4 out of 5 eggsCarries 100 ms Latency, but otherwise works well

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: - Easy configuration
- Reasonably strong encryption that's easy to set up
- Plug and Play for almost anyone
- Far more reliable than WiFi in many circumstances

Cons: - Averaging 100+ ms Latency from Netgear connection to connection measured by routers on both sides
- Throughput speed nowhere remotely close to Netgear claims
- Real World performance of ~90 MB/s downstream and ~18 to ~22 MB/s upsteam
- "Energy Savings" feature both worthless and interferes with packets (particularly with waking up an Xbox One with Instant On) and any other packet-switched network device

Other Thoughts: This is at least the 5th home powerline networking kit I have used, as well as setting up many dozens over the years for client's and friend's. In general, the signal is far more dependable than WiFi over larger homes or areas of interference / lots of AP's, plus you can extend a WiFi network easily. However, Netgear is smoking something strong claiming 500 MB/s. Our home is all new construction and has no interference over power lines. I have never seen less than 100 ms Latency over a rather short distance. This is not terrible, but no prize-winner either. The latency is enough of an issue that I often have to change streaming from my Xbox One from "Very High" to "High." I find this annoying, but the reality is none of the powerline solutions are truly low latency and have their pros and cons.

4 out of 5 eggsMisleading but work

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: They work well, pretty painless to set up.

Cons: Advertised speed is impossible due to Ethernet Port.

Other Thoughts: These are marketed as 500mbps adapters, while the adapters themselves (chipset) is capable of this, the dead ringer is they only have 100mbps Ethernet ports. It's physically impossible for them to do 500mbps because of this, you are limited to the 100mbit Ethernet (they do come quite close to this 100mbps however, when tested on good lines I get 80-95mbps). If you need a pair of these that work, yes these work ive had zero issues but do not expect advertised speeds.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap but terrible powerline

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: easy setup
cheap on a sale for $20
works the way it's supposed to

Cons: The major con that determined why I had taken 3 eggs away is for the false advertised 500mbps it states in which this product can only support 10 up 100 down....

knowing that before hand I would have not purchased this item and do not recommend this to anyone with over 50megs of Internet as you wouldn't even come close

I have 150 megs from Comcast direct line I receive 160+ with my own router and modem but this downs my connection so much to only a 52mbps high and 40 low.

I just purchased an adapter in hopes I'll get better than a 50 download which I'm sure will happen.

*nothing more than 100mbps
*NO iPV6 support only iPV4
*Unreliable speeds
*you get what you pay for

**highly suggest getting an adapter for wifi connection instead of powerlines cheaper and better speeds**

Other Thoughts: buy it for normal everyday Internet use otherwise not for gamers or streamers.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat stable connection for gaming

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Fast, stable

Cons: Not direct fiber optic cable (lol)

Other Thoughts: I was using wifi before to game and multi-player games were a pain. Lots of random lag. Wifi is inconsistent. Other people in the house using wifi affects stability. Once I switched to EoP it increased my overall download /upload speeds. Plus no random lag. Much more stable connection. Tested it with speedtest.net I got one stable line compared to wifi where it zig zagged. Setup was easy too.

1 out of 5 eggsSolid speed increase at the cost of malfuntions elsewhere

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Fairly cheap, and very easy to set up. Plug and play, no adjustments made.

Cons: Directly after installing this units at my router and computer a touch lamp in the bedroom began randomly going on and off, or changing brightness. I chalked it up to lamp failure but after unplugging the powerline networking units it returned to normal.
The computer began to take 3-4 minutes to return from sleep mode, never had done that before. I took out the old wireless card which made no difference. Unplugged the Cat 5 cable from the Netgear unit and the computer returned to normal function.
Upon re-installation of the wireless NIC I now have network again, the computer doesn't take 3-4 minutes to return from sleep mode, but I have this Netgear Powerline 500 kit to return. MEH.

Other Thoughts: I would love to hear from others about similar issues, or once again I have a very unique situation on my hands with strange goings on after purchasing a new tech item.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad, but not great.

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Quick and easy install. Worked right away with no hassle. Small size allowed me to keep my upper outlet free. Netgear offers their powerline utility app which will tell you speed in just a click. I wish other brands offered this type of software.

Cons: Not impressed with speed. Barely faster than the previous Netgear 200 Mbps model it replaced.

Other Thoughts: Ended up returning them, and buying Zyxel PLA5456 AV2000 powerline kit from Newegg. Zyxel kit 2-3 times faster.

3 out of 5 eggsGood unit for the price

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: - Very easy to setup! Truly plug 'n play
- Slim design is nice if you're needing to plug it in behind a desk/furniture allowing it to sit more flush to the wall vs other brands
- Extremely reliable/stable connection and sustained speeds
- Comes with everything you need
- Secure connection

Cons: - If you need access to both plugs, you have to plug this in upside down and run your ethernet cord straight up (looks tacky if the plug is visible)
- Unit can get hot; no venting built into the case
- Not the fastest in this class/price point
- No passthrough

Other Thoughts: I benchmarked this setup against several other brands with same/similar specs (TP-Link, Trendnet and 2 other Netgear adapters) to see how they stacked up and this unit was middle of the pack in nearly all tests. Not the best but not the worst. If you are looking for a reliable connection that's very easy to setup, this is a great setup and will do everything you'd want/need. If you're looking for the fastest option out there, it's not going to happen at the price point. In the end I would recommend this to family and friends.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Easy To Install

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Just plug both of them in and they work.

Follow the instructions as written on the installation card to setup "security" and you are done.

Status LEDs are easy to see in a dark room, but not so bright to distract you in the darkness.

Very small device. It does not have "polarized" AC contacts, and that is a "plus" since the device can be plugged in either way and still work which means it doesn't block an outlet.

Cons: No issues so far.

If you don't read the installation guide carefully, you will overlook what the various status LEDs mean. When the device is in "powersave" mode, such a the attached Ethernet device is unplugged or powered off, the Netgear device only turns on an "amber" LED that flashes intermittently. That "amber" LED might mislead you to think there is a problem with the devices.

No pass-through AC outlet.

Other Thoughts: I would consider buying these again if needed.

I could not find any software to monitor the status or Powerline speed of these devices unlike an older model of Netgear Powerline adapters. When the product description says "Essentials", they are being totally serious.

Since this is a "Powerline Ethernet" product, your network speeds can be unpredictable for any number of reasons: quality/condition of installed house wiring; distance between Powerline devices through the house wiring; corrosion on any contacts in the circuit breaker panel and AC outlets.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent Powerline Units

This review is from: Netgear XAVB5221-100PAS AV500 1-Port Essentials Edition Powerline Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: These units are built well, internally and externally. The unit, like some other units I have seen uses an Atheros chipset, and because of that it will play well with some other units and brands (but not all of them), and it did play well with some previous units I tested. In my initial test environment, which was 2 outlets in the same room, I was seeing speeds between 70 ~ 85 mbps. In a normal scenario, I had one in my basement where my internet connect is, and one in the 2nd floor of my apartment, I was getting speeds between 15 ~ 40 mbps depending on where I had the units plugged in on the second floor (see other thoughts for explanation). These units start up very fast, and given I have worked with other types of these units before they were a breeze to setup, and I think the average computer user could probably skim the manual and set them up in minutes. The other thing I like about these units, is that the status lights tell you more things than other units do, specifically the "Pick a Plug" light that indicates signal quality and helps you find a viable outlet to use. These units also offer a security feature, which is useful, especially in a setting like mine (apartment complex). See my "Other" section as well for a short bit on the 500mbps rating.

Cons: While the units do have a more verbose set of indicators lights, there are no activity lights, just lights that indicate power, connection quality, and whether or not the ethernet port is plugged in. Personally, I like activity lights, but I cannot mark this item down for the subtle lighting it offers and the signal quality light makes up for the missing activity lights. I don't have to much to say in the way of cons otherwise save for the fact that yes, an ethernet cable would be faster than using these units, but like my case in my apartment, I cannot cut holes in the walls to run cables, so these are a good solution if you're not a fan of or have trouble with wireless or just plain don't want to run cables all over the floor.

Other Thoughts: These units, like many other units boast 500mbps bandwidth, and like other units, this is a rating of system bandwidth, and is for consideration when you have more than 2 units, the best you will get out of 2 units, at maximum is 100mpbs. These units did play well with another set I had that was also based on the Atheros chipset. My testing setup was more real world than just trying to run a benchmark. I was transferring files between 2 pc's with SSDs for hard drives and knowing a baseline for when they are plugged into each other (I get speeds reaching up to 800mbps). These units, like other units need to be plugged in at the wall, not into a plugstrip, battery backup, or any other type of power filter or conditioner to work well. They can work better or worse depending where you plug them in, as all of their signal has to go back through the breaker / fuse panel in your house then out to the other unit usually, if you are lucky it does not have to go that far depending on how your house is wired. So when you have the units in other rooms, sometimes depending on what circuit they are on in your house, you will see better or worse performance. I did open one of my units to inspect the interior, I am an electronics tech by trade and I always like to pop open my review items and inspect them, however for the home user I would not recommend this as it can be a safety hazard and void your warranty. I really enjoyed testing these units, I actually plan to put them into full on service so I can have a PC in my bedroom without having to setup a wifi network and deal with it's insecurities and interference from other networks. Thanks for reading :D
