External docking stations are popular because of its flexibility and compatibility. However, because it is for external use, the interface limits the transfer speed of your hard drive while only allowing one to be use at a time. In a standard computer case, there are several 5.25" bays usually reserved for your DVD ROM drive, however, will not naturally fit with your 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives without some assistance. We also want to create a much faster and smoother transition from external to internal setups. Using the MB971SP-B DuoSwap, you will save precious desktop space by integrating both 3.5" & 2.5" slots into a single 5.25" bay. This gives you the ability to expand and easily go from your external docking station to your computer in just seconds.

2 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK MB971SP-B Hot-Swap Drive Cady for 2.5" & 3.5"

Pros: - Easy Install
- Allows Fast Change-out of 2.5" and 3.5" Drives without removing covers.

Cons: - 2.5" Bay Drive Eject Button Does Not Work for SSD's.
- Flakey SATA Connections to Drive on 25% of Units.
- Drive Bay Covers do not work with Drives Installed.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased and installed 5 of these ICY DOCK drive caddy's for use in servers that I have built. I like that I can do hot swaps (kind of) on 2.5" SSD's for OS development and also quickly change out 3.5" HDD's for off-site system backups. The convenience and ability to put two drives in one bay made the relatively high cost worth it IMO.

The problems with the drive eject bar not properly catching a 2.5" SSD which is around 7mm thick is well known. I run my OS on these SSD's and I don't change them out regularly so this has not been much of a problem for me. I know that I have to pull the exposed portion of the drive at the same time I push the eject button to get the drive to come out. A minor inconvenience.

The reason I gave the poor review was that I have had significant problems with the SATA connectors on the last two drive caddy's that I purchased. The problem mainly was with the 2.5" drive bay where the connection would be flakey on the 7 pin SATA connection that would drop the drive off-line and hence the server would crash. I was blaming this on the Samsung SSD and thought it was failing. After swapping out known good SSD's a couple times and getting the same failure, I finally disconnected the 7-pin SATA connector from the drive caddy and connected it directly to the SSD. No more problems after that. It was the drive caddy.

I had some problems with the 3.5" dock on another ICY Dock drive caddy that I recently purchased that was similar to the problem experienced with the 2.5" dock. I need reliable connections and high uptime for my servers. I no longer have confidence that the ICY DOCK drive caddy's are built well enough to provide that reliability.

I can no longer recommend these ICY DOCK drive caddy's for applications that require high reliability or where you are swapping out drives on a regular basis. I recommend that you seek out other options as I will be doing to replace the failing drive caddy's that I have.

4 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK MB971SP-B DuoSwap

Pros: Great add on for a 5.25 bay. I have been using this docking caddy for over a year and works great.

Cons: The only con I have found is the smaller 7mm SSD's will not eject when you push the eject button. The older and larger 2.5 SSD's will eject. Ended up using a long nose tool to pull out the 7mm SSD. This is the reason I only gave it 4 eggs. But if you install a 7mm SSD and plan on leaving it installed then these is no problem.

Other Thoughts: I have my system set up for normal work load using one of these duo docks. The second one is used for my video editing drives. Both use a SSD and a HDD. Because of my MB's lay out both SSD's are plugged into a SATA III ports, and the HDD's are plugged into a SATA II ports. The main advantage for me is the power needed to run the drives. I can turn off what I don't need at the time. Plus I don't have to get into my case to switch the drives around.
You also have to set your MB's BIOS to have all of the ports hot swap able, a must.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple, durable, and super fast data transfers

Pros: Insert drive(s), power up and mount. Simple, easy and effective.

Cons: A suggestion to improve the design. If a drive is not present, do not allow the device(s) to be powered on.

Other Thoughts: Just what I was looking for... I was able to transfer copious amounts of data from both Linux and Windows sources quickly. What used to take me days, for example to transfer 1TB of data using a USB 2.0 device now only takes hours.

2 out of 5 eggsRating decreasing

Pros: Makes drive swaps easy

Cons: Bought 6 - 2 RMA'd for broken doors

1 SATA Power connection broke off - I purchased a replacement giving the unit the benefit of the doubt

1 2.5 on/off switch just stopped working yesterday.

2 broken doors, a broken SATA power connection, and now a on/off switch, not good in my world.

Other Thoughts: MAYBE if 1 unit was made for SSD, and 1 for regular HDs, the simpler design would allow for better quality.

I have purchased my last one of these.

Newegg, as always, gives great service when selling and handling product problems.

4 out of 5 eggsGood- but BE CAREFUL

Pros: They make changing drives a quick and easy operation

Cons: The thinner SSDs, I have 2 OCZ Vectors, don't always eject properly.
The piece where the power cable is attached has come off on 1 of the units I have, had to throw it away and order a replacement.

Other Thoughts: These are decent units but need to be engineered a little better. IMO they have to be handled with kid gloves when it come to inserting and ejecting drives, as well as attaching SATA cables.

I did buy 7, 1 as a replacement, so they are not the worst thing I ever used :-)

3 out of 5 eggsbecoming obsolite with newer (thinner) ssd drive

Pros: Solid construction, does what it says, practical for multiple OS.

Cons: The ejector arm for the 2.5 hdd / ssd drive will just pass over the new (thinner 7mm) Samsung SSD 840 series. You will not be able to eject those drive.

2 out of 5 eggsFails

Pros: Dual drive, SATA, should be ideal

Cons: Does not work with my 3.5" WD black 1TB. 2.5 slot works fine, 3.5 does not. Windows will not boot if installed and will not detect while running. Swapped all cables around, no luck. 2.5 drive attached to 3.5 connector works fine. I think this is a power issue as I put a multimeter on the SATA lines and one that is supposed to be 0V is at 2V.

Other Thoughts: I think they have split the power connector in order to power both slots and the WD drive does not appreciate that.

5 out of 5 eggsICY Dock hot swap

Pros: Easy installation, a novice could use it. Great for using those old hard drives for backup. Reasonably priced

Cons: Need to reboot to see the drive once inserted, but I guess that isn't really a bad thing.

1 out of 5 eggsCheesy junk--don't buy!

Pros: Great idea.
Like that the drive slots have individual power buttons.

Cons: Doors are flimsy / should probably be removed before they break on in use, if they don't arrive pre-broke like mine.

Eject button for 3.5 hard to use, takes *a lot* of pressure to get a drive to pop out far enough to grab.

Eject button for 2.5 is entirely worthless when I tested it, would not have been able to remove drive if I'd already mounted the bay into my computer.

Both ejection arms are flimsy and should move further.

Other Thoughts: Out of the box the 2.5" door was already detached, and the 3.5" door came loose as I moved it the first time. Ok, other reviews mention it's probably best to remove them straight away... turns out they're right.

First thing I did was slide in a HGST laptop (rotary drive). The eject button does NOTHING. There's a cut out over the circuit board right where the lever tries to hit. Probably works *a little* better with a big square SSD.

Then I slid in a full size drive, and the 3.5" eject button also has almost effect--unless you push it really hard.

The price is actually pretty high for such flimsy plastic cr@p. These key parts should be metal and possibly geared to increase force/distance.

Pity, I like other products from IcyDock.
