1 out of 5 eggsunreliable in Mac Pro 3,1 OS X 10.8.4

Pros: it works great for the brief moments before attached HD is frozen and useless

Cons: attached HD freezes mid transfer requiring forced computer restart, draws power from SATA port (in a Mac Pro you lose one HD bay in the tower)

Other Thoughts: Installed in Mac Pro 3,1 tower running OS X 10.8.4. Didn't realize it needs power from SATA when purchasing, but could live with that if it worked. Tried different slots, different USB 3.0 HD's, same result - after a while attached HD freezes and that's that. Same thing when tested in 10.10. Same thing when tried installing the provided drivers. Newegg won't let me return this junk so hopefully you can learn from my $15 lesson.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsOk Upgrade for Mac Pro Towers

Pros: Popped it in and connected the power and it just worked in my Mac Pro tower. Easy to install.

Cons: The power cable is flimsy. The soldering on the power connector is really bad too and can be damaged really easy when inserting the power cable for the first time.

After 5 months the power cable went bad. I suggest getting the 4 port version and springing for a internal power adaptor - a mini 6 pin to molex and a female to female molex power adapter if your upgrading a Mac Pro. Forget the hard drive power cable thing. Plus if you do it that way you get your fourth hard drive back.

Also Mac OS X El Capitans native drivers for 10.11 don't seem work as of yet and there are no other driver alternatives. Mac OS 10.10.x worked flawlessly and it works when dual booted into Windows for Steam gaming.

Other Thoughts: The internal power cables from the mac pros mother board are mini 6 pin to male molex. Then the card itself has a male molex power port. The should include a "female to female" molex cable for mac people.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsFailing card

Pros: After solving the driver problems the card was working fine and fast when it worked.

Cons: Card no longer sees my drives no matter which of the two ports on the back are used. Even connecting my drives via a USB 3 hub does not help. Only solution is connecting my drives to a motherboard USB 2 port(s).

Other Thoughts: Unless Orico can solve my problem with a remote fix or send a new card I would not recommend this card. Should the problem be solved I will revise this review.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Bother

Pros: Came with a SATA to Molex connector (not indicated). Also a low profile bracket.

Cons: Came with a SATA to Molex connector (I ordered one separately because it was not indicated; a waste of money).
Does not work. Worked once in a PCI-e x16 slot when it (finally) detected and installed the Root Hub, but otherwise showed "Device would not start" error when installing the latest driver. Tried installing with a USB 3.0 ext. HDD attached, and that got the Root Hub installed, but the drive was not detected. Moved back to the PCI-e x1 and got the same driver error.

Other Thoughts: Time to RMA this piece of trash and get another brand. This was all in a Dell OptiPlex 780 system, so beware.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Gary,

Thank you very much for choosing ORICO as your preferred choice.
We are terribly sorry for all the inconvenience our products caused to you.
Please kindly replug the express card to solve the problem you mentioned.
Or please kindly try the card at another computer.
If it still doesn't work, can you give us a chance to send you a replacement?
We really appreciate it if you can contact us via lor@orico.com.cn or supports@orico.com.cn
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks.

5 out of 5 eggsOrico stands behind product

Pros: Orico stands behind their product. When I had problems with the original card, they helped troubleshoot, and then finally replaced the card. The card does what it is supposed to do. The software for the driver was very simple to use.

Cons: The first card stopped working after a few weeks and I spend a fair amount of time to try to make it work again. But, the replacement card is working just fine.

Other Thoughts: When doing a backup to my USB 3.0 WD drive the time savings was approximately 25% which I thought was low, but I am not a tech guru.

3 out of 5 eggsMac Pro Issues

Pros: The card installs easily and is a perfect fix. It provides everything you need to run power from one of your HDD bays in the card. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Once installed, it ran fine and was much quicker than any USB 2 I have on the Mac Pro.

Cons: Think about what you want to run on this card before you install it. If you plan to run any external HDD or USB flash memory on your MacPro - don't buy this card. It goes to sleep when the Mac goes to sleep and does not properly eject your HDD. I lost a few files on a flash memory card when the computer went to sleep and dropped the connection with they card.
My plan was to run an external disk array and use the quicker USB 3 connection to move data quicker. Not going to work as I don't want to leave my computer running 24/7.
If you plan to leave your Mac awake all the time - or just use this and then unplug your device after each use - this card works. I just don't want my Mac on all the time and so I'm having to work on "plan B" for my external disk array.

Other Thoughts: Its not the card's fault - its my fault and Apple's fault - that the computer goes to sleep and drops the HDD. I have found programs that eject a HDD when going to sleep, but they do not remount the HDD when the system wakes up. So if this is what you want it to do, it won't do it.
It works in Windows 8 and Mac. I have boot camp and this card works fine in Win 8 and the "eject" is not an issue in Win 8 with drivers built into the OS. Maybe I need to consider switching...
I don't like giving up a HDD bay as I'm pushed for disk space already (thus adding an external array). There are cards out there that do not require an external power supply and work fine. I bought one and its working fine. It was not worth the time to return a $14 purchase so I'll just suck it up for now.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Linux drivers

Pros: Pretty color.

Cons: Linux has a kernel panic during system boot with a drive plugged in. Plugging a drive in after locks up the system tight -- no recovery possible.

Cons: None at all

4 out of 5 eggsFast and faster!

Pros: Very fast transfers-reads and writes.
Good price on sale.
Has a low profile bracket...
this is a just a basic unit---

Cons: no internal header for front panels ports
I had to use the cd for the drivers but no biggie
not really a con but you may not have a Molex connector on some of the more slimmed down newer pc's. I had to actually install one on an HP unit. The unit only had SATA power cords and one fan plug....talk about cheap!!! That's what they made soldering irons----------

Other Thoughts: I can't believe how fast this thing is. I put this in a cheap HP sff pc for a faster usb port and it really works great with USB3 flashdrives! It transfers all my video/medial files so much faster than the old USB2. I am so glad I got this......no waiting around! Now to see how long it will last......for the price just get it-------------------
