5 out of 5 eggsNICE! Very few complaints...

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: This PSU is pretty nice. Fully modular. Cables are flat and contrary to some people's complaints, very manageable in my 6 year old CM tower. Plenty of misc. cables. Very easy to install. Stable and reliable. Solid, quality feel when you first take it out of the box. Good packing and secure padding.

Cons: Virtually none. But I do want to be 100% honest so that a potential buyer gets the whole story.

Cable connection could fit a little tighter into PSU and a little looser into hardware. Neither are deal breakers by any means imo.

Other Thoughts: My setup:

AMD FX 9590 8 Core 4.7 CPU

Radeon R9 280x OC WindForce

Asus M5A97 R2.0 MoBo

Adata 265 Gb SSD (Sata 6)

WD 750 Gb 7200 HDD

Thermaltake Water 3.0 performance CPU cooler

2x DVD Writeable drives

3 120mm case fans

....

I calculated my setup at about 720ish watts requirement, so I went with this 850. It DOES get a bit .. a BIT mind you, hot under decent load. I do also slightly underclock my cpu and have gone into BIOS and adjusted some options for optimal temperature priority/solution as well.

Take it as you may, but won't list it as a con. Just stating info for comparison or whatever helpful use it may provide you with.

I write this because I feel the fan should function a little earlier on maybe?

Again, nothing listed constitutes a con by any means.

2 out of 5 eggsbroken from out of the box

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Smelt clean out of the box, like a new car ? Not sure if thats a good thing

Cons: TL:DR the fan never spun under heavy loads, random consecutive shut downs and it fried my hardware when it died.

It barely worked for 2 months. from out of the box the fan never spun when started nor under heavy load. i expected the fan to spin when starting . you know , show -some- kind of life and functionality, but as I read on forums the fan on this PSU doesnt normally spin when starting the computer . I personally think this is a pretty big con . given that anything with a fan in your computer normally spins up at the start , even if the part isn't always on like a second video card when under light load, it will still power on at the start and then shut off when not in use.

Worryingly , I tested the PSU with Planetside 2 on max. it was the heaviest game I had at the time. It lasted a good while before my computer spontaneously shutdown mid game ,the fan never spinning up once. The PSU and rig entirely barely reaching typical gaming temps with the case open.

After shutting down it quickly tries to boot it self back up on its own like a flickering light slowly dying out if I didnt force it off by switching off the volt switch in the back of the PSU

Time passed and the issue seemed to happen less and less so ignored it.
till I bought battlefield hardline ,
Battlefield put my rig under a bit more of a heavy load then planetside did
I believe this caused the issue with the PSU fan never spinning even under heavy loads to kill the PSU which caused my HDD, and my CDdrive to get fried from it

Because of this faulty PSU I needed to purchase a new PSU ,HDD , OS, and CDdrive.

I now use an EVGA 850 G2 , happily ,it runs as it should. for the few days ive been using it under heavy and light loads.
this is just my experience with corsair's PSU . and it put a very bad taste in my mouth for them.
with my experience I can not comfortably recommend buying one (if you value your other parts connected to it)
if I could get a full refund i would.

4 out of 5 eggsIn regards to Corsair Link Compatibility

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Had this power supply up and running powering my new system build for over a week. So far, so good. I bought it mainly for the reason of being quiet, as my build features a Fractal Design Define R5 case.

Cons: What is a disappointment to me is the fact that even though Corsair advertises this PSU to have Corsair Link, the Corsair Link Analog to Digital Bridge Cable that you need to use Corsair Link monitoring software, is not included. You have to pay extra for it. I would like to be able to monitor if and when the PSU's cooling fan runs. For the premium price of this PSU, I feel the Corsair Link Analog to Digital Bridge Cable should be included with the PSU. I also feel Corsair is misleading in their advertising. Had I known this, I wouldn't have bought this PSU. I have purchased Corsair products for years. So now if I want the monitoring capability, I have to spend another $10+ to get the Corsair Link Analog to Digital Bridge Cable. And I still believe I will need to purchase their Corsair Link Cooling Node to connect the aforementioned cable, as I have used the USB port motherboard connectors on my MSI motherboard,

Other Thoughts: I just hope it keeps working.

1 out of 5 eggsDead

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: It ran for about 1 day. It did have a strong smell to it when I first opened it up but that quickly went away. It ran quietly.

Cons: Well it went bad in under a week. 12V rail is dead.

1 out of 5 eggsMe No Likey

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Ran super quiet, had to see if the bloody thing was even rotating its fan.

Cons: Weirdest smell when it first arrived. Figured it was just a products "new" smell.

The cords are flat and hard to move around, felt like I was wrestling a really dry but mad octopus. The power supply wound up burning out and wouldn't turn on ever again. Too much of a hassle to return for another exact product and more tentacle wrestling. Let my teacher have it for his Engineering class to toy with.

Other Thoughts: Never again.

5 out of 5 eggsBest PSU I've had so far

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Love this power supply. Being fully modular has made a huge difference with cable management as well as appearance. Although I do route my cables through the back, you're still going to see parts of them, and having it modular really helps with that.

This 850 watt gives me plenty of power, with plenty of power to spare. I'm not sure if I'll just upgrade my current computer with more RAM and another graphics card, but if the power isn't in super high demand, I might just switch this power supply over to my new build, who knows?

Cons: None that I can think of, and I've had this for about a year.

Other Thoughts: I've been a Corsair fan for a while. My first build I bought Corsair RAM, and to this day I don't buy ram from anyone else. This was my first build with a Corsair power supply, and in my next build, you can bet it'll have a Corsair power supply in it as well.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing power, great for OC. Not so great cables.

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Amazing design. Quiet, sleek, and fully modular.

Fits like a glove and is GREAT for a stable overclock if that's what you're going for. Great price and great product. Nice looking flat cables.

Cons: The pins on the cables are pretty hard to get into the PSU at times. For flat cables they can still look pretty ugly due to excess of cable at pins.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: N/A but I have read and heard that it is a really good PSU.

Cons: Arrived DOA. The PSU had a burnt electrical smell but I disregarded and hooked it up anyway. I did not power on. No good instructions for new builders. I did not care much for the flat stiff cables provided.

Other Thoughts: I have a consair H100i cooling unit which I love but this gives me some doubt's about purchasing Consair products again. I have filed a RMA for refund from newegg and I purchased another brand. I can understand if an issue would have came later with the unit but DOA is unacceptable to me. I have installed plenty of PSU's. If I hear that I might have done something wrong with the installation then I still put the blame on no troubleshooting or installation instructions included. Very disappointing.
