5 out of 5 eggsFree core.

Pros: I bought this to build a Windows server at home to practice with. It is not a production machine. I was able to unlock the 4th core and it has been stable for a few years now.

Cons: None. I got what I paid for plus some.

Other Thoughts: Running four cores 16 GB RAM and various hard drives. Rock solid for a least two years now.

5 out of 5 eggsGet It !!!!!

Pros: if your on a budget, with the urge to upgrade, try new things, then this CPU is for you, have used it for almost 2 yrs, in 2 mobos and worked perfectly, no hang ups stable, fast a great chip, I'm no high end gamer, for the just online, hdmi streaming, ripping burning guy, this is what your looking for

Cons: not a quad core

2 out of 5 eggsGave up the ghost after a year

Pros: Inexpensive, easily overclocked CPU.

Cons: After the first year, the processor began to crash whenever the core temp went over 40C. I sent it back to AMD for replacement.

This may be due in part to the cheap heat sink, fan, and thermal paste that comes with the unit. I purchased an aftermarket heat sink with fan and some arctic silver to do the job right when the replacement arrives.

Other Thoughts: I had no issues with it while it worked.

5 out of 5 eggs<3

Pros: Love, love, love this processor. You see all the mess about the unlockable core. Don't buy this if you're gambling - buy it because it's a rock solid monster.

Cons: Some of those who /do/ buy it for the purpose of unlocking a fourth core will find disappointment. Mine didn't (yes, I had the right mobo and BIOS), and I was fine with that. I get 50fps in demanding current generation games. YMMV, of course.

Other Thoughts: The price was perfect when I bought it - under a Benjamin! Now it seems scarce and that's a shame.

5 out of 5 eggsThree Headed Dragon

Pros: Fast, cheap, and stable. High performance. Easy to overclock with a slight voltage change depending on ram/ hyperthreading speed. Able to unlock core, its built on the phenom deneb core without l3 cache and a 4th core.

Cons: No l3 cache. Bottlenecks at times, mainly due to no l3 which some programs utilize like video editing etc etc. Newegg no longer stocks this so go for another rana model.

Other Thoughts: For this price and the ability to unlock a core/ cache & being easily able to overclock makes this a champ! Runs at a good temperature with the right cooling. Been running stable overclocked @ 205mhz ht for over 8 months now. AMD does it again!

5 out of 5 eggsBig Improvement.

Pros: Works great. No problems.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is a big imporvement over the 2.8gig pentium d that I was using. I use it with the ASRock K10N78M-PRO motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Buy! Unlocked 4th Core!

Pros: -High stock clock speed
-Easily overclocked
-Unlocked 4th core (Phenom II B40)
-Good performance even at stock levels

Cons: -Not for sale anymore? Find it elsewhere if you are interested because it's an awesome value

Other Thoughts: Unlocked 4th core on an MSI 880GMA-E45 MicroATX motherboard. Has worked solidly at both stock clock and @ 3.2 GHz.

Deserves 6 stars!

5 out of 5 eggsGood solid CPU

Pros: Inexpensive, stable and good performance. I was able to overclock this to the limits allowed by my memory, and achieved a speed of 3.5 GHz. The system has remained very stable under heavy computing loads at this speed.

Cons: The fourth core was unstable when unlocked, but if I was so concerned with getting a fourth core, then I should have purchased a quad core outright.

Other Thoughts: A good value for the money, although as I do simulations work I now wish I had explicitly purchased a quad core. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Cheap

Pros: very powerful cpu for the price. AMD always comes out ontop for budget builds. It Unlocked the 4th core with no stability issues on my msi 785gtm-e45 board.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I didnt bother to use the stock heatsink due to reviews and I wanted some headroom in the future for OC so i got the coolit ECO ALC water cooler. Idles at 30* with cool and quiet on and 25* with cool and quiet off. This is all with the 4th core unlocked, i installed, went to bios, unlocked and havent touched it since then. Going to OC to 3.7 on this eventually when i have nothing to do.

5 out of 5 eggsAMD CPU

Pros: It works. Runs cool. Decent price. AMD products are excellent for mainstream use.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: No OC, everything stock on my 6-month old board (N68-S BIOS v2.10.) The board likes vary the voltage between 1.445 and 1.475 (technically 1.45 is max spec.) I think it might just be the board being voltage happy since I just went into BIOS and selected "Load Setup Defaults" and "Save and Exit."

Did not have time to tweak/undervolt it. Despite the board's overvolting, temps are very nice on stock cooler with Cool n Quiet enabled. (28C idle to 38C load.)

5 out of 5 eggs1st build

Pros: great bang for your buck...this is my first build and i didnt want to spend a lot on the cpu. this thing rips through 1080p endcoding and transcoding much faster than my 1.8 ghz sempron. dont do a lot of gaming but that may be my next build (x6 maybe) but this is such a step up from what i was use to geez :) im happy
specs:
Win 7 professional
gskill 8gb ddr3
xfx HD 5670 512mb
TT lanbox lite
Corsair 650w psu
lite on BD rom
MSI dvd-rw

Cons: no L3 cache....would have bought a phenom for that.

Other Thoughts: unlocked 4th core with asus m4785 evo

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for the price

Pros: -Fast, as fast as I need for my gaming rig
-Very cheap considering its performance, I got it for like
$65 when it was on sale + bundled.
-Zero BSOD

Cons: -I don't really care for the AMD mobo selections, but that's
not a real con so I keep the stars at 5
-BUY AN AFTERMARKET COOLER, THE STOCK FAN IS SOOO
LOUD, AND THE RMA REPLACEMENT I RECIEVED WAS SLIGHTLY LOUDER! This is in caps because I can't stress it enough, my ears hurt so bad from the fan. The fan whistled, grated, and everything, please take my advice.

Other Thoughts: Havent tried overclocking. I really don't see the purpose to go any faster at the cost of any stress.

5 out of 5 eggsLightning Fast

Pros: This processor is lightning fast for the price. It's a value that is extremely hard to beat. I got this hoping I could unlock the 4th core, but I had the full understanding that I might not be able to. It's a HUGE improvement from my old 2.0 GHz Athlon X2. Doesn't matter if I use 3 cores or 4 cores, it's still fast.

Cons: Stock cooler is not very good. I upgraded on a tight budget so I'm using it, but I would definitely recommend using a different one.

Other Thoughts: Excellent value, excellent performance. 4 cores beats 2 (+ hyperthreading) any day.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price!

Pros: Everything...it's a powerful processor with great overclocking ability, got mine to 3.5Ghz effortlessly.More than enough for a mid level gaming rig.

Cons: If overclocking, get a better cooler, the stock one dosent cut it.Not enough to take an egg off, just a heads up.

Other Thoughts: Although there is a possibility to unlock the fourth core(mine didn't,could care less),don't just get this for that reason alone. It's a great cpu all on it's own,and deserves a place in any serious rig.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Chip

Pros: I'm coming from an inspiron 6000 with a single core 1.6GHz intel pentium M cpu...I was so behind.

I finally got a custom built rig (budget build), but what caught me was how powerful this cheap chip is. Don't be fooled because you see intel's chips that run $1,000 and then this under $100. It is amazingly efficent, everything that maxed out my old laptop can't even touch my new desktop (4gigs DDR3 1333MH g.skill memory/Radeon HD 5570 gfx). I can be listening to winamp, watching a HD video in youtube, and launch photoshop on a core within 4 - 5 seconds.

If all you're doing is casual gaming, HD videos, this chip will suffice. You can easily run 5 - 6 big applications on this baby and it will rock your world. For me, this has been a great buy.

Don't hesitate to buy it...it's well worth the money you'll save.

If this bad boy can't handle your apps, a Phenom II x4 3.5GHz surely will. ;)

Cons: None, it's surpassed all my expectations. It's easy to see all the expensive components and think lower end stuff is weak....but that's certainly not the case with AMD. Not with this chip and not with my 5570 graphics card that fits a budget build nicely.

Other Thoughts: AMD Athlon II x3 3.0GHz + Radeon HD 5570/5670 + 4gigs DDR3 1333MHz memory = awesome budget build.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Processor

Pros: Only $75

I was able to unlock the 4th core

Overclocks well

Blazes through XP, 7, Ubuntu, and Fedora

Compiles Code and Renders HD Video quickly

Renders 3D models quickly

Blazing fast internet with 64-bit Chrome for Linux

Great Value (58.58 CPUMark / $Price when unlocked and overclocked)

Supports DDR2

Cons: The 4th core was blocked, and had to be unlocked

Could not reach 4GHZ, so I can't brag about that

Wasn't Free

It does not install itself

It does not look after young children, do the dishes, fix my car, wash my clothes, perform surgery, etc.

Other Thoughts: This is the best proccessor I have ever bought. I paired this baby with an ASUS M4A78L-M, a 9800GT, and 4 Gigs of DDR2 5300 (Good slow RAM allows higher OC). I easily unlocked the 4th core, and then I increased the system clock to 257 MHZ, and decreased the multiplier to 14, so it runs stable at around 3.6GHZ. The Windows Experience Index is 7.4, and the PassMark score is 4329.9, higher than the i5 750, and almost as high as the Phenom II X4 700. After unlocking the 4th core the name changes to a Phenom II X4 B40. I bought the processor from a brick and mortar store in march, and it still runs beautifully with no performance loss. This was my first AMD processor, and I am only buying AMD from now on (I am willing to try out Via though).

5 out of 5 eggsAMD Athlon IIx3 440 Rana

Pros: I originally purchased this 4 months ago. Since then i have been pleasantly enthused wiith this processor. Luckily enough i got the forth core to unlock and have o.c it to 3.450ghz stable w/ prime 24 hours. not bad, but i did have to play with the voltage a bit to get it stable at that point. So being the busy body i am i thought heck what if this 4th core isnt so stable...so i dummbed it back down to 3 cores and started playing around....i got to 3.605 ghz before any stabiliy issues. Now im stuck with another decision lol 3 x 3.605 or 4x 3.450 i paired this awsome cpu with budget in mind with biostar A780L3G mb and some mushkin ram and a zalman cpu cooler...not bad when both my o.c 3 or 4 core never broke 42 degrees :P

Cons: cons....well ..um...none ...u cant beat this cpu for the price i mean common....its not actually rocket science

Other Thoughts: when paired with a decent mb, decent ram and decent cooling this thing really performs, my brother was hard pressed last weekend when he found a bent pin on his 955 black so we just through his 5750 into this beast and pounded away at the games... he was impresses as was i at the performance comparison from sub 100$ to 150$ processor, with intel....not gonna happen at these prices. I mean really does your cpu have to cost as much as your porche to have fun,...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your buck

Pros: Great multi tasker, low price.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This machine outpaces the core 2 duo E8500 it replaces (which cost more than 3x as much less than 2 yrs ago).

At only $20 more, it is probably a much better bargain than the Intel E3300 I used in a budget build a couple of months back.

Pros: 3 cores is perfect for me

runs cool

5 out of 5 eggsFast and stable

Pros: Fast. Stable.Cheap. Running at 3.74 Gig.

Cons: Not a true con but I was able to unlock the fourth core and it did work but no one tells you that for the most part that new core cannot be reliably overclocked. I use an MSI MB that allows each core to be individually overclocked but that didn't help. No egg taken off for that.
Took lots of tries to get overclocking working because the MB BIOS had so many options but I've been a computerist for 30 years and I like playing with settings. I also had the memory to adjust which the MB also had numerous settings.

Other Thoughts: Never used the included cooling fan. Using a Gelid Tranquillo for maximum cooling. Never breaks 40 degrees C even when gaming on hot days.
The cpu went down in price a month after buying. Also the Rana 445 3.1 Gig cpu was added after I bought this one. Would have bought that one if available.

5 out of 5 eggs2 out of three ain't bad

Pros: I have Asus motherboards that automatically unlock the full performance of these processors. I purchased three Athon II X3 cores, and two of the three unlocked to X4 Penoms.

One stayed what it was. So I am very happy with my purchase.

Cons: None, unless you call one of three not unlocking to something better a con. I ended up with $375 worth of awesome AMD processors for a mere $225.

5 out of 5 eggsShe's a screamer!

Pros: Unlocked 4th core! and running at about 3400mhz. Processor is screaming fast, but having some issue with stability. Could be driver related, haven't determined the cause just yet. I suspect the 4th core isn't going to be able to overclocked. but there is a reason these are sold as 3 core processors, cause the 4th core may not be stable. Using the stock cooler, but it isn't getting hot around 30c.

Cons: None, Awesome processor with or without the 4th core.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my son, I want one now, but can justify, when my Athlon Regor, 2.8gig is overclocking at 3.6gig and stable.

5 out of 5 eggsBest CPU deal in town, period.

Pros: This CPU was a sublime performer with 3x3.0ghz cores paired with 4gb DDR3 1333, unlocked the 4th core and it is everything anyone could ask for in a desktop CPU (well maybe a lil more L3 cache, but for the price who cares). Stays under 55degC w/stock heatsink and fan even with 4 cores unlocked. Stable for memtest86+, prime95 for 24hrs, and linpack (CPU Burn Test).

Cons: None yet., single best CPU purchase I've ever made.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money on Intel, sure hyperthreading is nifty, but it's not worth the premium you pay for fake cores. If for some reason I needed to spend a grand on a processor I would get an Intel, but I can't imagine any average or even "power" user really being able to justify the expense.

Oh, and I dont' know if ALL of these processors will be stable with 4th core unlocked, but I don't think I've read of a single case where the 4th core wasn't unlockable, really just marketing by AMD... Hey nobody's perfect ;)

5 out of 5 eggsFall 2010 top choice

Pros: Amazing performance at this price point! Don't take my word for it. Read the professional reviews and benchmarks on the Hardware sites. This line of processors is the mean little brother to the AMD Phenom line, nearly the same processor minus some level 3 cache that has minimal impact for most users (unless you are doing CAD or real-time graphics editing).

Cons: Ummmm... it isn't free. Yeah, and it doesn't hop out of the box and install itself. Yup. And it won't automatically upgrade itself, so I will have to replace it eventually. Shucks.

Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd Athlon II X3 that I have purchased this year. I built myself a new gaming rig in the spring and my friends have been so impressed with my "budget" system's performance that I am likely to be building a 4th one in the next few weeks.

4 out of 5 eggsexcellent processor- great deal

Pros: gets what needs to get done and then some. i rarely go over 50% cpu usage at all
great for gaming, multitasking, media editing, recording. i havent come across anything that this processor cant handle.
runs cool with stock heatsink and fan. but recommend an aftermarket one if your going to be doing anything that demands alot. warms up pretty fast

Cons: none at all so far

Other Thoughts: big difference from a p4 ht oc'd to 2.9 haha

Pros: Awesome value for the price, especially if the fourth core unlocks! Mine unlocked using an ASRock 870 board, now shows up as a Phenom II X4! Rosk solid steady!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Not using the stock cooler. Will try some overclocking one of these days.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Processor for the $$$

Pros: Here is the thing. This CPU ROCKS!! Not only is it really affordable but even without unlocking the 4th core this thing is fast. There really is no reason not to by this thing. If you are like me you are contemplating if you should just spend the extra money and get a quad but im telling you you will be happy that you got this.
Also if you are worried that you can't unlock the 4th core here is my 2 cents on that. Originally AMD locked the 4th core because they had problems with them. After demand got so high for these they started pulling chips that didn't have an unstable core and started locking them so that they could meet the demand. I'm not saying that you will unlock the 4th core for sure but I am saying that if you have a motherboard that is capable of doing so and you read all the reviews around here you will notice more often then not people have been able to unlock the 4th core. Don't buy expecting a quad. Its only a bonus to a great CPU.

Cons: Absolutely non

Other Thoughts: I unlocked the 4th core and it was stable without adjusting the voltage.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Unlocked 4th core using with ASRock motherboard and running stable at 3.0 GHz. I haven't tried to overclock the CPU and probably won't. I use this primary for home theater playback and re-encoding blurays. Fourth core makes a big difference in re-encoding speeds.

Cons: None at all for the price. Suits my HT needs perfectly. I wouldn't go for any more or any less.

5 out of 5 eggsBest processor for the money

Pros: Quad core once you unlock it! go ahead, try and find a faster processor for that price.

Cons: not much overclocking ability while remaining stable, but for that price you're doing well anyway

Other Thoughts: I'm not into PC gaming, but I do a bit of rendering and this handles that better than any other processor I've tried at this price range. Especially once I unlocked the fourth core.

Pros: No problems at all with install on ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3.

5 out of 5 eggsBang for Buck superlative

Pros: This processor, coupled with a suitable motherboard provides the end user with unsurpassed performance for the dollar!

Cons: The only con, if it can be considered such, is that the cooling solution provided seems less robust than previous CPU's from AMD. The heat pipe solutions were the best.

Other Thoughts: Several systems recently constructed all provided all four cores as operational as well as very stable 3.7 Ghz speeds. We could have taken it incrementally higher, however the additional tweaking seemed without merit.

5 out of 5 eggsMine unlocked!!

Pros: - amazing price for a competent gaming cpu
- Tomshardware rated the x3 line as more than enough for gaming cpus and this is the next to top of the line x3
- *Chance* for a free fourth core

Cons: - doesn't come with arctic silver thermal past???

Other Thoughts: I purchased this CPU as the cheapest gaming CPU that I could get planning that in a few years I could get the X6 for really cheap to switch it out with. I was very happy when it unlocked to a phenom X4. This with 4gb of 1600 mem and my Radeon 5770 runs everything I can throw at it on high settings at 1920x1200.

5 out of 5 eggsUnlocked and Ready to Go!

Pros: -Nice Clock Speed
-Cheap!
-Unlocked 4th core (to Phenom II x4 B40)
-Note that this is NOT guaranteed - buy it expecting a 3 core CPU and be happy if it unlocks

Cons: The stock heatsink is really terrible. I'm using it for now until I can save up some cash for a tower-style HSF. It's all aluminum and the fan blows down towards the MB which seems backwards to me and keeps temps higher.

Other Thoughts: My Rig (so far)

Pros: Its got three cores and was only 75$!!!!!!!!!

Cons: Didnt see too much improvement over my old AMDx2 4800. But i needed a new processor for my new mobo so this was perfect

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Economical

Pros: This chip is super fast. When paired with 2 gigs of ram and windows XP pro it screams. My previous machine, which was a dual core 2.9, took between 2 and 3 hours to convert normal size vob files to avi. With this new chip it takes about an hour.

Cons: None at this time.

Other Thoughts: If you are contemplating this chip remember that it is only $74 and you can get a lot less for a lot more.

5 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied

Pros: Great price/performance, runs cool. I bought this chip planning on overclocking, regardless of whether or not I was able to unlock the 4th core. I'm currently stable w/ the 4th core unlocked at 3.45ghz.

Cons: nothing so far

Other Thoughts: Very happy with this chip so far, and how much faster it is than my old core 2 duo e6400.
Current setup:
Athlon II x3 440 @ 3.45ghz 4th core unlocked (7.4 WEI)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64
4x1gb OCZ ddr2-800 (7.4 WEI) <- was surprised by this

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Performance for the Price

Pros: Great game performer. Played SCII on high settings for an hour and the temp didn't go above 40 (°C) with the stock cooler so I'm thinking about OCing it later. I was hoping to unlock the 4th core but did not work but I still gave it 5 eggs.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Waiting on a Asus 4870 1GB DDR5 graphics card so I can test it on ultra.

5 out of 5 eggsAMDazing

Pros: This CPU has shown real peformence while im setting up my new gaming rig. Just the demand and use alone while installing loads of stuff, it handles it all very well. Im sure the 4Gb of DDR3 helps. Gaming and digital audio recording is my main focus so im sure it will do fine for a Budget CPU. Dont really care to unlock the 4th core, whats the point? Dont buy this if thats your goal, just actually buy a Quad core. Goes great with the 790x-g45 and the Ripsaw gaming Ram, Nvidia GeForce 9800 runs smooth, could of went ATI crossfire, but im not into being that technical with this rig, which is my first build.

Cons: For the people who have the inclenation to purchae the Multi and unlock the 4th core, and then <<<<FAIL>>>> cause your MB isnt what you think it is, n your a cheap PC newb, I pitty you, I doubt you will get it RMA'd if you do scew it up. So don try. No True Cons, just incompetent persons.

Other Thoughts: Amazing for my first gaming PC.

Pros: Cost to performance AMD can't be beat, just set your budget and see what AMD CPU fits there

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Was able to unlock the 4th core, and overclocked to 3.23GHz. May up the speed more if/when I get a CPU cooler, but 4 cores running @3.23 on stock fan and no issues may push back the need for that.

5 out of 5 eggsgood little processor

Pros: Low power consumption. Fast. I pulled it out of a rig I built that just basically sat there and put it in my mother's machine. It has proven to be a lean little work horse. I recommend it.

Cons: I cannot really gripe about this processor. It is three cores at 3.0Ghz and priced just above the 2 core Regor at the same speed. Seems an obvious choice. Of course if you want L3 cache you get a phenom or go with one of the nice Intels.

Other Thoughts: I like this processor and hate that I'm becomming one of those mindless "fanboys" for AMD! That's alright - Intel makes a killer product, too.

5 out of 5 eggsCan't go wrong with this CPU

Pros: This isn't just a great budget processor, its a great processor PERIOD. I can't get over how much faster this is than my previous processor, an overpriced intel C2Q Q6600. I get more frames in my games, and I wait less for programs to open. Can't ask for more.

The included heatsink and fan looks like something from the 90's. Very small, cheap looking HSF. I was sceptical, but it does the job keeping this CPU cool. I was idling at 25c and loads didnt top 43c after 8 hours of prime.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: The 4th core on mine did unlock, and was stable. That is just icing on the cake. Even before I unlocked the 4th core and ran some stability tests this thing at stock blew my old Q6600 out of the water. A+++++ For AMD, I'll never go back to overpriced Intel.

I was able to overclock to 3.4ghz, but stopped there due to still using the stock cooler. Temps were 30c idle and 49c load, could have pushed farther but chose not to. It's nice and stable where it is, won't be pushing any further.

5 out of 5 eggsGet one.

Pros: I went from a 2.6 Ghz Pentium D to the X3 440. The X3 has the same heat shredder design from the original Athlon 64 days.

Runs smoothly in Windows 7 64-bit. I built this current machine as a general purpose home computer, e.g., surfing, blogging, video, games and etc.

The X-plane flight simulator runs exceptionally well. Unlike many games flight simulators are heavily threaded, thus the more processor cores the better.

Compared to the Pentium D, the X3 this runs much more smoothly. It takes no time at all to load scenery and flight data. In fact I'm not even aware that it is loading new information. I suppose that is what the third core is doing.

Cons: I would prefer that the processor be packaged differently. It's a little scary seeing processor exposed on the side of the box. There were no problems, however.

I would prefer a more robust cooler. However, the cooler junctions well, no overheating problems.

Other Thoughts: System Specs:

AMD Athlon X3 440 processor
ASrock 770 Extreme3 motherboard
Gigabyte GT 240 1 GB DDR3
GSkill 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM (2 x 2GB)
OCZ 600W PSU*
Two 250 GB hard drives SATA*
One 80 GB hard drive PATA*
One DVD ROM drive PATA*

*Most of these components came from my Pentium D machine. I only needed to buy the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and video card.

No overclocking. No unlocking.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little CPU!

Pros: So this is sold as a cheaper Athlon X2 tripple core processor. Coupled with a ASUS mobo I now have it unlocked to a quadcore running @ 3.01 Ghz! Can't really beat that for the price.

Cons: No L3 Cache but I am not playing COD4 or doing any video editing here at work so it will do just fine!

Other Thoughts: Intel's are nice but if you are looking at bang for your buck as Non-Profit organizations do...go with AMD. You will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 eggsBest value for productivity/gaming!

Pros: Extremely affordable!!! I was actually considering the Athlon II X2 line but I wanted to make use of my ACC feature on my Biostar A785G3 motherboard. Installation was a snap just like when I installed my Sempron 140 (unlocked to Athlon II X2 4400e). You pop the CPU in and push the lever down until it snaps into place. Back to performance, I unlocked this to its 4th core now reading in Windows 7 x64 as a Phenom II X4 B40 quad core in CPU-Z. I have no idea how well it works at stock but I stability tested this CPU for 6 hrs. 45 min with Prime95 as a quad. Success! No errors! I noticed a drastic improvement in Starcraft 2's performance (framerate was still the same but that's due to my outdated 9500GT on ultrea settings). I have yet to multitask to my fullest extent but right now it seems to be slowly settling in well. My boot times aren't any better but no worse so no complaints there. I bet you will see a drastic improvement in resource intensive applications that use a LOT of CPU power

Cons: The stock heatsink/fan combo is the exact same that came with my Sempron 140. Very disappointed in that. Do yourself a favor and buy an aftermarket Corsair H50 watercooled system which is on my list of stuff that I plan to buy for upgrades. If you are like me and are stuck with the stock cooler setup for now, just slap some arctic silver on the CPU for the time being and you won't have any overheating to worry about.

I am also baffled as to why my windows experience index score has not increased after going from a Sempron 140 single core to a Athlon II X2 triple. Still at 4.7?

I haven't determined how to overclock yet but that may be a shortcoming of my board or just plain n00biness of the lack of understanding of the % values under the core unlock feature.

My last complaint is no L3 cache, which is to be expected as this is a tri-core even though it is unlockable to a quad so definitely nothing to gripe over.

Other Thoughts: Don't go for dual Athlons as they are current tech and only $10-$15 cheaper. You myaswell go for the tri core that is unlockable to a quad and will be future proof for the majority of games and applications for quite some time.

And to all of those who are complaining about not unlocking the 4th core. QUIT COMPLAINING! It is advertised as a triple and you won't get a deal this great from Intel. $75 is an excellent price for what it does and a steal if you can unlock it!

This is my first CPU to be used for PC gaming inside of my first custom built rig. With this CPU, I expect to have many enjoyable years of PC gaming ahead of me.

Lastly, I'd like to thank Newegg for the awesome FREE 3-day shipping via UPS. Got here right on time, package a little banged up but the goods were just fine. And AMD for making a great line of CPUs for productivity/business and the budget gamer in mind.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: This is a wonderful processor for the money. As other reviews have stated, it can handle most anything an average user would throw at it. My usage is mostly HTPC, and some video rendering.

Cons: None. It does everything as advertised. If you are able to unlock the fourth core, that's bonus material. If you need more cores and more speed, spend more money. Easy.

5 out of 5 eggsA great CPU for the money...

Pros: Fast, cool, and stable. I'm running this on a gaming rig and couldn't be happier with it. I was able to unlock the 4th core with my MSI 870A-G54 mobo but it won't run stable - Oh well, for my needs, a triple core is more than enough processing power. I felt no need to overclock this beast as it's plenty fast enough and it works well with the 2Gb's of A-Data DDR3 1600 RAM I threw in. This chip replaced an old dual-core Opteron 165 after the mobo the Opty was in popped a few capacitors...

Cons: I wasn't impressed by the heat sink. It's aluminum and flimsy - I can't see how that thing can keep the CPU sufficiently cool. I swapped it out with the one I had on my Opty which is a heavier AMD heat sink with aluminum fins, a copper base, and heat tubes running through the fins. The temps seem to be happy with this combination.

Other Thoughts: Alas, I was forced to retire my old, trusty Opteron - It outlasted 2 motherboards and several other components. I hope this tri-core will give me as good of service as the Opty did. I think I will mount the Opty on a plaque and hang it on the wall as a testament to AMD's CPU quality...

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Comes with thermal compound already pre-applied.
Triple core processor for the price? Great value.

Triple core is more than enough to run the things you want. I am currently using it to power a gaming rig, and it works great. 2 cores for gaming, 1 core for background applications.

Arrives in a well-protected box with all the instruction manuals required.

Cons: No cons.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes What's needed, and does it well.

Pros: Well right now it's running 3.4 GHz at 29 degrees celcius on the stock cooler.

Cons: I didn't get a mobo that could unlock the 3rd core that I know of.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it's supposed to and 25% more.

Pros: Unlocked to Phenom II X4. Woot!

Cheaper than Intel.

NewEgg got it to me in less than 48 hours!

Cons: Getting an unlock-able unit is purely 'luck-of-the-draw'.... no guarantee.

Other Thoughts: After monitoring Task Manager/Performance for a while, I realized I don't currently run anything that requires all 4 cores. So, I set it back to 3@stock speed until need arises in the future.
Probably by the time I actually need 4 cores, 6 cores will be within my budget.
Win/win.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This peppy tri-core is super-quiet, runs cool, and is powerful enough to prevent any bottlenecks when bundled with a higher-end graphics card. Of course, if you're not using this CPU for gaming or special applications, it's more than powerful enough for anything you throw at it. Low power consumption and the potential to unlock to a full-fledged Phenom II X4 top off the fantastic package.

Cons: SERIOUSLY NITPICKING:

The AMD Athlon II sticker bundled in the retail edition doesn't have the chip's "X3" designation.

Other Thoughts: If you are spending less than one hundred dollars on your CPU, don't even consider Intel. Even at higher price points, you can get a six-core processor for what you'll pay for some of Intel's lower-end parts.

5 out of 5 eggsGood buy

Pros: Going from a E3300 to this gave me about a 30% improvement in most games, and from an unplayable 10-20 fps in GTA4 to a enjoyable 25-55. (with 4 gigs of ram and 5770 on both chips) The fan is very quiet, much quieter then any stock amd cooler I've used in the past 6 years

Cons: However the cooler is very small and doesn't look like it would take any sort of over clocking.

Other Thoughts: Was able to unlock the 4th core, but windows refused to boot, as others have said if you need 4 cores, your better off getting a 4 core and not gamble. I was going to OC the chip a little but the really small stock cooler makes me not want to risk it

4 out of 5 eggsjust ok

Pros: some what cheap runs at 3ghz does games ok

Cons: runs kinda hot 140 under prime 95 load and 90 at idle(f)
cant unlock 4 core if it has one not sure; cant over clock it a bit. wont budge over stock settings dont think its my board but fsb is so heavily taxed with 4000 ht and ddr3 ram in all.

Other Thoughts: works well for 70 bucks deffinitly dosent oc like a core 2 duo or old 939 sockets but oh well.

5 out of 5 eggsBeauty

Pros: Love it. It's currently at stock speeds and I have not tried unlocking or overclocking. I'm not that sort of person - I typically leave things at stock speed. Although I've read that it's fairly easy to get the fourth core unlocked and recognised as a Phenom II Deneb....

Price for value - solid.

Cons: Nil.

Other Thoughts: Second rig ever built and I love this CPU. Coming back to PC from a Macbook (which I used for school).

Using this in my new rig for moderate gaming (Starcraft 2, Just Cause 2, Crysis, etc.), HTPC, photo editing and work with Illustrator/Photoshop.

Pros: fast processor, cheap. Installed easily and was immediately recognized and running.

Cons: none really. I probably wouldn't buy it for hardcore gaming.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy the chip for gaming or for any overclocking or anything. Runs fast in my HTPC and has no problem running blu-ray rips.

5 out of 5 eggsAthlon II x3 440

Pros: This chip is a beast. I upgraded from a E6400 core 2 duo and the difference is night and day. This cpu is clocked at 3.0GHz, Runs cool and it's overclockable. I got it running at 3.45 GHz stable and that's using the stock fan. Windows 7 gave this chip a 6.8/7.9 rating...if that really means anything.

Cons: I couldn't unlock a 4th core with this chip BUT I was not expecting to just thought I might try and see if the feature on my motherboard would work. This is not really a con just stating that you shouldn't buy this chip expecting to unlock it.

Other Thoughts: My Build:
NZXT M59 Case
ASRock 870 Extreme3 Mobo
AMD Athlon II x3 440 AM3 CPU
G.skill 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333 Memory
HIS HD5770 1GB GDDR5 Video Card

5 out of 5 eggsbest CPU for the money

Pros: low-cost, great performance, chance to unlock a core

This was a big upgrade from my 2.6GHz Athlon 64. I paired it with an ASUS M4A785-M as part of a combo deal. I was able to unlock a core using ASUS Core Unlocker, giving me a quad core that shows up in CPU-Z as a Phenom II X4 B40. The L3 cache was not unlocked, but I'm not even sure if it is possible to unlock it, as it seems that only the very first Athlon IIs manufactured had (locked) L3 cache.

Cons: No L3 cache, which is what separates Athlon II's from Phenom II's. But this is what makes Athlon II's cheaper, so it's not really a con.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking to build a budget gaming machine, this is the ideal CPU.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bang for the buck

Pros: fast, and very quiet CPU. Should be able to run all the current games out there.

Cons: Wish it was 4 cores instead of 3.

Other Thoughts: Not the fastest CPU out there, but the biggest bang for the buck you can get. I'm satisfied with it.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great price point, fast clock speed for games that don't do multicore well, 3 cores for multitasking.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: CPU-Z shows two cores in Windows. AMD Overdrive shows 2 cores until I unlock the 4th from the mobo, then Overdrive shows 4. Linux reports 3 and 4 respectively including usage.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect CPU

Pros: *Comes with fan and heat sink
*Runs very stable and quickly
*Great price for what you get (got in combo)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I used the Easy OC switch (at +15%) on my MSI mobo and have this running at 3.45ghz and its no warmer than when running at stock. Has tackled everything I've thrown at it so far with no hiccups. Go AMD!

Oh ya, also, I haven't tried to unlock my 4th core because I'm happy with the performance of the 3.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent performance per price

Pros: Easily overclocked it to 3.64Ghz running stable in win7
Windows experience index (wei) of 6.9 stock clock, 7.0 OCd

RUNS VERY COOL DO TO THE FACT THAT A CORE HAS BEEN DISABLED - the best part of this CPU is that it was designed to be a quadcore (and handle the heat of one)

Excellent speed, good cache size

Cons: The CPU return policy mandates that they pretty much cant be returned - only exchanged. So once you press 'buy' you are stuck with this thing... Thats great until you find that your new computer build is limited by your CPU :..(

If you are going for gaming, for performance, for speed, or just benchmark sport cuz your loaded.... dude, get the best CPU you can afford. After all, its the CPU.

Other Thoughts: I wish now that I had gone and gotten a 3.2GHz six-core 125W, as in this new build of mine the CPU is the bottleneck :-(

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Quiet

Pros: Absolute no problem installing in Asus micorATX mobo. Very fast. Runs very cool. I never used a triple-core cpu before, but this surprised me at how nice it operates. This computer is for a friend who has no gaming desires, mostly internet, pictures and music. It will more than satisfy their needs.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: While testing the unit, I had no problems hooking it up to a 46 inch lcd tv, played movies flawlessly, even downloaded videos played back smoothly. For the price you cannot lose. This is a winner of a CPU

5 out of 5 eggsx2+ upgrade over 5400+!

Pros: * 3 cores
* Cheap
* 15 minute installation
* Got 125-150% Performance Improvement over my AMD 64x2 5400+ BE that it replaced!
* CS:S has no lag at 1680x1050, x4 AA with nVidia 8600 GTS 256MB
* Left4Dead 2 looks good at 1680x1050, lower settings.

Cons: * I put the case sticker on wrong, and when I tried to adjust it, it left a residue on my case that WILL NOT come off! I shouldn't have bothered.
* Temperature higher (45C) than 5400+ (37C). Either the Arctic Silver needs time to kick in, or I need to boost the fan higher.

Other Thoughts: I paid the same price, $75, for the 5400+ in Oct 2008. I hope to get a few bucks off of Craigslist to make the deal even sweeter!

* AMD Athlon II x3 440
* 4 GB Gskill (1GBx4) 800 MHz
* 250 GB WD HD
* nVidia 8600 GTS 256 MB
* Antec Sonata III case with 500w Power
* Zalman 9500C

Pros: Unlocked 4th core w/o L3 cache, runs just like AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus. Mine can OC up to 3.35Ghz after unlock. Feels like just saved $45. Great CPU.
Review helps a lots of buyer included me!!
Buy this and go for quad core.

Cons: Not at all.

Other Thoughts: You will get what you pay for? O~oh! Not this time~

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: Great price/performance on this for a non-gaming computer built for a family member. Unlocked 4th core, but it seemed to make windows sluggish and unstable, so just going to stick with the basic 3 cores.

Cons: Not really a con, but too bad that 4th core wasn't stable ;)

Other Thoughts: Would work just fine for gaming as far as i can tell if paired up with a nice video card.

5 out of 5 eggsAthlon II X2 440

Pros: Undervolted to 1.248 while overclocked at 3.3ghz. At these setting it still runs cooler than stock voltages.
Idle - 30c
Load - 47c (under prime95)
core temps are around 3-5 degrees cooler.

Undervolted to around 1.18 and load temps were 42!

All under stock HSF

Cons: Stock HSF not great. It's fine for mild overclocking, but I didn't expect it to be great.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice

Pros: One of the best AMD cpu I have ever had so far. Cost-effective. Easily unlocked to Phenom X4 B40 but mine did not post when booting up 64-bit ubuntu 10.04. (But 32-bit ubuntu runs very fine with unlocked quad core.) Since I have to use 64-bit Linux, I had to switch back to three cores.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This cpu is definitely better than dual-core ones. Pay a few more extra bucks and get this one.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Three cores provides extra head-room when compared to dual core.
Very affordable.
Low heat and energy use for performance.
And, of course, can handle some rather demanding tasks.

Cons: No L3 cache means you lose some performance for any kind of heavy streaming activity ( such as games or video editing ).

Other Thoughts: A great CPU overall, granted the Phenom II is better, and the i7 a bit better still....
