when used, giving you the maximum storage potential and best performance, all the time.

ASUS Motherboard

Onboard buttons include the usual power, rest, Clear CMOS, MemOK! tester and new Sonic SoundStage switcher and KeyBot on/off.

ASUS Motherboard

Flip the board over, and you can find the KeyBot hardware IC, too.

ASUS Motherboard

On the bundled software disc you'll get these to use with your new build:

  • ROG GameFirst III
  • ROG RAMDisk
  • ROG CPU-Z
  • ROG Mem TweakIt
  • Kaspersky® Anti-Virus
  • DAEMON Tools Pro Standard
  • ASUS WebStorage
  • Home Cloud
  • ASUS Utilities

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: No issues what so ever. Has my i5 4690k running completely stable at 4.6ghz. Had it up to 4.7ghz & stable. Backed it off a tad just so I could lower the voltage a bit & get a little lower cpu temp. Memory overclocked well too. DDR1866 running stable at 1980 with stock timings. Great looking board as well. Very stable well built board.

Cons: Not a one.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Motherboard

Pros: - Really nice looking, easy to navigate BIOS
- Red lighting around the SoundFX and ROG logo areas, looks cool with a windowed case. Lighting pulsates when the machine is powered off too.
- Great layout, super easy to wire everything to
- Did I say the BIOS was simple? I hadn't built a computer in about 14 years before getting this and putting it together. With a little research into what my settings should be (non-overclocking, just wanted it to run auto at low power when it could) it was easy to set up. Fan tuning is easy too, had to go in to set my liquid cooler radiator to run at constant full speed, because the system fan header I connected it to was not powering it at full at first, which made it whine. Quick fix. Also very easy to switch to XMP profile for my 2133 ram.
- Audio seems pretty good for being built in

Cons: Really none at all.

Other Thoughts: I wanted a high end board to compliment high end components. This fits the bill, and has run completely stable since I set it up a week ago.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW

Pros: Well let me start off by saying WOW! This a beast of a motherboard, Asus has the best bios on all their boards. I paired this board with the i7 4790k stock speed of 4.0 GHZ with a turbo clock speed of 4.4 GHZ. With the features this board has in bios i was able to change the turbo clock speed up from 4.4. to 4.6 GHZ, just by using CPU level up. it was that simple!!! with board paired up with CPU it is unstoppable!! I have been throwing everything but the kitchen sick at it, and nothing can bog it down.

1 out of 5 eggsbuggy as hell

Pros: looks fancy

Cons: BIOS is buggy, constantly shuts off then powers back on, is always hit or miss with detecting my SSD, which was working fine with my MSI mobo before this, boot menu doesn't work right

Other Thoughts: i used to think that ASUS made the best mobos, but i guess that doesnt hold true anymore. id rather have an ASRock mobo than deal with this buggy hellhole of a mobo again

2 out of 5 eggsOpen-box problem

Pros: The usual ones for a board in this price range.

Cons: Missing Q-connector. This was an Open-Box newegg.com purchase. So I knew this could happen. I contacted Asus support and they refused to send me a replacement Q-connector (a sub $5 part).

Other Thoughts: I've purchased Asus parts/devices for several years (although not exclusively) and was always pleased with their service/products. The Q-connector is a great invention for people like me trying to build a new system with poor eyesight.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome MoBo

Pros: Overclocking and customization galore
ROG optimized
Excellent utilities
Looks STUNNING and glows red - nuff said!
(Warning: placing this mobo in a case without a view panel would be like hiding Mila Kunis in a closet - don't do it!)
8 SATA ports!!!
4 Ram slots
Built in sound (up to 7.1 surround) and graphics (Intel)
Includes software designed to enhance your gaming experience.

Cons: Restricted to only a dual SLI Graphics card set-up due to only 2 PCI-Express slots.

Not necessarily a con (for me a big PRO) - the board glows a sultry red at all times, so keep that in mind if you are planning on using a view panel computer case with other lighted components.

Other Thoughts: This is the fourth ASUS mobo I've used in building a gaming rig and the first from the ASUS' Maximus line of mobos. Impressive doesn't come close to describing this board and what it is capable of. For the hard-core overclockers out there, this board supports it all including CPU and GPU overclocking.

If you want to keep things simple and just get your rig up and running without fussing with overclocking, the on-board install and set-up software took me less than 5 minutes to get running. Simple, simple simple!

Bottom Line:
Although the Hero VII is the "Entry level" mobo in the ASUS Maximus line-up, there is nothing entry level about its features and abilities. This is a serious gamer's mobo that does it all and then some and looks fantastic while doing it!
