5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely wicked piece of equipment, even in 2016!

Pros: -Extraordinary build quality
-Unique and sturdy backplate
-Overclocks like a monster
-Nice aesthetics
-Has proven "Future proof" enough for my uses

Cons: -HEAVY
-pretty big heatsink (really only a con for multi-GPU setups)
-Elphida Memory (WHY!?)

Other Thoughts: Bought this in 2013 When I came to realize that my odds of getting a 290x were nill. Gotta say I'm pretty satisfied so far. Has destroyed just about everything I've thrown at it and with the oc I still just about max out everything (exceptions are godrays/some lighting effects and occasionally shadows). I game at 1080p, always shooting for 60fps, usually at 2x/4xMSAA.

Build: Gotta say as someone who normally buys the mainstream cards how impressed I am with this piece of equipment. The massive heatsink keeps this thing nice and cool (I'm talking even with my oc I've never ever broken 70c even on benchmarks) The backplate has kept this beast nice and straight throughout the years and I personally like all the lights (even if it did force me to go with a two-tone color scheme) and the Lightning logo that varys by color according to load is pretty sick too. Let's not forget the solid caps and 16 phase power design (14 for gpu and 2 for memory) I can tell that if I wanted to suit this thing up with a watercooling system that I could push it much further. That is if it wern't for Nvidia's shenanigans (see below)

Overclocking:
GPU:
Using a custom fan control scheme I have been able to push thing to 1074mhz base and 1113mhz boost with a max boost of 1202mhz (which it can easily maintain under any condition).
Here is where the trouble with that comes in. Thanks to Nvidia's "green light program" all 780 series GPUs throttle at 1.25v regardless of circumstance. This means that even though I'm sure I could push 1300mhz even on MSI's aircooler (which I still use), I can't go above where I'm at now because it throttles. I can understand setting some standards but in this case this card was DESIGNED to go much further. Ultimately all the extra hardware is wasted potential because of this; I'm looking at you Nvidia, shameful display.
Memory:
No overclockability whatsoever, no matter how much voltage I throw at it (believe me I tried). A card on this level should NOT be gimped by shotty memory. I understand there was a shortage of better memory at the time but this is still not an excuse. Ya could've waited, MSI.

SLI:
I really can't say anything as to multi GPU performance with this card, but I can say this; This is one fat card. If you plan on running multiples of this GPU make sure you do your homework and build accordingly. If you don't I can almost guarantee you won't get two of these to fit in your rig.

Overall:
I don't blame MSI for the Green Light program, this wasn't their fault and they were forced to follow these standards. The memory however is and its such a shame because the 780 lightning could've been so much more. The build is so solid I feel like I could throw this thing down a flight of stairs and it would still work. Even after almost two and a half years I'm still happy and consider it more than a good alternative to my first option. I can say this much, the next GPU I buy for myself will most definitely be from MSI, and if the Lightning is available at that time it'll be that much better. 5/5 without a doubt!

4 out of 5 eggsServed Me Well

Pros: I have 2 SLI'd together and I really enjoyed the performance. Beautifully rendered movies and games were outstanding!

Cons: Unfortunately, there is a 780ti and the new GTX 900 series by now, so unless you find someone who is selling good conditioned used ones it will be better to just by the new 900 series.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: plays anything......

Cons: I paid 550 for the card which included a game i dont like and will never play (no option to remove it either). Then a month later a much higher priced card drops in price (780TI)......with much better specs. Knew I should have waited longer.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This card is amazing, I have it paired with an i7-4770k @ 4.5ghz and with no overclock, I haven't seen this card go passed around 73 celcius. When I overclock it at about 1230 MHz boost I've only seen it get to 82 celcius max temp. With over lock on bf4 I stay steady at about 85 to 100+ fps at max settings and 1080p. Btw if anyone is wondering if it fits in a antec 900 mid tower case; it does without any modding. Just have to remove lower hard drive cage first to install it and then you can replace the hard drive cage. Hopefully that helps.

Cons: Don't really have any cons. It can be sorta loud at about 85% fan speed but it's nothing substantial

3 out of 5 eggs780 Lightning Review

Pros: Looks nice. Performace is good when it works.

Cons: Have gone through 4 of these since Janurary.
Average RMA time here in US is 3 weeks.

Other Thoughts: Just yesterday my 4th Lightning died. I run stock bios on all of them. The overall performance of these cards is awesome, but they are not reliable, cant trust them to last to long.

I own lots of other MSI products and they are great so by no means am I going to trash MSI in the following paragraphs. I actually enjoy MSI alot, allways have, allways will.

Right before my first two Lightnings died they would artifact alot and I would have to lower my clocks down to stock but then eventually they would die. My 3rd and 4th Lightnings just suddenly shut down and never woke back up. The clocks I was running was between 1280mhz and 1300mhz on all cards. All the cards would work fine for weeks and months at these clocks then suddenly out of no where they would die a quick death. Ran stock bios on all cards, gpu voltage in MSI indicates a lower voltage than what is being shown. I used a multi meter and voltage check points at the cards were never above 1.29 volts. I ran an EK water block also so temps were never an issue.

Also after the 2nd Lightning decided to go to gpu heaven I swapped out my power supply and motherboard because I thought maybe they may be the problem, but I was wrong.

My gut feeling tells me there is a design flaw with some of these cards. MSI added a bunch of fancy electrical contraptions to the card so it could clock high and compete with EVGA's Classified. When you fancy up the circuit board with extra fancy things that increases the chance of more things breaking.

These lightnings are a flop, easily the biggest gpu blunder of this 700 series of cards of all makes and brands.

Also I will add one more thing, I play BF4, thats all these cards have ever seen, I never bench them like some.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: This is a great card! using it in Nvidia 3D, multimonitor, or even light 4K there is absolutely nothing this card cant handle. If you are looking for a great Graphics card, but dont want to shell out the money for a 780Ti, or multi-GPU cards, this is more than capable of playing anything in ultra settings.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The middle fan can get loud under heavy load, but its not really a con, as the card has to get extremely hot before this is even noticeable

1 out of 5 eggsRemove dust problem

Pros: I just receive my card yesterday

Cons: Yesterday I received my graphics card MSI GTX 780 Lightning and I have instaled in my computer. I noticed that the fans have not Started in the opposite direction to remove dust. But after the instalation of drivers I restart my computer to complete the instalation and the fans have not Started in the opposite direction to remove dust. Will I have to ask for an exchange?

Thank you!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

This is not true, please observe carefully that initially the fan spins clockwise until the OS starts to load then it spins counter-clockwise.
